  • sorry im not good with cameras just in the process of finding a better camera for are show, how do you capture the video onto your laptop and how exspensive is a hard drive last time you looked

  • On this camera can you upload the videos straigh to your laptop or, do you hafe to use a tape?

  • @TheFeverOutdoors It uses a tape. But you can buy a hard drive for it. The hard drives are expensive and buggy from what I have read.

  • @TheFeverOutdoors Oh, and yes, you can hook it up to your laptop but you have to capture the video onto your laptop

  • 3:00 first thing you should do is give it to me i have a gl1 ;(((

  • I ahve the XL1s but looking to upgrade so I know the Camera well, but I want to understand more about the HD faciltiies...and what is required to record DTE.

  • Are so the extra DTE on the back will give me HD record facility?

  • lol I took a Canon 550D out in public and people thought I was a photographer, then I took a camcorder out in public and people though I was just some nobody making a crappy movie! Then I took this out and loads of people thought I was from the news!!!

  • Why the high end HD camera, while all your videos are in 360p?

  • @jamesjr934 Because YouTube is not my only venue. Not to mention, I'm on the road so I have limited bandwidth.

  • @TruckerWarren

I just want to apologize if I sounded like I was belittling you, I really wasn't, it was a honest question. Is there anyway you can post some samples of your work in HD, I'm just curious. I really enjoy your channel, btw.

  • i like to buy a canon xl h1a i like to bring and i tried to find a cheap camcorder to buy xl h1a to bring home

  • If you buy a Canon, you will eventually have to face the factory service center and they will NOT honor their warranty. My HD so-called Professional Camera has been in the shop THREE times in its short 6 month life. They tried to charge me $1,000 because of a defective firewire port. Complete idiots. Defective equipment and a 4 year warranty. I will NEVER buy any Canon product again. Period. Considering it, are you? Save your money ... don't do it. Canon sucks.

  • You look like Steve Buscemi

  • @SuperSedans LOL, I get that all the time. One lady at a Chinese restaurant that I frequented, called me "Armageddon Armageddon"( with a Chinese accent). I guess that's better then "CON AIR, CON AIR" LOL.

  • @TruckerWarren Man you are hell of a guy;)

  • @SuperSedans That was the first thing I thought...

  • @SuperSedans That was the first thing I thought when I saw this guy talking

  • I'm looking to buy this model. Many thanks for the info.

  • cool video thanks for the info on it. by the way. can you still that cinematic look on 24fps like on the xl2?

  • Does the camcorder come with a 6-pin firewire cable or do you get it separately?

  • @cubeproduktion I think I had to buy one.

  • @TruckerWarren Thanks for replying

  • It all depends on the equiptment you want to use to complete the job. A mechanic has many Different tools in his box to get the job done.

It all depends on your level of creativity.

  • dude, if the camera is HD does that mean i need a HD PC or Laptop in order for it to work ?

  • @the1mightygod No, not really. You just won't be able to see the quality for what it is. You will still be able to view and edit. But you will need an HD TV or monitor that is capable 1080p. You can also render your video in a format that will be accommodating to your viewing source, such as 720p or 480 and so forth. And finally, the camera can record in other formats as well. I have a Flip Video cam that records in HD and I rarely upload to Youtube in more then 480.

  • I've shot video with many DSLRs; common denominator with all of them is really poor sound. Shot a wedding with XL H1a (borrowed) and it was beautiful, and a real pleasure to edit. Let one of these big dogs off the chain in low light and then you really see why a dedicated machine is the way to go. My next wedding was with a combo of borrowed DSLRs and low end consumer camcorders and the results were spectacularly poor. I am not a pro, just an uncle that has some technical skills.

  • why? cuz that trucking!!..hahaha funny

  • Camcorders are dead? Really? lol Like any piece of equipment in the field each has a purpose as well as pros and cons. DSLRs shine in some situations where camcorders don't and the opposite also applies. Ahhh I wish though a DSLR could take the place a full size camera but it can't, having both would be ideal since DSLRs are quite valuable when used properly.

  • Looks like Sony copied the Canon XL for their EX3.

  • Thanks Warren and others on the advice, I have found a great site to Buy the XL H1a for $5049 with an enormous amount of accessories, which I will post after I buy it. This will be good for making videos for Music.

  • that's 5643.90 €

  • Hello I'm a pro director in Switzerland and I can only confirm your feelings about the XL H1A. I worked with the XL1 from 1999 to 2009 and I switched to the H1A last year. This baby has outstanding capacities, even in low light. As I make lots of aviation films (most with helicopters), the H1A is the perfect compromise between weight and quality. It's very easy to jump out of a helicopter with this camera. And holding it on the shoulder is pure happiness compared to many other models.

  • I found a xlh1s to buy used for $5000, and a new xlh1a is $5500, which one you recommend me to buy?

  • @cmlsatiro Hello it depends on what you want to do ! The XL H1A is the ENG version, while the H1S has more connections (HD-SDI and genlock), but thsese connections are only useful if you want to use the camcorder in multi-camera mode (if you want to connect it to a video mixer for a live programme for example). The H1S is more expensive than the H1A, now it's up to you to decide wether you want a second hand H1S or a brand new H1A !

  • Damn, it's such a pity that more and more pro videographers switch to DSLR's now. I was talking to Chick Corea's videographer, and he confirmed that the camcorder business is dead. I have to change my hobby, because the only reason that I got interested in video, is because of the beautiful video equipment. Enjoy it while it lasts...

  • @dvamateur HAHA, that's so true, I think these cameras are works of art. Some times, I don't even shoot anything, I just sit there and look at my Camera. I don't carry it with me anymore as space is limited in a Semi-Truck.

  • @dvamateur ok DSLRs are NOTHING like these types of camcorders. YES DLSRs give a beatiful picture, but they can not perform the functions of a pro consumer camcorder.

  • Comment removed

  • @dvamateur So it's true then, more people are switching to DSLR's for video. That sucks, since the video capabilities doesn't compare to camcorders like these. In my opinion, the pro camcorders 5 years ago have better quality than the 5d, yet people would rather use a DSLR.

I may be an inspired photographer, but arent DSLR's made for taking PICTURES? For the 5d, the video is great, but seriously...

  • @beranal1 People use the 5D for the sensor because RED make camcorders with a full frame sensor but the RED camcorders are super size and super expensive, I also don't get it why people use DSLRs for video than stills. I wonder if in the future, camcorders will turn into cameras and cameras will turn into camcorders.

  • @cubeproduktion Yeah, this was when I was super irate about the new change, but I discovered about the reason why people use DSLR's. Now I just roll with progress, I guess people buy it because I believe they get more bang for their buck.

  • It's so light and compact and portable!

    *sarcasm*

  • hi guys can you change the lenses on the xhg1.thanks

  • Guys, enjoy it while it lasts before canon discontinues these marvels in favor of the cheesy EOS-5D

  • Steve Buscemi is your brother in real life...come on man, admit it!!!

Also, Donald Fagen is going to get Morph the Cat after you...tsk tsk!

(Just kidding, F you tube and their policies)

    Good vids.

    How about some Lizard vision?

  • But... ah... the winde angle lens is $2,500. I hear you.

  • How much is this camera going for? like 8 or 9 grand??

  • this cam would be great if it had a lcd not an over sized view finder

  • I actually think you can open the view finder and there's an lcd there ;)

  • small as hell !

  • yeah, you're right. That kinda sucks :P

  • still a good cam but i think i might pass on this one

  • wow you will have to take out your passenger seat to use it as a pov camera

  • this camera is my priority in the near future :)

  • have you ever wanted to make a horror movie

  • what did it cost ?? :)

  • like your'ed rewiev :D :)

  • Hey, I'm with you, I'm at present struggling over the decision to buy the XL H1 or the AH a1. Many people say the only difference is the "pack" that allows you to sync with other cameras. This is a leaning me more toward the H1 because somewhere down the line I intend to get serious and would like shooting multi-cam stuff. Anyway liked the review a lot.

  • @NelsonStJames Can you explain it better because i can't chose between xl or xh camera... and what about the hv30?

  • Beautiful camera, I own an XL2...you look like a fatter Steve Buscemi lol...

  • i can get this for 550 iam soo stoked to get it!

  • shoot some vids with that... make a film..i wanna see how the quality looks like..if its pretty good or not..cause i was thinkin of buying one of those.

  • nice cam!

  • I wanna see some HD footage from the camera, you can voice over it.

  • you got one heck of a nice cam man. I have the Canon XH-A1 and I would trade it in for a XL-H1 any day lol

  • Nice review, can we attach flash XDR on to the enhancement that was supplied withe camcorder(the one you mentioned)

  • That is bad-ass dude. If I had a five G's to drop on a camcorder I would. I'm looking to get a full HD camcorder, preferably one with manual/auto focus.

  • May i recommend the HV30 - HV40 from canon for a cheeper full HD alternative, Im using the HV20, from further down the line. But they are awesome cameras.

  • Yeah, I agree, This camera is a little too much for the average guy, and so big. I have a "Flip" video camera I'm using now and it gets way more use! Not as great but still useable footage. I guess it depends on what you are doing. If I had it to do again, I would probably buy the Canon XHA1 (half the price).

    Great suggestion George

  • How good is the Cannon XHA1? I'm in love with the XL H1a as i use it all the time in college :) but i was thinking of buying my own camera though, but of good quality (no hand held etc) so after using the XL h1a how much of a difference is the Xha1 ?

  • Well, I don't have any experience with the XHA1, but they are real similar as far as I can tell. There is a guy on here that does a tutorial on using the XHA1.

Also, there is a guy called:

aspiringphotographer, ( he is the 3rd comment in this comment section) he has an XHA1. maybe he can give you more info.

the lense is the exact same lense (except you can't remove it) But for half the price, who cares.

    Hope this helps.

  • Yeah thank you, I have my eye on the Vixia HF20 or 200. I still like looking at the expensive ones. Have you seen the Red One? Pure eye candy in my opinion.

  • I have seen the Red One, Yeah, its awesome. Only concern with that sort of camera is the epic amount of time it would take to film anything with it. Editing would be so hard, as would downloading. Youd need TB's or external or internal storage. Part of me, for these reasons craves the simpler littler camera. Even with my Canon HV20 everything seems to take ages and its sort of put me of filming. I only get my camera out once every two weeks or so now, I used to do it every day.

  • doesn't this camera have manual focus?

  • It has both manual and auto focus. And if you use the EF Adapter XL that will allow you to use the full range of EF (still) lenses. Most of those you will find you prefer to use manual focus over auto -- and in some cases you'll have to use manual.

  • I have an xl1 and hv30 with rode videomic. You wouldn't happen to know if the xl1 standard 16x lens fits on the xl h1/a body. I am still surprised that the design hasn't changed in 8 years. It is a little uncomfortable for shooting for long periods.

  • I'm pretty sure the XL1's standard lens will fit the mount, though its optic may give you a warning that the lens is not HD compatible. (You'll get that same warning, of course, with most EF lenses if you choose to get the EF Adapter XL). At least the bodies (and I assume the lens mounts) are identical. I agree it's a hard camera to shoot with handheld, but that's probably true of all decent HD cameras... extraneous movement gets hard to look at in HD.

  • wow you will wonder what happened when you see my videos- i just use my normal camaras video option!

    your videos are great quality!

  • I have a quick question.

Whats the difference from H1A To H1S?

  • The H1s has a Professional Jack Pack with Gen Loc, which is for syncing multi cams. There is no difference in the operation of the cameras. The H1s is meant more for a studio inviroment, or weddings, that sort of thing. If you are just going to do ENG or gun and run stuff, then get the H1a... Hope this helps.

  • hmmm...makes my easyshare 99 dollar digital camera look like a toy...wait..it is a toy lol..

  • If you could give some details as to what you plan on doing exactly I could offer better advice. The biggest difference between the a1 and the h1a is the jack pack (mainly for broadcasting). I would recommend getting a good 35mm dof adapter (RNG35, Letus, M2 redrock) A good set of rails and a follow focus. I would also loose the mic as it is garbage and watch the holding bracket it breaks quite easy. The list could go on and on pending what you plan to produce.

  • It is a great camera, you made a great choice. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. you got the 15% the other 85% is creative story telling. I wait patiently to see what you come up with!

  • I think you are thinking of the first generation Xl H1 (8900 dollar cam) Now they have an XL H1a (the one I have) and an XL H1s (the one with the Jack Pack.) I didn't see the need for the Jack Pack so I went with this one.

  • Thank you for the advice, the holding bracket does seem to be a little on the flimsy side.

  • OMG! that is an awesome camera!!!

  • I am in the process of buying that camera as well.. I can not wait to finally get that thing been wanting it for 2 years now...ugh.....

Tips.... Don't break it!! and if you don't want it we are offering charity!

  • LOL, thank you for the comment. I don't think I'll be letting go of this one for a long while...

  • Dude, that is one hard-out camera!

  • Whoa!!!! Now that's A CAMERA!! What'd you do, get a job as photo journalist or something?? hehe!! Super cool, bro!

  • dude...overkill.... you need a permit to work that camera... that is way cool. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with as this moves along. God bless you brother.
