The original arcade gradius was on bubble system. Bubble system carts needed to warm up before they worked properly. So they had a small bootstrap program that would play this music and display the countdown to give the main memory time to warm up. The arcade was re-released on non bubble system memory, but they didn't change the program rom, so it still played the music and showed the countdown. :) However the countdown is too fast on MAME.

I got the NES version on the Wii. This version his better music than the NES version.
