This series was ace in billions of ways, and I would if I was super rich with millions or billions I would live there and I woudl go to the stone circle and photograph the stones and keep the pictures as souvenirs.
This featured the house called Avebury Manor which the BBC are about to feature in a "makeover"series which starts on 24th November, with Penelope Keith & Paul Martin. How do I know?I saw some of the filming of Children of The Stones.
I'm a 70s child but have never seen this. It looks awesome so will check out the dvd. Thanks. Love the intro - somehow a bit Wicker Man, one of my very favourite films.
Classic seventies nostalgia TV...remember being terrified watching this when i was about 8...music was soooooo spine chilling....and love those old HTV graphics....makes todays childrens TV look so PC by comparison...nothing like good memories of having the wits frightened out of you
I have often wondered about this , oh so creepy programme from my childhood. Could only remember the bit that whatsoever the child drew happened, and rubbing it out didn't work. The stones getting closer was really scary! But I can't remember the end. (I was most probably behind the sofa!)
I am sure the red car, Gareth Thomas is driving is a woolsely and it is a super series I have got it on DVD. I know if I had millions or billions, I would move to Avebury and live in a nice detached bungalow with two bedrooms.

@chrisftu "had alot of nightmares when i was a kid but it was worth it." Hehe! I guess you are right. It can be healthy to be scared occasionally. It was rather chilling!
When was this? I remember watching it and wanting to know where the village was, and finding out its story. Must be the mid 70s looking at the car and the clothes. Great days, so lucky to have been a kid back then.
Hey guys. I just watched this series yesterday and really, really enjoyed it although to be quite honest the only thing that put me off was the singing (more like wailing XP)
So I was wondering if anyone could recommend me some good "scary" retro childrens TV. UK, American, from anywhere I don't mind. Being a child of the 80s I missed these classics...
Oh. My. God. This and 'The Changes' - both utterly terrifying. They have stayed with me too. I would have been 8 for 'The Changes' and 9 for 'Children of the Stones' and I have never forgotten them. Stone circles still make me a bit nervous and this prog is why.
[Nice to see Gareth as a young man. Even though I have seen him at the RSC a couple of times, he is always Blake for me (Blakes 7) and I was tragically excited to see him in Torchwood.]

I was about 5 when this came out, I remember the opening music scaring me shitless. This used to be on in the afternoon and I can remember that stone in the road from this episode. It's weird when you don't see something for 30 odd years and then, bang, there it is again. Thanks.
Filmed in Avebury - still have this entire series on DVD - remember watching it in my much younger years - intriguing - like Stonehenge, ley lines et al!
Used to be on Nickelodeon in the 80's same line up as Into the Labyrinth and Tomorrow People. Back When they had the real You Can't Do That on Television.
@snotnosedlilkid and me , they should have really looked at how fucking scary this stuff out in the 70s was for young children ,does stick in the memory though ,bye
Holy crap...they really knew what they were doing back then. I mean I watch this and it's so much better than anything you'd see from the last 20 years. I love watching old Brit mini-series. Fantastic and usually scary as shit. The music alone...they just did it BETTER back then. Even comparing the 1980 Day of the Triffids to last year's version, no bloody comparison. I'll take the 80's miniseries over that plonk any day. But this. Can't watch it alone and forget about turning the lights off...
@CrueLoaf do you have the haunting of cassie palmer I saw that as well as children of the stone on nickelodeon in the usa as they aired it from like81-84
yeah wet my pants at this my bro had to go to bed with me lol..remember a part were they dance around the stones chanting anyone seen it on youtube!!..
Just watched this entire series on DVD the other night and was quite impressed. We never had this shown in the states. Have been to Avebury twice and that's why I wanted to see the series. It was really a lot of fun, but the music was pretty scary, and it takes A LOT to scare me musically! Thanks for posting.
I went to Avebury once recently and i asked why the souvenir shop didnt sell the dvd. They had not even heard of the program!! I was a little shocked!
In a way, I'm not surprised they did not know about it. But they should find out, as it is a real lost treasure. I wish I could have seen it as a child. What a different take on it there would have been. . . however, I really enjoyed it and now am a fan!
Hello LR, I've also been to Avebury a few times as my mum lives nearby in Chiseldon and I agree - it is lovely. However, don't forget that at sometime in the middle-ages (and during later times I think) many of the stones were either toppled and buried, or broken up and destroyed. I suspect that the reason was because of the "powerful effect" these mysterious pre-Christian stones had. Their very presence must have been a threat to the church's authority.
im 42 now and i remember this as being totally scary when it came out around 77 or so. I have seen many so called scary movies since but NOTHING scared me as much as this especially as it was shown in the evening and was meant for kids. Something about those stones. Shows how old i am. I knew this guy from this before he ever did Blakes 7 !!
Hee hee! Thanks for this. Yes, I still seem to have a few images in my head about this series. Of course they might be wrong but, can you confirm the following. I seem to remember that a girl in a wheel chair lived in a poorly furnished house near the stones and that a boy befriended her and used to visit her. I remember the boy drawing the stones and, for some reason, someone then drawing eyes on them. The next day they looked out of the window to see the stones all staring at them!
@38dragoon38 . Yes!!! I remember it, but other than my sister have not met anyone else who does. I would love to know what it was. People always cite Children of the Stones & think I've confused it with something else when I mention the drawing bit.
Dear RA, many thanks for your comments. I now know that I didn't just dream all this stuff! One thing is for sure - they will never make such scary children's programmes ever again which I personally think is a real shame.
...Also: do you remember a series that featured a boy and girl who travelled through time? All I can remember about it was that the title music was "Mars" from Gustav Holst's "Plants" and that it was, again, scary. And do you remember "The Aeronaughts" about 2 French Mirage pilots? I used to love the aircraft and had the 1971 annual (it was only ever published that year). I've never met anyone who remembers it!
Dear EC, many thanks for your reply - I'll check out "Timeslip" sometime. I seem to recall the girl wearing a tartan skirt and having pig-tails. The boy (her brother I think) was much younger. The "Mars" music was the most memorable thing about it. I'm guessing that it must have been complete rubbish otherwise more people would remember it. Also I used to like watching some of the weird Eastern European (Socialist states) cartoons you occasionally saw but that's another story...
is this the show in which a little boy was chased by a man who turns into a blob-like monster? i remember a scene from it, where he is chasing the little boy, while transformed into his blob-monster guise, down through a long tube of stone or something...?
You are thinking of "Under the Mountain," which aired on Nickelodeon as part of "The Third Eye." It is often confused with "Children of the Stones" because the twins in "Under the Mountain" have a set of hand-held alien stones that they use as psychic-powered weapons.
I remember this, it was brilliant - all I can remember about it was them being stranded in this house with the stones outside getting closer. I remember another similar programme around that time too, but the only thing I can remember about that one was that these people feared the electric pylons, something was using them to move around - can anyone remember what that programme was called?
I recall that pilon programme. Also featured farm equipment too I think. I still, to this day, look at pylons and think of that series! They are kind of eerie! Can't think if the name though.
Isnt the one you are thinking about the one where a bedridden girl draws the garden outside her bedroom window and puts some stones in which come to life?
This one here is the one thats a bit like a kiddy version of The Wicker Man where all the brainwashed villagers say "happy day" to everyone.
I want the other one, but cant remember what it was called. Boo.

It might be Timeslip. They crawled through a hole in a fence & just appeared in another time. No high tech wizardry back then !
First they went back to WW2 Then they went forward to 2 futures, one where Britain was frozen & one where it was a jungle.
It had CJ from 'Reggie Perrin' in it, if thats any help.
