I hate paper tape. Im a novice and hate drywalling so I like the mesh. Seems easier for a DIYer. Mine has stayed in place for 5 years with it and opps I used regular mud.
I was about to critizice the video about him playing too much with the mud. But it is true. he is just showing us how to do it. now if you do it like that at work, you'll get fired.
Yeap..the bubbles...I cant understand why mine always bubble! Thanks for uploading this. I guess I dont have enough compound underneath the tape. and I assume I'm not pressing hard enough to embedd the tape into the compound. Back in basement to try again.
Great how to video! Very informative! Don't listen to the negative comments. The ones leaving the negative comments probably don't even know how to even turn on a video camera to make their own video.
Hey liquidgroove...you think the compound is going to set up in 5 minutes? It's not superglue moron. It's not going to cause any kind of problem in the short amount of time he spend doing it. Rushing through the process is likely to cause more problems than taking your time.
i swear id hold the camera for this guy anyday, all the other idiots have camermen .but the guy that really should have one,the one that knows what the hell hes talking about! DONT,and,! he still makes the angle on the the camera right, you the man
yes going to slow does matter. If you apply your mud to the seam and take as long as this guy, you will have problems. He slowly applied the mud then slowly put the tape down, then took it off to reposition it, then ripped a section off etc, this is not the right technique for someone to learn from. You want to seat your tape as fast as possble so it doesn't set up on you, & repositioning it can cause the tape to lift. The basic concept is easy, but don't follow this guys execution
The "seam " referred to is a recessed edge of the sheetrock. If he simply used a flat trowel to apply the "mud" it would take about 20 seconds to fully fill the recess with jointing compound. Then (if right handed) hold tape roll in left hand and run tape from right to left at same time using broad-knife to im-bed it ( 5 seconds). Then use trowel to skim over imbeded paper to smooth out. You wont get any "air bubbles" under tape. Its that simple and takes about 40 seconds total to complete.
yes it does matter how the tape is folded and what side is out if you look in the center you see the fold it should alway face the wall when the mud dries it shrinks pulling the tape in if not correct as it dries the fold will push slightly out and create a crack in your finish
yes it does matter how the tape is folded and what side is out if you look in the center you see the fold it should alway face the wall when the mud dries it shrinks pulling the tape in if not correct as it dries the fold will push slightly out and create a crack in your finish
Word to the wise. Use all purpose for taping and bedding or floating in because there is more glue in the compound. Then use light weight for skimming on the last coat because it is easier to sand or as i prefer to sponge the edges and it also does not shrink as much. No need to sand if your talented. hehe
Yeah this guy is a newbie. Wait until tomorrow and I bet he has more air than mud behind that tape. I kinda miss doing that shit.
+1 to thanking you for the info about which tape to use with a specific compound. Also, thank you for taking the time and explaining the do's and dont's. Great how-to vid.
and nice one on not doing the butt first? It's supposed to be behind the bevel.Ok here is a tip!Tape all your butts then your bevels then all your little tapes then all your angles!!Your welcome landlord.
I honestly can not believe the taping videos on here, obviously totally un-professional and has no idea what he is doing and any pro would agree with me!Same as pretty much every taping or boarding video on here i am seriously laughing my A-ss off!!!What a joke!
@joejensen36 lol Ya well i run a business and and fire people who can't do there job and i do mine very well thanks! And fast!In fact my partner and i do 85000 Sq f a week thanks.
I'm working on a small section of wall and all my seams are cut, so they are squared off and don't have that slight depression where they meet. Whats the best way to meld the seams? I would think if I did it this way I would end up with a hump at the seam.
ye ur rubbish u didnt tell da people dat the tape has a creas in da centre so u can fold it into corners if u put the wrong side on the wall it will suck back and u will have a creas in ur work plus ur using finish it dosent go off for ages fuckin 15 mins my arse a bit of water would soften it back up again and there woz a big gap in ur boards so its gonna suck rite into dat hole u ass hole dont follow any tin he say's im a tape an jointer he's a clown .
That information about easy sand (aka durabond) is completely untrue. Other comments that he made are wrong too. Listen to this guy and you could end up with all kinds of problems.
Thanks for the comments about which tape to use with certain compounds. These small details make a difference between careless dummys who don't care how long your walls last and pros. There is a lot of bad taping out there.
Sean you better go back to drywall finish 101. You got alot to learn before you start teaching people how to tape. I know you don't tape for a living and if you did I bet you woudln't make a 200 board ft in an 8 hr day.
Can someone explain to me why tape along the sheetrock seams might come undone. On the ceiling in my home, two strips of tape are coming undone after 11 years. Is this faulty tape, mud, contractor who installed it, or a combination of all three? Also, any good advice on which brand name tape or compound mud I would want to use?
water can cause seems to bubble out. as for brands i prefer CGC from home depot. you can buy it in 20, 60, 90 and what ever the other stuff is that takes a day to dry. if you dont know any thing about those numbers its the time it takes to dry. i always use 20 or 60 get more done that way. i also prefer fibre tape much faster and stronger i think but every one will have an opinion.
How wide can the seams be? I have some seems almost a half inch, and the nylon mesh tape I'm using will bulge out just a bit when I put compound over it. Do the seams need to be slimmer than that?
@joejensen36,lol, I knew a super taper, he would fly through the job and we would have to sand the crap out of it and go over the rest of it lol. I hated working with that guy...but he was the boss so what can you really say:) He was never good at finishing up, but the guy could run a bazooka and wipe tape like a madman.

I've never had any problem using mesh tape with either hot or cold mud. It avoids that big, embarrassing bulge on the horizontal and butt joints. I also like to cover each row of nails with a piece of it, the final result looks more like real plaster, and nail pops are less likely.
this is taking way too long i know hes reachin out to a beginner audience but his technique is slow and butt joints should be done first. a crew could have had a whole floor done with boxs in the time its taking this guy to put 1 coat on a 10 ft joint
From what I've heard lately, they use boxes for fast taping, though they probably still use trowels for veneer plastering. I'm sure they can do a large job much faster than a DIY'er. They also don't have to talk to a camera while working. But, if only doing a few walls, the time it takes to find a good contractor, get an estimate, and wait around while his people work, can be more than it would take to just do it. And, I've seen "professionals" using everything from plastic knives to trowels.
Boy! I am using the same old mud over & over again ... & the knots -OMG. I have been adding a little water to try to get mud smooth again, but worry I am "weakening" my mud. Of course it takes me forever to add one "stripe" of mud to anything; I agonize over every little "speed bump". I wish I would have found your vids sooner and hope I find your butt joint & an angle taping vid. Thanks again for another great informative video!
I am working on an old house (from the 60's). Wanted to do all the work my self then changed my mind but only raninto people even less knowlegeable than my self. One guy said he only uses mesh tape because paper tape gets bubles. When I asked him if he would use 4'X8' or 4'X12' for the ceiling since the rooms are exactly 12' wide, he responded "they come in 12'?". THANKS FOR THE VIDEOS. I AM LEARNING A LOT AND you are the first to clear up the difference between tape and mesh. THANKS AGAIN!
Maybe I'm mising something but why the change to horizontal sheets instead of verticals that join half and half on a stud? No butt joints that way either and I've always done verticals. Horizontals also crack along the taper joint between studs - no cracks with the vertical system unless the framing is moving. Just curious why I'm seeing the horiz system with professionals, maybe quicker to do and they dont have to live in it 5 yrs down the road and see the cracks. Good video though, informative
I think, especially with the 12' sheets that professionals use, it's less work to run them horizontally. It's also easier on you back. But I think vertical sheets usually look better. If everything is done right, cracking shouldn't be much of a problem with either. My horizontal sheet rock is 50 years old without any serious cracking.
Sheetrock 50 yrs ago was done differenty than now and usually skim coated and the board was harder than a lot I see now. I think you hit it on the head though - speed. Just like veneering brick over framing it's faster than building a block inner wall with brick outer keyed into the block. Do it fast and cheap to make it last log enough to get them profit and out of any liability. Now if they have fire blocking at 4 ft and run it horizontally it might hold up - 50 yrs ago it was code to block
It's not rock hard, but it has fewer air bubbles than some of the sheetrock I've seen recently. It wasn't originally skimmed (though some of the walls have been since), not even put up all that well; I've fixed a few empty spots and pinched corners.
I think stability of the structure makes the biggest difference; my outer walls are solid masonry and don't move much; the one place that did crack was a ceiling that was nailed directly to 21' 2x12s; too much flexing. My sister's house was built with rock-lathe plaster; great stuff unless you live near train tracks. Every house on her street needed a new, sheetrock ceiling.
I didn't know about the paper tape vs. the adhesive tape difference and the different muds associated with them as well as the chemical process on the adhesive tape, very useful info! Where's the corner video, I don't know if it's necessary to wet the tape before applying it in the corner (i'd rather not)
Really Liked your video. good Job instructing rookies like me. Thanks, john
