@MrInstrumentalist What Mance told me is that he learned the song before WW I, that he probably heard it first around 1911. He did not meet or see Blind Lemon until around 1920. I conclude that the song probably was in oral tradition and that both Mance and Blind Lemon absorbed it independently. I believe that Blind Lemon recorded One Thin Dime in 1927. Had Mance recorded first, we would call it Out and Down, and credit him for the song, which probably predated both men.
Well you actually spoke to the man and I'm just going off what I read and what my ears tell me as far as the construction of the song. It really doesn't matter much because Mance and Jefferson as well as Blind Willie Johnson are three of my favorite musicians. They make me proud to be a Texas Musician
@bozez1 Mance is pictured playing his Harmony Sovereign, which he played in the 1960s during the "folk revival;" he is also shown playing my Martin in his bedroom. My guitar looks pretty new, as it was purchased in about 1962 and the picture was taken in 1966. He is also shown in the 1970s with the Gibson at McCabe's guitar shop, where we played for the last time. That guitar was stolen for drug money; Mance visited Tary in jail & brought him a guitar. Google "Tary's Tale, Austin American".
@pdxviastl theres asshole haters for everything. probably some 12 year old who's heard nothing but justin bieber and mtv crap his whole life. sad really!
