as far as I know the 353 has no particular meaning other than to designate what engine it is. Some other engines of that era were the D318 and D315, so the idea of it relating to hp is not viable. All production low drive D9's were turbo 6's, the G and H models also had an aftercooler.
So is the "353" the power rating? Is that how it works? And were all D9's 6-cyl turbos, or was that like a top-of-the-line model? Love old diesels, anyway. Well...gas engines are alright too, but they both have their attractions. =)
isnt it standard for a D9 to start on strickly starter fluid??? lol when we would start ours, it was like go to NAPA and get a case of starter fluid. gotta love em though. good running machines
love these old cats... nothing comes close to the sound and just raw feeling of cold iron machines. we have a late 50's D7 with the D339 turbo. gives me chills every time we run it. looking to add a D9G to the stable soon.
Love the old cat motors like that they sound like there going to rfly apart when they crank up and dont forget the knocking sounds that all thoise motors made sounds like a monkey in there with a hammer
@SANTACRUZDRIVER8 It's after the turbo so it doesn't really matter too much. I'll patch it up once it's back in the yard, not worth dragging the welder out into the field to fix. A new exhaust elbow from Cat would probably cost more than the machine is worth LOL
I need that spray you use at the biginning of the video for my IMT-539. Where are they sold?

A D-8 around 1975, used for logging, very cold winter morning start, such a nice sound when that baby catches and gets ready for 8 hours of work!!

Everything from Cat starts at $100 and goes up from there!
The only exception are the trinkets and keys, gotta keep the operators happy.
