Perhaps the elements were there old countries but it took guys like W.C. Handy, Robert Johnson, Paul Whitefield, Scott Joplin, et. al. to put it all together in ways that were never done before to make musical genres that are Uniquely AMERICAN in origin --and THIS is the undisputed historical FACT. And for one to say --"...(& I don't think native "red Indian" Americans had much of an influence on music). "-- obviously shows they never heard Charlie Paker performing "Chekokee".
@SlashManEXE They never really had major differences (indeed, they jammed on stage in Paris in 1973). Forget the "burning the piano" myth - it never happened.
@ChasNDaveVideos Yeah, there were too many inconsistancies with that story. Though Jerry said that they did clash when they first met, only to become friends immediately after.
when jerry lee lewis and chuck berry are going to heaven i hope that the good lord have enough space because the heavenwill be shaking they gonna rock there yeah
Fun to watch! I see Ray Charles at the very beginning. Paul Shaffer, Will Lee on bass and David Sanborn? on sax, all from Letterman's band. Is that Neil Young rather than SRV?
It can't be denied that the US has contributed in a huge way to music albeit the roots undoubtedly lie elsewhere. In fact it's the most positive contribution the US has made.We could do with a few more things like that rather than some of the more doubtful aspects. Buffy St Marie is Native American and her music reflects it; some of it's like Rock with a wild ethnic sound; she writes smooth stuff too like Until It's Time For You To Go which Elvis did. But this illustrates the idea of influences.
were can i find this dvd? is it a bootleg or is it a public release? whats its title and were can i find this cuz i love this mucho!!!!!!!!! Keef and Chuck are my heroes and its kool to see SRV up there too with those guys!!! thanks for sharing this sir!!
@dkstryker You can find the full 38 minute performances on bootleg DVD (in black & white only) via myself (I'm Peterdchecksfield, this is my other account), message me privately with your trade lists. However the top quality colour excerpt is only available via an expensive multi DVD various artists boxset (just google Rock & Roll Hall of Fame DVD & you'll find it!).
@1pick2sticks My point is that the roots of most "American" music can be traced back to other countries. For example the bluegrass & country songs that The Everly Brothers grew up with are often of Scottish & Irish origin; the cajun & zydeco of Louisiana can be traced back to France; & the primal rhythms of Bo Diddley & John Lee Hooker aren't that far removed from those in Africa. As for us in England, we added our own home-grown influences such as "music hall" to Americans rock (& roll) etc..
@peterdchecksfield ...which is why Lonnie Donegan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones & all the other 50s & 60s (UK) greats came up with something a little different to what the Americans did, & then influenced worldwide of course. So to say that non-classical music only started in America is over-symplifying things (& I don't think native "red Indian" Americans had much of an influence on music).
It just proves that the U.S.A. is the Melting pot of the Earth. Wasn't putting down Skiffel. We all know if there was no Beethoven, or Mozart, there would be no Rock. I was just stating that everything BIG came from here. A very unique century. Things have slowed down, and aren't exiting anymore. It seem we've been re-hashing the same stuff for years now. I think rap is starting to fall into the same situation as it has been around for 25+ years now.
@timothyh71 America is a whole continent sir.. you always people from the US think you are the center of the whole universe.... and just so you know, blues is founded in african music.. or where do you think all the black people came from... cheers
Quick music history lesson. The origins of the blues date back to post slavery in the deep south. It comes from a mixture of African American gospel spirituals, and country music. Sure you can trace some of the methods like call and response from Africa and some of the style from Europe but its as AMERICAN as it gets. America is the center when it comes to Rock, Jazz, Blues. Hip Hop, Country, and Pop. If you're from Europe we thank you for classical, punk& the Beatles.
I am a HUGE Jerry Lee Lewis fan, but I must say he was very overpowering here. No one could take him down! I wish he would've at least given Chuck Berry a better chance, let alone Ray Charles, hardly even even seen in the back there. Stevie Ray Vaughan too. I think Mick Jagger was there. I never heard that other piano. As far as guitar, the only one who was able to come through in the mix was Keith Richards.
From beginning to the end they coudn´t find a common groove. Awful.

Everything else is from travellers.
