  • The main SSB crystal filter is twice as wide as it should be and also the receiver uses a single (lightly biased) NPN transistor for the first mixer.

These radios were hopelessly overrated and their only 'real' strong points were the build quality and the quality of the audio components.

However, it really is just derived from an AM CB radio design with SSB and CW/FM added as cheaply as possible. (hence the daftly wide SSB filter that is really an AM filter)

  • its just a channel kit.

  • @VA3JOR

I used to owned the Snake Cobra 148 GTL-DX I had two Snakes between late 1980 and 83.

Nice to see the Snake again.

    "Call me Snake" lol

  • sell me the box

  • nothing but, nothing like the sound of CB airwaves...

    better than sex.

    much better.

  • I have to say, it's a pretty close feeling.

  • hi whats the mod for that channel selector for the extra channels i like that

  • This radio has an additional board in it. I bought it like that.

  • Did Snake Fix this rig for you...

  • check out our black cobras made by john nugent of plaistow england very rare beasts..

  • Yes i changed my business name to a more professional name there cobraman148 sounded like a cb handle. like i said before if anyone wants to ask one of my customers how happy they are with the radios i have built they can ask.

  • Very impressive,so what band coverage does it now do?

Solid built radio, just like the export version we have over here in the UK. I have a boxed version of the Cobra 148GTL DX,and still going strong after nearly 30 years.

  • That Cobra 148 GTL is unreal! My word you got yourself a good one for the collection. I owned two old versions and one new version. I simply like the 148! Take care, Bulldog over here in Maine, 73's.

  • Nice channel display modification showing Alpha channels & minus numbers!

I still have a mint condition 148 GTL-DX (Mk 2) which I love to fire up when the skip is running.

    73

  • Wow! I still have an old 1979 Cobra 148 GTL that works great. And it is still stock.

  • sweeet!..I have a cobra 148F in the box..brand new from 1991..cant bring myself to even turn it on...

  • how do you hook a cb indoors instead of your car?

  • You'll have to acquire a 12 Volt Power Supply with at least 5 Amps or more. Most power supplies are regulated at 13.8 V, you may buy one at your local Radio Shack or even some Surplus Stores. You also need a CB base antenna and an easy one that works good and it's easy to setup is a Antron 99 or an Imax 2000. Hope this helps...

  • For the more basic mod I use the front panel switches instead of drilling holes in the radio that de-values it. Also installing a small frequency counter on the top of the radio with velcro looks nice and works real well for SSB.

  • @VA3JOR the Snake used to go in in blocks of 40 three x3 40 120.

My last Snake had three highs one mid and two lows and it put a hell of strain on the Snake on the triple high.

  • cool 148 .whaere do i get this mode for a stock radio?

  • You can find the person who made the modification, all you have to do is go on Ebay and search for Cobra 148 GTL and find seller called cobraman148.

He always have radios on the go. On YouTube he goes by offroadaznet

  • @VA3JOR Nice rig collection of Snakes hissss lol

  • Hi VA, lovely old Cobra, i have a 148GTL myself, i think they're a nicer looking radio than the DX, mine is as new in the box, will never part with the old girl.

PS, would you sell the Realistic TRC-449??

    Team Fabulous....

  • A great classic! They don't build 'em like that any more.

  • Hey george i see you have the radio on youtube i wonder where you got that from. oh yea me haha i hope you are happy.

  • I'm extremely happy with it, works and looks great, it's a keeper for sure. Thanks bud!
