@rgur90x Contrary to popular belief, Ariel's tail isn't green but a special blue-green colour created by the Disney studio animators specifically for her called 'Ariel Blue.'
@cupcakefairy87 I do know that, but in most of the scenes in this making of, the tail looks downright blue instead of blue-green. It wasn't like that in any home video release so far.
at 7:07 i wish i could have one of those moments that glen keane had with his wife, i used to be really really obese but when i was 16 i lost a large amount a of weight and tried to hold on to the hope that a girl could love me, but their were times i showed a lot of anger so i guess their scare of my temper, right now all i want out of my teen years is to find a girl who could see beyond that and see the good in me

Kiss The Girl is so freaking sweet. It's like when you like someone and you have a million voices in your head saying 'go for it!' and stuff, but you're just too chicken haha
@sonicOneTwo ...Ignorance at it's best . She did not sell her soul . She gave up her voice in exchange to be a human but she had to find true in 3 days in order to stay human forever or else she would belong to Ursula the sea witch. Ursula had no intention to do anything with Ariel only to use her to lour her father in. So the father would have to give up his Triton in order to get his daughter back the Sea Witch Ursula only used Ariel to get the Triton to be the Queen of the ocean.
This is the most spoilerific Making Of... I've ever seen. If I was watching this in 1989, I'd have been so annoyed! Watching it in 2011, however, it's fascinating.

@RockAngel7878 ..They only based Ariel's looks on Alyssa Milano but they wanted a voice actress who could sing and had experience voice acting & singing. I agree with you StrongGlad999. Still, I had my "Disney is too immature/candide for me to watch" moment when I was a teenager. Now that I am an adult and on my way to become an animator... I slowly begin to like Disney again.
Well, it wasn't also entirely due to my age... Disney did bad/stupid movies too. They get better now... and they FINALLY reopened the 2D animation studio !

HOWEVER today's kids have to deal with a LOAD of sexist things on TV. Go pick on that stuff, and leave well enough alone a movie that was intended to be clean. Society is so perverted. roflmao
People miss the point of these films. But then again this movie was made in a different time frame. People today are taught to think really hard and sometimes even the simplest of films can do you(society) in. This is just a simple movie to me. As a kid longing, passion, and music is what I took from this film to heart. Sexist-BUNK!
disney movies are fun but the one thing i dont like about them is that they are quite sexist, they show kids that girls are helpless and need a big handsome prince to come along and save them... but saying that, most of the time kids dont realize that because its what is expected anyway lol cant really blame disney movies, blame society! haha
This was the start of a 5 year Disney revival, and then they sunk back again. Maybe they will capitalize on the critical success of their recent film and revive again.
Conveniently, in the entire time Disney was doing nothing important, Pixar was making masterpieces. So I could still get my animated fix these last 15 years.
I prefer Hand-Drawn animation MUCH MORE than Computer animation. I think that Computer animation should only help Drawn animation (like the Stampede scene in Lion King and Deep Canvas in Tarzan)
@NusquamNihil its nice how all the disney princes r kind and true but then u get someone like Gaston in beauty and the beast. he's not a prince but he takes the prince roll originally if u think about it.
Walt Disney just knew what he was doing, as well as Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. They all knew what would be timeless. I love it how this movie still has that POP/contemporary feeling. It's just not dated. And of course when I go to the beach, see water, rain, or get in the shower, I think of this movie. lol It is just a great movie from my childhood, that I never forgot. It was just that good a movie to me.
I agree with you! They should release Little Mermaid in Theaters in 3-D. I would like to see it on the big screen because it came out a year before I was born. It's the BEST DISNEY FILM EVER!
Hahaha I love them! My best friend used to wear them for almost as long as I'd known her. She finally got tired of the things and bought smaller ones. I used to love putting them on =P
o.o Am I the only one who noticed this? Seriously, I wouldnt be suprised because my sister got a TLM book and I was pissed because her fin color wasnt right, neither were her shells the right purple....o.o i luff tlm
No, you're not the only one who noticed, but you seem to be the only one making a big deal out of it... They had like 6 different animators for Ariel; maybe some mistakes were made, but no one cares.
One thing I can't stand is when people watch beautifully animated movies like this and point out every little miscellaneous "mistake" that can be seen... -_-
@kickers0gwapa Heehehehehe! We are NEVER too old for Disney because many of Disney film's are Awesome (Good story, soundtrack / score, voice actors and the animations itself) I am 19 btw
I think its sad that today none of my friends appreciate the beauty of 2d classics like this! When i tell them i love the little mermaid, they laugh and say "isn't that a kids movie?"
Walt Disney himself said, if you aim your cartoon only at children, you're doomed to failure.
Fingers crossed that the princess and the frog will breathe new life into the genre!
@StrongGlad999 You are COMPLETELY Right mate! This is a thing that i like MUCH in many of Disney's films. The fact that they are suitable for All audiences, not only ''Kids''. Fortunately Princess and the Frog was positively criticized (I did not watched this film yet). Maybe this is a new Renaissance? Hopefully yes
@StrongGlad999 I agree with you on the whole cartoon thing and I think your friends that you say that disapprove of this film are total jugheads because they don't know what it's like to imagine being a kid again after a very long time of forgetting what is very special in your life. You should ALWAYS treasure something like The Little Mermaid forever.
@StrongGlad999 me (17) and my sister (22) live for disney we were brought up on it and love it 2 pieces! we still watch it we're currently trying to get all the movies on dvd but i find it rly hard to let go of my childhood VCRS i am so confident and passionate bout my love for disney tht i express it 2 everyone my age nd dnt care what they say...but most people love it too....i love it so much tht my 18th birthday party is disney themed nd everyone is expected 2 dress up!! i share ur love :) xx
@StrongGlad999 Same with me! Teenagers today do not care about the beauty of 2d animation in Disney. They refer to them as "kids movies" or just say they're boring. I'm like the only one in my school that appreciates this stuff for it's beauty and breth-taking animation.....not just a movie.
Computerish animation is souless, it is not the ''art of animation'' (we can see this at the end of the Credits in traditionally animated features of the Renaissance).
I think that 3D animation (like in the Stampede scene in The Lion King, Deep Canvas in Tarzan, ballroom dance scene in Beauty and the Beast etc.) and Computer effects (like in The Transformation scene in Beauty and the Beast etc.) should only help traditional animation.
It's a shame the little mermaid is a tiny bit before my time, it's one of my favorite Disney movies. I would LOVE to see this on the big screen.
Now that I'm older, I not only fall in love with the story all over again when I watch these movies, but I learn to appreciate the artwork and music even more.
I can't imagine having kids and taking them to see 90% of the kid's movies today. Movies like this are truly FAMILY films, it's not marketed just for kids, but for EVERYBODY.
I think the movie would have been better if she stayed a mermaid and Eric just kept Ariel in a giant fish tank and then he'd come and fuck her in her fish PUSSY!
I saw this movie the first time I was 11, I'm glad to know that even an adult , I still the little girl singing "That ' s why it's hotta unda di wata" LOL
Oh, wow. It almost makes me cry everytime I think of this movie = it's the first one I ever saw in my life and apparently I was in love with Eric (my dad says) at the age of 2 until I grew a little older and realized that he was just an animated character.
Yeah, what happens is she grows to the size of Mt. Rushmore, gets impaled on the bow of a ship, and half melts/half explodes into a million tiny pieces.
Yes Alyssa, we all know what happens. The little mermaid is heartbroken when the prince marries another. The little mermaid jumps into the sea and turns into seafoam...
BUT thank god Disney changed the original ending and slapped a happy one on their version cause I really love Ariel. Not just her, but the whole cast of The Little Mermaid. I'm glad she got her prince.
Back Then Disney movies were made and felt because the people making the movie were feeling the same way. Now the movies are only made for money, that is why they suck. There is no feeling.
Yes But..The directors of the little mermaid as well as the animator.. And my uncle are all working on the Princess and the frog.. i suppply one of the background voices.. And when i went there i could feel the magic.. EVEERYONE WAS SO EXCITED and realy into there characters..Plus it is 2-d not that 3-d junk. OH AND IT IS A MUSICAL!!.
One of my all time favorite movies, and Disney's masterpeice. Thanks so much for posting this! It was awesome to see the cast and learn about all the hard work that went into making a movie I've known all my life (I was born in 1989) Disney always does a beautiful job with their classics. I love and agree with what Alyssa Milano said in the begnning of part 1, about how even though these are fairytales, they hold a timeless meaning and teach us important lessons about life.
Beauty and the Beast was a Masterpiece and is the only animated filmed to be nominated for an Oscar, but it probably wouldn't have come into existence had it not been for the success and praise that The Little Mermaid brought disney. It's the film that started the renaissance of the 90's. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan. They're all classics but it started with a mermaid's wish to be part of that world...
They would have stuck with their live action stuff, like the TV shows (The Torklesons!) and movies (Bedknobs and Broomsticks) and such. I love traditional animation, too. But Pixar brought such a breath of fresh air into Disney, and continues to produce such beautiful work today.
I reiterate the comments of many others before me: WHY wasn't this MARVELOUS piece included on the Platinum Edition DVD??? Sigh...once again, thank goodness for youtube, for making these "buried treasures" available for our enjoyment.
i really love this move! this movie came out we i was 3 years old. i love it so much know i have a 1 year old baby and her middle name is Ariel named after the movie. Little Marmaid is my favorite movie in the world. I heard that alyssa milano was ariels voice too.. i see not.
PATTYBUG!!!!! Thank you. This is my favorite movie of all time and I have never seen this. It is so funny cause I heard that Alyssa Milano was a model for Ariel. I see it now. I would like to thank you and your Mom for this. Be Blessed!!!
Mark Dindal, the guy that directed "Cats Don't Dance", and Disney films such as "The Emperor's New Groove" and "Chicken Little", right?

People today are taught to think really hard and sometimes even the simplest of films can do you(society) in. This is just a simple movie to me. As a kid longing, passion, and music is what I took from this film to heart. Sexist-BUNK!
TRISAND 1 year ago
disney movies are fun but the one thing i dont like about them is that they are quite sexist, they show kids that girls are helpless and need a big handsome prince to come along and save them... but saying that, most of the time kids dont realize that because its what is expected anyway lol cant really blame disney movies, blame society! haha
declanser 1 year ago
This was the start of a 5 year Disney revival, and then they sunk back again. Maybe they will capitalize on the critical success of their recent film and revive again.
Conveniently, in the entire time Disney was doing nothing important, Pixar was making masterpieces. So I could still get my animated fix these last 15 years.
Skidonti 1 year ago

It was just that good a movie to me.

they actually did put it back on the big screen back in 97 but you're right they should definitely re-release it again. it's been 20 years.

I agree with you! They should release Little Mermaid in Theaters in 3-D. I would like to see it on the big screen because it came out a year before I was born. It's the BEST DISNEY FILM EVER!

I think Disney was debating if Ariel's fin should be green or blue. When the part when Ariel is humming around her family. Her fin is blue. :07
Blue

Green
0:44
Blue, and there is no scales.
o.o Am I the only one who noticed this? Seriously, I wouldnt be suprised because my sister got a TLM book and I was pissed because her fin color wasnt right, neither were her shells the right purple....o.o i luff tlm
Runningfoot2009O 2 years ago
No, you're not the only one who noticed, but you seem to be the only one making a big deal out of it... They had like 6 different animators for Ariel; maybe some mistakes were made, but no one cares.
One thing I can't stand is when people watch beautifully animated movies like this and point out every little miscellaneous "mistake" that can be seen... -_-
anyway... back to the video I go. =)

Hopefully yes
oopaulorafael 1 year ago
@StrongGlad999 I agree with you on the whole cartoon thing and I think your friends that you say that disapprove of this film are total jugheads because they don't know what it's like to imagine being a kid again after a very long time of forgetting what is very special in your life. You should ALWAYS treasure something like The Little Mermaid forever.

@StrongGlad999 me (17) and my sister (22) live for disney we were brought up on it and love it 2 pieces! we still watch it we're currently trying to get all the movies on dvd but i find it rly hard to let go of my childhood VCRS i am so confident and passionate bout my love for disney tht i express it 2 everyone my age nd dnt care what they say...but most people love it too....i love it so much tht my 18th birthday party is disney themed nd everyone is expected 2 dress up!! i share ur love :) xx
wont4get1992 1 year ago
@StrongGlad999 Same with me! Teenagers today do not care about the beauty of 2d animation in Disney. They refer to them as "kids movies" or just say they're boring. I'm like the only one in my school that appreciates this stuff for it's beauty and breth-taking animation.....not just a movie.
wwedivajewel95 1 year ago
@StrongGlad999 Agreed, mate!
Computerish animation is souless, it is not the ''art of animation'' (we can see this at the end of the Credits in traditionally animated features of the Renaissance).
I think that 3D animation (like in the Stampede scene in The Lion King, Deep Canvas in Tarzan, ballroom dance scene in Beauty and the Beast etc.) and Computer effects (like in The Transformation scene in Beauty and the Beast etc.) should only help traditional animation.
oopaulorafael 1 year ago 5

@StrongGlad999 There are many facial expressions, comedy and drama situations that are only possible in traditional animation.

The reprise are so boring and dull and are sung by an amateur with a whiny voice which doesn't fit Ariel. Most foreign versions have better lyrics

You can't talk. You didn't spend months looking for the right actress to fit the voice fo the character YOU didn't create.
Unless you are experienced in this type of art production yourself, you can't really criticize.

One of my all time favorite movies, and Disney's masterpeice. Thanks so much for posting this! It was awesome to see the cast and learn about all the hard work that went into making a movie I've known all my life (I was born in 1989) Disney always does a beautiful job with their classics. I love and agree with what Alyssa Milano said in the begnning of part 1, about how even though these are fairytales, they hold a timeless meaning and teach us important lessons about life.
warmhearted1717 3 years ago
Noway, Disney's masterpiece is Beauty and the Beast- the only animated film EVER to be nominated for Best Picture at the academy awards.
Treemeadow 3 years ago
Beauty and the Beast was a Masterpiece and is the only animated filmed to be nominated for an Oscar, but it probably wouldn't have come into existence had it not been for the success and praise that The Little Mermaid brought disney. It's the film that started the renaissance of the 90's. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan. They're all classics but it started with a mermaid's wish to be part of that world...

What would have happened to Disney, then?

They would have stuck with their live action stuff, like the TV shows (The Torklesons!) and movies (Bedknobs and Broomsticks) and such. I love traditional animation, too. But Pixar brought such a breath of fresh air into Disney, and continues to produce such beautiful work today.
