I consider myself to be a conservative and live in Australia, we have a national health care system where everyone is taxed 1.5% of their salary. Most who are on higher salaries also have private health cover but still pay the additional 1.5% tax levy. It seems to work OK but in the past 15 years or so there has been a greater push by government encouraging people to take up private health care due to the strain on the system and the rising cost of public health care due to aging pop'n etc.

Although universal healthcare is a socialist concept, it is not practiced only by socialist societies. Britain is not socialist, neither is France, Germany, Denmark, etc. Nazi Germany spent lots of money on cancer research, so does that mean any other country that does the same is Nazi? Obviously not. If something is a good concept then the intelligent thing to do is adopt it, Everyone pays taxes for a universal education system. What's the difference?
