I must confess I was drawn to this game thanks to this review, but I have to say that I found the underlying shooting mechanics to not be all that fun. I agree with the concept of the buddy system etc and everything being great, but I found the actual gameplay to not be much fun, which is a shame because I really enjoyed The Void which is another game you recommended.
i just wish FC2 was way smaller in map size and didnt have the old too gamey features like enemy respawns on checkpoints, plus it came in a really crowded time.
Also buddes werent used as teammates, or i gave up and uninstalled the game way sooner than i should have.
@635574 If you fall and a buddy saves you they stay and fight along side you. If you choose to do a buddy's mission the mission will almost always be a two-parter where they become directly involved in the second part and fight along side you.
I had one of the heavest moments in a videogame, my buddy was down, i diddn't want him to die so i injected him with a syringe, it diddn't work but I diddn't give up, after three syringes I realised he was going to die anddied while I was trying to heal him
Couldn't agree more with this review. My biggest complaint about the game isn't the respawning guard posts but the glitch where crucial quest giving NPCs just wouldn't spawn. Happened to me in two separate play-throughs, so I never even got to finish it.
I remember when I was trying to revive a teammate and it got really intense because I was in the middle of a firefight and I finally got to them and I am giving him syringes and then he dies and I am like fuck he died.
While the missions were definitely linear, there was still a great deal of non-linearity. Take the bounty missions for example, were all of the bounty targets in a canyon, with no possible other way of approaching them? I think not. On most of them they were in a place where they could be approached from various angles. Plus you had the option of how you wanted to go in. Plus you had the option of whether to hogtie and bring him to jail or just kill him.
The idea of far cry 2 was just great. An open world and such, do what you want however you want, moral decicions, use fire as a weapon... Problem is it didn't turn out too well...
Crysis is famous for its graphics, but the gameplay just isnt as good. The multiplayer also had a huge potential and every technical thing was perfected down to the very details.
Really sucks that Crytek makes technical masterpieces that aren't good as games. I hope they make a real groundshaker sometime
Far Drive 2 was an overrated shooter that ended up amounting to nothing more but wasted potential. None of the key selling features Ubisoft promised ended up making the final build other than the fact it took place in Africa.

WOw, really? The game was boring as hell. Enemies took 100s of bullets while you couldn't take one. The malaria pills was a stupid gimmick. Enemies would respawn and would constantly harass you even when you were doing a mission for them.
It had no story at all, and it was a linear game set up in an open world (no different than a GTA Game.)
YES! YES! YES! I felt like such a crazy person for defending this game for these reasons. Funny thing is that on my second play through I knew that they were going to kill me so I did the stringing along and then kiiled them. Also, I think that this is one of the very few true non-linear games. The mostly terrible voice acting and the shallow choice system took me back a bit but other than that, I think this is the type of game you wanted to see from the Character Empathy video.
wow that was the most balanced video game review i have ever seen. I personally didn't like the game due to it's repetitive nature and the annoying things you mentioned but i've given it a 5/5 for a well balanced, well thought out video review.
FarCry is a landmark title, nobody would deny that, but t isn't a 2008 release ttle! He could just as well have said Doom was the most important game of 2008, and it would have made as much sense. Kinda' off topic, but in my opinion Doom is way up there with Elite, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros, Gran Turismo etc.
Whether I made a counter argument or not, it still doesn't change the fact that this is for the most part pure waffle.
Well thanks for confirming the name of the game, as I can't recall him even mentioning it in his comments. That explains a lot! lol. I briefly played FarCry 2 but thought it was a bit crap compared to the original, so I didn't recognise it from the vid, just assumed it was the original FarCry.
Yeah, Judge Dredd the movie was a bit poo, and kinda shafted the Dredd mythos and messed with the characters, the comic book is very good though, you should check it out ;-)
Fc2 was cool but they really dropped the ball on the wild life. Why not put aligators in the water and lions walking around. I want to hit a giraffe with my car :D.
But the guard post shit really sucks that is what stopped me playing this game. In the cutscene in the beginning you stop at a guard post and i thought; whoa this is cool. but in the actual game they just shoot everything that moves? makes no sense

This game sucks massive balls, why so much praise for a mediocre pos? Not to mention all the driving being so fucking boring, drive 15min to your mission, firefight for 5min drive back another 15min to the center of the map to pick up another mission, rinse and repeat. Ubisoft always finds a way to make a game fail.
good point. in addition to the whole guard points bullshit which became a burden later on.
still, this game had its moments and charm and good action and techniques, and after watching this video im gonna pick it up again and give it a serious shot.
lets try to look beyond the few things that totally suck ass, shall we ?
Holy Shit dude, u speak much truth from your mouth. FarCry 2 was a truly awesome experience and I agree withe everything u said 120%. Very well spoken.
I don't think Far Cry worked well with the linear storyline that it had. That kind of game would have benefited from an almost MMO type of thesis - just personal progression, along the lines of being a warlord and building power and land. The buddies really did add enough emotional attachment for the game itself to have no real storyline, but instead you get pushed along this crappy narrative thread.
one thing, You mentioned the randomness and the unscripted nature of the game, but one thing you didn't mention really got me.
It was when my friend got wounded, I tried to fix him up with morphine, but it didn't help, he just kept asking for more. to ease the pain, I kept giving and giving until he just died. that hit me hard. these guys are just as fragile as you, they risk their lives for you, and sometimes you're powerless to do help them.
totally agree, my buddy died and he was asking me to shoot him and I was like," no!"and did what I could to save him and I couldn't, then he died and I felt heartbroken =[
That's what Ubisoft does best; create games with amazing potential bursting to the seam with new ideas that always find a way to fail. Hopefully, other developers will see where Ubi went wrong and capitalize on their mistakes.
You have convinced me to check this game out. I ignored it when it came out because of a lackluster reception. Although maybe thats just people playing it wrong, not seeing how deep it is. From your description you make it sound important, too bad the important games arent always the best ones.
I think a lot of people complain about the missions being repetitive because they expect to be given a very specific set of tools to do the job at each point, i.e. the sniper mission, the rocket mission, the stealth-based C4 mission, and FarCry 2 for the most part doesn't do this. It gives you a huge set of tools to do each mission how you like, and that is where it succeeds for me. Some good points Rev, and an interesting view on a game I liked a lot more than I thought I would.
I'm glad I came into the game with zero expectations, because for the most part, Far Cry 2 blew me away. I agree with almost everything positive and negative in this rant (except the buddy system...maybe I'm just an unempathetic SOB). Although I could never get myself to play more than an hour at a time, it managed to do its fundamental shooting so well, I ended up using the game as a sort of 'blow off steam after work' game.
I found myself in a world where battling ad infinitum became boring through its' meaninglessness. I'd have fun for a while then want a break from the game. After a rest the battles became fun again. The fights never built towards anything or had a permanent change. It's a creepy world where you shoot people dead and they're back next time you visit, a sort of hell.
I'd do the main storyline's missions b/c something novel would be shown for each one but hated the main story too much to finish.
Man Rev it seems sacrifice is the concept you find most compelling for a story.
I was really disappointed by Far Cry 2. I saw earlier trailers where the designers said you'd be able to hunt the Jackal any way you wanted, building up your reputation through the factions, and got excited. "Finally!" I thought: a game w/a living world you interact w/to reach your goals instead of a funhouse you run through activating analog mechanics. But the game came no where near delivering.
This was one of the ONLY FPS's I couldn't bring myself to play for more than 2 hours. I found this game and the design choices they made awful. EVERY single person that inst a story giver hates you, tries to kill you on sight, and will follow you for 5 miles through the jungle shooting at you. Shitty shitty game.
I actually wish I liked this game as much as you did. I played FC 2 for about 2-4 hours and got sick of it. I thought it was actually TOO open ended and took forever to get anywhere. But the mechanics were great.
I loved Far Cry 2 since it was straight up shooting suckers in the face with your .50 caliber sniper and nothing else. The missions were dumb and the buddy system was repetitive, but I didn't care because I liked shooting stuff in that game. I'm surprised you liked this so much, since I know you hate actually playing games.
i played the pc version of FC2 and the instant save/load system totally nullifies the concept of safehouses and need for having buddies.
OPEN WORLD:
driving is a chore: drive past guardpost, get chased, shoot'em up, take their car. repeat every 2 min.
SIDE MISSIONS

I couldnt get over all the cheap deaths in FC2...example: walking around in the middle of nowhere. SUDDENLY Loud revving sounds behind me, and BAM dead in 1 hit from some random car
I was playing Far Cry 2 today and I do understand where you coming from but It's good to have great rungs for your ladder that work better that any other ladder but you need the poles. Far Cry 2 is missing that core element of enjoyment and all due respect to you, but Far Cry 2 isn't a game I can sit down and play. It almost seem to be me like a task I have to do not to enjoy
I have not played FarCry 2, but it seems its everything I wanted in a game. Replay value in first person shooters is a rarity, let alone the open ended game play.
