  • IndisputableAttitude...your confusion tells me that you really arent suited to anything but scrub toilets or work in the police service.

  • This guy uses sophistry to say something very stupid: race doesn't exist. These morons flip-flop to suit their propaganda objectives: When they want to have people mix, they say race doesn't exist. When they want Negroes to get preferential treatment for job placement, race suddenly exists again. They aren't suited to work in an institute of higher learning, except to scrub the toilets.

  • The invention of race and classification of people has been the greatest tragedy to befall mankind. Its really as if for the past 600 years the world has lived through an antecedent and current nazification of experience. We see race and the world through a nazified sensibility.

  • @tenrii1 So, you don't believe in so-called Affirmative Action?

  • All Stuart Hall is saying is that science cannot produce a smoking gun which proves that there is a genetic based difference in intelligence between random members of all races. Its no good producing specious comparisions between cocker spaniels and great danes, where is the EVIDENCE? Its like comparing a black boxer with a white rower and saying that proves a genetic difference between races lol.I am black and I couldnt box for the life of me. The truth is that racists are generally stupid lol

  • Race is all in our mind...hmmm. The problem is that liberal academics try to use different tools to describe humans than the scientific tools they use to describe animals, which of course contradicts the liberal notion that humans are "just another animal." It's an intellectual (and I use thet term loosely) slight of hand that isn't very effective, like trying to say that cocker spaniels and great danes are the same thing just because they can mate and reproduce.

  • There are some interesting points raised here but even his first argument I have problems with. How could there be no link between my biology and my understaning of the world? Clearly people aren't born racist or with any specific ideologies but there are genetic differences between races which to an arguable extent may determine ones outlook on the world. Disregard for sociobiology is a lacking force in this lecture.

  • Buddhism already postulated the idea of social construction of ethnicity, race, age, sex, etc, in its realization that so-called "reality" is actually fabricated illusion and Enlightenment is available to all humans.. So nothing new here.. Unfortunately most people, even so-called Buddhists, have remain deluded and will continue to be deluded for millenia.. Clinging to delusions is a natural human tendency.

  • its interesting that you accuse ethnic studies "idiots" of trying to disprove biological determinist models, but if you were to look more into it and inform yourself you would see that that is not what ethnic studies is. True, there are many problems in society and to ignore issues or race and ethnicity only continues to perpetuate inequality. Also, Hall is not "blaming irrelevant people" he is exposing power and the legacy of inequality that those in power continue to benefit to this day.

  • Are you talking to me of course I know the movie is do the right thing. The Stuart Hall is mine from my commentary on Mumia. stuart Hall represents the mistakes of Europe in relation to the contuinent of Africa and unfoirtunately the United nations is housed in America.

The safest place for it to be.

Do the Right Thing was just that and I did.

AKA GERBNER PHILADELPHIA AND MEDIA LITERACY IT USED TO BE CALLED YELLOW JOURNAKLISM PRIOPAGANDA POSTERS!

  • I don't think you need to affix 'I would suggest' to the statement 'the media is institutionally racist'.. there are hundreds of objective studies that prove it!

Just buy a weeks worth of newspapers and tally the number of negative stories against the positive ones..

  • Where is rest of it?

  • Fuck Black, Fuck White, Fuck Hispanic, Fuck Native American, Fuck Asian...the only race that I love is the HUMAN RACE.

  • well as colorblind as you wish you were, its a bunch of crap. the thing about the situation is that meaning and value are given to race (as much as you want to deny it, its a living reality), so for you to say fuck who I am, is very insulting. Perhaps you could do some extra credit reading and inform yourself.... Richard Delgado, Derrick Bell, Jean Stefanic, just to name a few.

  • It's not as insulting as you imply it to be... I can see where motgio is getting at. People are trying to eliminate discrimination against any so-called race, so in actual fact race is in reference to species. Race shouldn't be the determining factor in anything. it's not that its "fuck who i am" it's that race is not the emphasis in determining the person. So perhaps, xicana, it is you who should really re-read what it is you're arguing.

  • We're in a race? damn i must be miles behind by now *starts running*

  • I was expelled for using stuart hall coverage Unesco and the videos of Mr. Jally. Nice use of Spike Lee's Crroklyn. Mr Lee interviewed President Hrabowski of UMBC for his movie on the church bombings in the south in the united states of america.See adahman 1907 concerning mumia abu jamal and Philadelphia. adahman1907

  • the movie is do the right thing

  • i would sugest that the media is institutionally racist in its policies and also racist in its representation of ethnic monorities blacks an, scottish, irish and is the most ethnocentric institute next to the education system. It is the shit stirring, capitalist loving distortion to the mind, it socially controls and constructs the morals and norms of whichever society it is placed in. It picks and chooses its agenda and applies itself to the subconcious.

  • my favourite theorist ever ! I love you Stuart Hall! this is just a tip of the iceberg of his work ...I am sad that the the magestic CCCS is closed by the narrow minded conservatives ! but the bullet is already shot and cultural studies is thriving everywhere thanks to this MAN and to others who worked with him in CCCS ( perry anderson, richard johnson , Angela Maccrobie et al !!!!!! Love to all of ya !keep the good work ! please if anyone has more vidoes of Stuart Hall PLEASE upload !!!!

  • It's strange how this is on a YouTube channel that encourages not trusting the media but they can't get based race.

The media encourages "diversity" and "brotherhood" between races, and you, as the anti-media people you are, go along with it.

    Logical.

  • I'd argue the media doesn't encourage diversity and brotherhood in the slightest.

The mass media may on the surface seem less racist than in the past, but this is not something the media has willingly chosen to lead the way in, its a response to the fact that we live in a multi cultural society and they have to appeal to as many as possible.

By putting a few non white faces on the TV, they just add to the hegemony that keeps those of us who aren't racist from standing up and saying anything.

  • What? You're joking... the media led to way for "anti-racism". Multi-cultural societies, societies which disobey millennial-old traditions, beliefs, those that have kept us alive... these societies do not just appear. They are instigated by those who benefit from them.

  • Media is simply plural for medium. A medium itself has no inherent purpose other than to communicate the ideology of those who own and control that medium.

The media can be used to promote many different things. But the historical record shows us that it promotes the ideology of the dominant elements of society and in a class system that generally isn't conducive to ethnic unity.

  • That's quite typical. The media leads and creates the "dominant" elements. Things like the Civil Rights movement didn't just pop out of no where because "the majority of the people" wanted it.

No, the media owners wanted it and told the people that, they too, wanted it.

  • Thank-you so much for sharing this important video.

  • stuart hall is so fucking sweet.

  • This is a very good discourse, much needed, though you need to be unapologethic and bold during this type of discussion, he did not encourage a means for institutions to conduct a politic not based on racism.

  • Thank u ChallengingMedia for this videolecture.

  • Where is the rest of this lecture?

  • you can find the whole thing at google videos under "the floating signifier"

  • Stuart I mean! haha. Thank you ChallengingMedia!
