Forty years ago I probably would have felt the same way. Now, at my age, the chances of my improving my swing significantly by any means are slim. I will, therefore, happily take the slightly added distance and height the hybrids provide. Just call me a sissy if you wish.
I think the most usable piece of advice here for the weekend golfer is to toss the old long irons in the dumpster and get some hybrids. Why continue to frustrate yourself when something a little better is so readily available. My hybrids have added a nice new dimension to my game.
@warwolfii Hybrids are for sissies. I only swing 80 mph and I play a 2-PW set of blades. And it worked betterfor my game. If you get a hybrid, you are taking a shortcut and your swing will not improve. Only results will. If you really want to be better, improve your swing. Then your success will translate into every club and every shot in your bag. Not only that, but you also save money by not spending 200 bucks for each hybrid.
@Willsstrs Hybrids don't necessarily replace long irons themselves, they replace both a long iron and a short wood, so you would have less clubs in your bag for some other extra clubs and what not. That's why I use hybrids. Don't say they're for sissies, thats ignorant.
This advice is not bad in and of itself, but I don't think you'll find many amateurs with their hands in front of the ball - as in nearly zero. Beginners out there - skip this one for now and focus on getting your hands in front of the ball, because if you can't do that, you won't ever break 90.
Hybrids are incredible.. They are bit funny to use at first because you think you need to swing them like a fairway wood but once figure out they are no different from a middle iron they really help.
I use a 3 and 4 as hybrid but keep 5 iron because I happen to hit my best shots with it :).
@cmares58 - Actually, you might be surprised. The inherent design characteristics of many hybrids are to help get the ball up in the air easier...and given the same launch angle and spin rate, a ball taking off with more ball speed will reach a higher peak height and also drop down more vertically to the ground.
He told us 3 things... the first one is avoid holding your angle too late like you were swinging as hard as Tiger Woods; give it a chance to pop the ball little higher. You can do this easily by correctly your swing just a bit and taking off some of your late lag in your wrist.
The third advice was too a good one: he tells us that our swing may actually not be good enough to hit well with long distance irons... improve your general swing speed and change your iron game.
Dude i know his intentions are good, but its hard enough as it is to have that good impact angle, i'd rather hit short irons with good impact then hit long irons okay with wrong impact
There are no swings in this particular video because I thought the information provided would be self-explanatory.
If you'd like to see some swings, the most recent ones I have as of today on the internet are on my personal channel. Search for the video "Jaacob Bowden Golf - Winter Practice in Zurich". That particular video has several swings from earlier in the week.
hi can someone help me please, i have just recently started to rotate on my backswing so that my back is facing the target. i find my legs coming up instead of just twisting with my body.??????? any help would be appreciated. thanks.
It depends and it's difficult to say without seeing you swing, but you may just be dipping down a little bit when you swing. Have a friend watch you or take a face-on video shot of your swing to see if this might be the case.
We also have a video about hitting fat shots elsewhere on the channel. Take a look at that and see if it helps get you started.
i like to look at the videos for tips but the best thing i have done is just get 100 balls and go to the park or a school feild and just hit ball after ball until you find what works for you i put a mark on all my balls so it leaves a mark on my club face to see exactly where i hit it as with cosistency i now have my legs straight with very little flex and try to mimic iron byron machine so the bottom half of me stays quite stationary and this has stopped me hitting fat
I use black electric tape on the bottom of the iron to make sure I'm hitting it on the center. You can get some 'sticky' paper that goes on the face of the club so you can see where your ball is striking the club face. Both are very helpful.
Can someone help me with my swing? For iron shots i sometimes start my swing with my hands already ahead of the ball with the club at an angle and sometimes i do it when the clubs straight up and down. I have good contact both was, but I want to stick with one swing, which way is better?
I do the same thing and wonder if I'm doing it the wrong way. I start with my hand out in front of the ball. when I see pictures in golf magazines, they always appear to be holding it straight up and down.
Although I think that hands forward is more popularly taught, there are instructors that advocate both ways. I don't think either one of them is "wrong"...success is found within the whole range. Personally, I like my hands slightly forward, but favoring the straight up side. Basically, it mimics the impact position that I want to get to. If you can make good contact either way, then it probably won't matter too much which one you go with.
Hey I have always been taught to have my hands in front of the ball, but what is the straight up and down one? I've never heard of that one would you mind explaining that one to me please?
Just remember one very important thing. You are not simply returning to your address position. You create an angle between the shaft and your hands IN THE BACKSWING,you have created what is popularly known as the, "Flying Wedge." With a straight left arm and hand, and the shifting of weight to the left side use this wedge to strike the ball with the right hand. It is in the backswing that the angle is created with which to strike the ball, not the set up.Practice w 1/4,1/2 &3/4 swings.
I'll keep that in mind for future videos, thanks. ;-)
In the meantime, just briefly, be careful of changing your swing and/or equipment around too much. Even changing the loft on a wedge by one degree can throw your short game off for a bit. As Count Yogi would say, it's hard to perfect something you are constantly changing.
Something that I have trouble with and cannot seem to find info about is how do I determine the distance I should stand away from the ball. I either seem too far away and hook the ball, or too close and push it out. Any suggestions please?
It sounds like you already have an answer. ;-) A simple solution would be to find the happy medium between where you hook & push the ball that produces a relatively straight shot. That said, there are different schools of thought on how far away from the ball to be...all of which will likely have validity. Without the space to get in to too much detail, I would say to find a spot that is comfortable & balanced. Then adjust the lie angles on your irons to fit the way you want to swing.
When I play in the golf course most of my shots is sliced. I went to my coach and he says that am going across the ball so then I stopped doing that. I played in the golf course today and was trying to hit underneath ball (from my coach advice), I also tried to rotating my body to make sure that I didn't stop moving when I strake my ball but I still slice the shot and really want to draw the ball. oh yeah the golf course is always windy just let you know. I wounder if you could help me.
Im am not someone who should be giving lessons, however, I have been taking lessons since the first of the year and my pro says the the club and your body alignment (spine angle) should form a 45 degree angle. I hope that helps

the easiest way to accomplish this is to play the ball up in your stance - it accomplishes the same thing.

I welded some rebar onto my pitching wedge and now I have the best damn 3 iron the world has ever known. I call it the panther 500X.

What more specifically do you mean by legs coming up? One or both coming off the ground? Straightening of the legs?
