@chufuss Yes, Canada is a monarchy (Canada can be fully described as being a: constitutional monarchy, parliamentary democracy and a federation). Didn't you know that? You should if your American, it's one of USA's closet allies and a neighbor!
Just search for "monarchy of Canada" on a search engine and have a read! ;)
@Knowzilla13 : I thought Canada was a parliamentary democracy. Truth is I don't know much about your political system but will look into it. I thought all ties with the British royals were cut years ago. Anyway, love you guys up there. A people could not ask for better neighbors.
Actually you are right, Canada is a Parliamentary democracy, we're just also a federation (just like the US; we have "provinces" instead of "states") and a constitutional monarchy (different to the US, but it doesn't effect the fact that we are a democracy).
And Canada has cut all ties with Britain (and therefore the British royals) following the Statute of Westminster in 1931 and the Constitution of 1982 which made Canada fully free...
...and under Canadian law, Queen Elizabeth II serves as Canada's Queen and head of state completely separate from being Britain's Queen and head of state.
Canada's monarchy is the complete opposite of the monarchies long ago. One of the main jobs of Canada's monarchy is to protect our nation's democracy. It can be quite a good government form. According to Freedom House's Democracy Index, 7 out of the top 10 democracies in the world are Constitutional monarchies.
In fact I made this video to counter some people's thoughts that Canada has a foreign head of state, when it does not. And of course to inspire Canadian patriotism.
If you have any questions whatsoever about Canadian politics or government. Please feel free to email me: knowzilla(at)gmail(dot)com
I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about Canadian politics, or any other politics in general (I love the topic!).
The best bit of Canada being a Monarchy is the total political independence of the head of state, and that another country pays for them! Who could ask for a better system? Canada is indeed the lucky country, and its thanks to the British Monarchy that you ended up that way.
As an ex British serviceman, I now live in Canada, and upon my arm I have the Maple Leaf tattoo along with the British Bulldog with Union Jack, with the words etched forever "British by Birth....Canadian by Choice"..........I am now Canadian and proud of it.
Good video, I have been to some of the former British Colonies like Gibraltar, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, I find it comforting to see the Royal Coat of Arms being displayed everywhere, its the ties that binds us all, the bonds of the English Language, Common history, Parliamentary Democracy, freedom all this makes us a stable and strong.
*French Quebecers can regard her as their Queen due tothe fact of our Historical links via the Jacobite line and we helped french refugees in 1789
Thats a nice video...i like how every time shes in canada she throws it in our faces why we should be proud to be canadian.we need more of that. I dont feel canadian very much living on the rock! God save the Queen!
I knew that HM Queen Elizabeth II was the Head of State of Canada but I didn't realized that Canada is a Kingdom until now that's amazing. Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen of many others nations too.
Indeed it is, lets take a look at some important dates for Canada:
1867 - Conferderation - several Provinces united into the new semi-independent nation called Canada, a Dominon of the British Empire.
1931 - The Statute of Wesminster decrees that the Dominons are all equal with Britain and that Britain can no longer make laws for them without their permission.
Finally in 1982 Canada reforms it's Constitution, and "brings it home", and cuts all links to Britain. Including to the British Crown. A Canadian Crown replaces it.
Today Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State and Queen of Canada. Canada is the largest Kingdom in the world by land area.
Contitutional monarchy along with parliamentary democracy is indeed the best government a nation can have, this has been proved by Canada's and Australia's examples. ;)
Long live Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Australia, the UK, and Her Other Realms and Territories!
(Charles can't abdicate yet though, he hasn't become King yet, who knows, Queen Elizabeth could outlive him and the Thrones might pass straight to William. Charles isn't too bad though. Long live the Queen!)
God Bless Her Majesty and her Heirs! Long Live the Queen!
