there legaly only aloud 4 watts not 20 and go for you ham lic its a lot of fun and its also easy to if you need some help let me know this is N4ANE kj4tee is my old call
I was really big into CB in the early 1990's. A CB with a linear (amp) and upper and lower channels is best. You have to get your license with a HAM, so the government has a record of everything you do, and the FCC monitors.
With a CB with uppers, lowers, and a linear you get the same interference free reception without a license or a record of what you're doing. And the same range, I spoke from NY State to Jamaica, to England, to California with my Ranger RCI 2950.
I hope that you are well on your way to getting your license, nothing wrong with 11M but why not have the whole spectrum at your finger tips. The A99 is a great performer on 10. I just helped a friend with his. His was either damaged or the rings just don't do much, my analyzer showed no difference when tuning. In that case you can physically cut the end of the antenna for 10M or just use an antenna tuner. He used a tuner and has made contacts all over the country.
@GatheringSticks I just won a 10 meter HTX 10 on ebay for $50... It seems like a good starter rig... Just gotta get licensed, I'll let ya know how it works out...
Nice Realistic CB Radio...........go ahead and become a Ham.........I do both also.I have a full UK Ham licence and still enjoy CB Radio too......Cheers Dave
yeah all that's skip not ther all the time the sun spots are post to going up but get in too ham radio it's a lot of fun i love talking to others 10.000 miles out and you can tune in all the gov. stuff i have a ft-897d and i love it i no i can run in on batt's if i have to 73.kc9kuh
You do know that "CB" isn't really "Ham Radio" (The CB band used to be the 11 meter ham band until the FCC made it into the no-license Citizens Band)...
Yes, I know... I said that I was seriously debating about getting a Ham Radio and a Ham license.. I know there is a big difference between CB and Ham...
My recommendation is that if you intend to get your Ham license do so with the commitment right at the start that you will not operate on frequencies or at power levels that you are not licensed for.
We sure do not need any more arm chair heroes clogging up the bands.
I totally agree with ya... its going to be awhile before I take on this venture, but I plan to use it within the proper protocols during everyday use, but during an emergency... desperate times call for desperate measures... ya know?.
are you saying you can reach across north america with this CB setup? wow thats impressive! For the SHTF i would not worry about this being illegal, though I wonder if somehow you can be caught with this now..
Yes, any CB radio can do this... your signal goes out and up,away from your antenna, bounces off the atmosphere and comes back down hundreds of miles away... its weird because it sounds like they are 20 feet away talking on the radio, so loud and clear... it is very cool!
@imigrantpunk the only way i have ever talked that far is by shooting skip. basically you have to have a side band cb radio usb, lsb(upper side band and lower side band) and am. i have talked that far but only on side band and it like he said it bounces off the upper atmosphere but it nor a constant if you want a constant 200 -500 miles you need like a 40 meter rig
@offthegridsurvival The official book, with the test questions and answers, is usually published by the ARRL. Go to ARRL(dot)org, then catalog &store, then down to licencing. The book on beginning tell you what you need to learn. There is so much new stuff like orbiting sattilite repeaters, that I I'm way behind.
@offthegridsurvival Whoops! The book is at ARRL(dot)org , then services/publications/on line store, then scroll down to Licensing and Upgrade. I was hard to locate.
I dunno, FCC says it cb skips are illegal... Here is a quote from wikipedia under shooting skip: In the United States, it is illegal to engage in, or attempt to engage in, CB communications with any station more than 250 km (150 miles) from an operator's location.[26] This restriction exists to keep CB as a local radio service. The legality of shooting skip is not an issue in most other countries.
SHTF Comm's (minimum):
1- A shortwave radio, preferably one that can be powered by DC also and capable of decoding SSB transmissions. Most of the important ones are SSB.
2- A police scanner suitable for your area.
3-Two pairs of FRS radios with a supply of batteries. FRS radios are cheap.
4- CB radio, preferably one that can do SSB
Advanced:
HF transceiver
Secure short range tactical radios
If you want suggestions on more private digital short range comm's for group use PM me!

Whats the name of the study book? I wouldn't want nothing too fancy or technical, just a basic rig to learn from...
