Scenes come and go, of course Thrash metal is still alive and well today and has always maintained a large following and an audience, but scenes come and go, they start of underground, reach the surface, see the peak, clime that, then fall down (not disappear though!) thus another scene will take over. Just looking at the Nirvana posts here, their funny, cause Nirvana's last album In Utero was apparently inspired heavily on Celtic Frost. Check up Celtic Frost's book "Are you Morbid". It is weird

Thrash became saturated and the media started paying attention to grunge and ignoring thrash. New bands could hardly find record labels anymore and that is how the old thrash movement "died"
