that is so wrong. one word JUSTICE, justice needs to be served. justice has no color, no rich or poor. this is not right, that was the natives land first & now its ruined cuz of these wrong oil companies taking advantage of lesser people.
so what do you suggest for a "healthy" society? you guys bag on capitalism and the pursuit of the mighty dollar, but offer nothing to replace it with. is communism or socialism like venezuela's hugo chavez what you think is fair, just, and the way society should live? i am so glad i live in a country like america. go obama, yes we can!!!
Socialism in every way sucks big time. watching hugo chavez rape its citizens of property is disgusting. police, military, fire, and medicine should all be available to all US citizens regardless of their income. these are non-profit and should remain that way because these are basic fundamental rights to every us citizen. many industrial countries help 3rd world countries by investing in their natural resources that they would never have the technology to retrieve. it's a symbiotic relationship
"police, military, fire, and medicine should all be available to all US citizens regardless of their income. these are non-profit and should remain that way because these are basic fundamental rights to every us citizen." = socialism ... Silly! I'm hoping for socialized medicine in the US~long over-due.
call it what you like, but i call it universal healthcare for all. medicine should never exclude anyone!! don't miss the big picture when it comes to health and safety for all US citizens. making money and excluding basic health services is very very wrong in a democratic society that all our industrialized neighbors have done right except for the US. i'm glad you agree and not an obama racist, but don't call it socialism like the fox-palin-radical conservatives like to say in order to derail
What ever gave you the idea that I'm an Obama racist? Omg! LOL, really. However, I'm not going to go against the definition, just because republican wing-nuts make the word 'socialism' sound bad. If the US would simply accept/realize that we already have social services in place, and they are highly beneficial to all, then they'd be more accepting of it. All a matter of semantics really.
You're right about our industrialized neighbors, however. Check out Sweden~ <3
i can't believe people in the US get their news from beck, o'reilly, and fox. these ignorant racist right wing nut jobs is what is wrong with america. these rednecks only care about derailing obama at the cost of our nation.
It's gonna be my new home if the US government can't get it's act together... Mass cheap public transportation, extremely environmental, pledges to be independent from oil by 2015, social services that care for their citizens~
Corporate owned media is not the only thing wrong with this country though. I'd say the greatest problems begin with lack of education, and end somewhere twisted with a false sense of pride. Take Care Lance...
*Seems like* a combination of a puppet government and corrupt corporations. Sounds like Nigeria needs a coup... and to nationalize it's oil so Western corporations can't get their paws on it.
Yeah, because the foreign corporations are doing such a swell job. Perhaps you missed the first part of my comment about the government. Like it or not, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez is doing a better job w/ her oil than some foreign company that siphons off profits overseas. You're right. criminal corporations are favorable to all possible governments every time... in all circumstances. What a paradigm.
It's not about socialism. It's about nationalizing Nigeria's oil. You're thinking in a very absolute American paradigm - socialist/capitalist, with us/against us, liberal/conservative.
America's roads are nationalized. America's military is nationalized. Yet America isn't a socialist country. There are no absolute socialist or capitalist countries. This is about individual instances that might work better for specific countries. No all or none. No black/white.
America is a socialist country. We have collectivized roads as you point out but also Medicaid, Medicare, social security, minimum wages, etc plus regulated almost everything. Within the states; socialized education, rent controls, etc. plus another layer of licensing and regulation.
It is not black and white as you point out, it is a sliding scale. What I am pointing out is that the socialized parts of the economy always under perform.
Norway & Holland are far more socialized than USA. Yet there is more failure in USA. It's not socialism that = failure. It's corruption.
The socialist democracy of Norway works better than USA's capitalism. Yet, the capitalism of Japan works better than the socialism of Brazil. -All democracies.
Corruption is corruption, private or nationalized. However, efficient govts like Norway's are surely preferable to the situation that foreign privatization is exacting on much of Africa.
Efficiency is better that corruption and wasting resources.... agreed.
The USA is not a capitalist country. It is a dogs breakfast of socialism, crony capitalism, big government planning, regulation, command and control system with some free market flavoring yet to be progressed out.
Is a nationalized/ socialized/ crony corporatised/ government planned/ politicized system more or less likely to be more efficient than a system based on private property rights and equality before the law?
stratvic, No place is completely capitalist. Switzerland is more socialized than USA & works better. There are other factors - corruption, debt, crime, natl resources... lobbying by private companies. Corrupt govts = failure. Corrupt pvt companies = failure & dictatorship by foreign, phantom, unelectable boards of directors. Norway is more successful that *more* capitalist USA. Nigeria is suffering because of private individuals exploiting her. Exploitation comes in all denominations.
US is 1 of most capitalist countries. As pure capitalism doesn't work anywhere, I go by what does. The wealthiest countries (gdp per capita) are far more socialist than the US. They still have lots of private industry. So it should be case-by-case & not absolute. A country under siege by wealthy foreigners needs to protect its natural resources the same way Iran protects hers. If Venezuela were subject to Shell, the govt would have to do what the West wanted just to eat (see above video).
The extent societies are economically free (of socialism) correlates to the extent they are wealthy, healthy, and secure.
See iviewthetube's reference below.
More interesting is the direction of economic freedom and the results. Note India and Chinas turn toward economic freedom and the US and the UKs trend towards socialism.
Norway, Switzerland are wealthier, healthier & safer than USA and have a greater amount of socialism. Most economies are mixed. This isn't about absolutes or 'sides,' it's about a specific issue.
All other factors being equal, Iran's socialized oil allows her to retain her profits. Nigeria's privatized oil profits are sucked out of the country leaving them to wait in long lines for something their country produces. When it comes to oil, Nigeria could benefit from Iran's model
Hong Kong retains the highest rating for economic freedom, 8.97 out of 10. The other top 10 nations are: Singapore (8.66), New Zealand (8.30), Switzerland (8.19), Chile (8.14), the United States (8.06), Ireland (7.98), Canada (7.91), Australia (7.89), and the United Kingdom (7.89)

Oh, there are alternatives. It's the manner in which it's all pursued, however. And yes, Go Obama! Certainly an improvement to the last 8 years...
Still, the US is not as great as it thinks it is. There are serious issues within this country that capitalism will not resolve.
How does capitalism bring freedom to these people? To me, it looks like their land is exploited for all its worth, while the everyday people suffer.
& yea, socialism sucks? Like the fire dept. and police?

Newsflash: This week.... Chavez has devalued the Bolivar 50% and announced rolling blackouts even though Venezuela in a energy rich nation.
Socialism is the road to serfdom. Chavez is navigating that well trodden collectivist road that has always ended in human tragedy.

Again... capitalism is a scale, as for socialism. But to call the USA capitalist is to butcher the term.... unless you mean crony corporatism.
Corrupt govt = societal failure.
Corrupt private business = bankruptcy and sale.
Violent government = societal failure.
Violent private actor = criminal.
Criminal government = societal failure
Criminal private actor = jail.
People with power are susceptible to corruption. Government / socialism is putting all your eggs in one basket.
