The way I see it is, once they appealed for LBW, play was deemed to have stopped, however I was up to the umpire to make the final decision as to giving Waugh out. I also believe a batsman can get in the way of the ball to stop it hitting the stumps, albeit that would be deemed LBW anyway. I digress, India appealed for LBW, probably a 50/50 call, the ball bounced, Waugh got in the way of the ball, he was given out, then he left. Things like this happen, just get on with it, no more arguing :D

If you look at players out 'handled the ball' in international games, they're all really intense types like Waugh, Gooch, Vaughan, Haynes. They probably concentrate so hard on defending their wicket that they forget there are actually rules about how you can't do it.

Steve knew he was out as soon as he did it. He didn't even hesitate when given. Unfortunately it was just one of those types of reflex actions we all do occasionally do without even thinking. I'm sure he was regretting having such good reflexes :) As Jazzaaaaa1 says, it cost them the series. At least it started the rot that cost them. What an amazing series.

If you look at players out 'handled the ball' in international games, they're all really intense types like Waugh, Gooch, Vaughan, Haynes. They probably concentrate so hard on defending their wicket that they forget there are actually rules about how you can't do it.

@Hashuism agree mate, I was only 6 at this time, but I would watch a Test or an ODI over T20 any-day, I have no problem with T20, I will still watch it, it's just that it is too short for my liking and I need a more engaging game to be satisfied.

Steve knew he was out as soon as he did it. He didn't even hesitate when given. Unfortunately it was just one of those types of reflex actions we all do occasionally do without even thinking. I'm sure he was regretting having such good reflexes :) As Jazzaaaaa1 says, it cost them the series. At least it started the rot that cost them. What an amazing series.

I remember watching this live on tv. I almost found the low key 2nd appeal as haunting lol. I remember thinking this could be a turning point and I was proven right, Ponting went 1 or 2 balls later stumped, Gilly made 1 I think and Warne made a duck off 20 odd balls. The batting collapse cost Australia the series.

The ball wasn't dead as the appeal was overturned. If it would hit the stumps he would be out bowled isn't it? So Waugh shouldn't have held it and was given out accordingly.
