its definitly a rimm shot man, if it were from the trigger pad it would sound the same evry time he hit it BUT it quite clearly gets louder or quieter from shot to shot

I have a roland set with the same pads like that. With the snare you can get up to three sounds out of a single pad. The main snare, a rim shot, or rim click. But you can always substitute any of those three with any sound from the module. Moreover, it wouldn't difficult to tweak sounds in a studio to get the desired sound.
