Hey do you know if on these old euro cars if the chassis parts such as the ball joints, wheel bearings, etc are sealed or can you inject them with grease? Cause I know on old American cars you can but im not sure about these old euro cars.
@mrdestoryit That is a very good question! on these old Volvos you don't have any grease fittings, but many old european cars had grease fittings. It's more common on american cars, and they continued with it longer, mostly on light trucks in the 90s-2000.
@joorua95 Very COOL! If you can, please make a video of the first look at the car or first start and put it on youtube, it would be very fun to watch!
The old girl has a bad case of the sneezes. It's probably the timing. It wouldn't be intermittently backfiring if it was a wrong fire order as suggested below. I love the sound of a B18/B20 starting.
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs + injection and tank clean and rustfree
This thing has the most unique cranking sound i've ever heard. Especially right at the beginning. And also, the backfire at 1:45 looks like it startled you lol, the camera kinda wobbled when it happened hehehe

Had a 69 131, the diaphragms go in those stromberg carbs. Easy fix with a rebuild kit, and a good clean. I'd recommend new plugs as well, at the very least.
Definitely looks and sounds like a carb or fuel/mixture to me as well....sounds like its possibly not getting the right mixture, etc. Either that or it could have a possible partial blockage somewhere in the fuel system??
And I thought my engine mounts were bad!. The backfiring could also be from some intake valves not seating right, possibly stuck/bad lifters from sitting a while.
volvo engines are pretty easy to work on, you should get that one working pretty good if you just start it a few times and let it run till it's reached the optimal temperature, meaning when it's done heating up.
Cool car. Should have had a air filter on it. Everytime it backfires it lifts the piston in the carb and gives full throttle. Thats whats killing it. But also a general tune up.
@Zachry86 Actually, I believe that piston in the carburetor adjusts the venturi to keep the mixture constant. There is a butterfly throttle valve if I'm not mistaken.
@n33d4killz The main piston in the adjusts the fuel flow. The butterfly valve controls the main airflow? The mixture is controlled by another little jet? Im not sure about this though. Mostly working on EFI cars and simple motorbike carbs now.
Why don't you think about an electric motor??? The internet is full with plan's and description's. I planning this too, but i don't have so much money to do it, so I will not much help in this right now. SRY for the English.
Sounds like it could stand to have the points filed & regapped. *ignition system is wead due to bad point corrosion or gap or both. Good sounding starter motor ! Nice car! Good luck getting it on the road!
Lol I had an 1986 volvo that I just sold. I love those lil engines. Mine had the red block with 350,000 miles on it and it just had a little blow by but still ran very strong. LOVE IT!
i would say rebuild the carb put new spar plugs and check the timing on it lol but im sure its the carb, its probally really dirty from sitting that long
Take that POS Stromberg off and put dual SU's on....much better setup

Sticky valves no doubt, run it with some detergent oil will loosten them up.The problem is it will loosten up everything holding the motor together.

the backfiring is probably caused by a sticky valve, when it runs for a little while it will start to move easier and it should be fine

I'd say retard the timing a little bit, and give it a good shot of MMO in the oil and perhaps clean the carb and it should be golden!

Your timing is probably off, or you've got a bad plug.
When my plugs were old, I was getting backfiring.
Also, I think you might want to put a new coil in it, because at the end, it didnt look like it wanted to start again.
Good luck with it!
