  • i will NEVER cease to love this song, as a gay single male i reli shudnt love it but hey its melancollia in extreme lol xxx

  • This is the saddest song I have ever heard!!!

  • This almost brought me to tears and it gave me goosebumps all over my body. Dolly, you're amazing.

  • OMG DOLLY ! This song made me cry my eyes out...

  • Grab this music on media outlet online. Just find it with Gooogle ;)

  • I HAVE NEVER HEARD A MORE BEAUTIFUL VOICE!

  • it's from her 1st album "the fairest of them all" now on cd with her 2nd album "My favourite songwriter porter wagoner", two amazing albums on OMNI RECORDINGS

  • "Little Sparrow" is an awesome CD! I think there are 2 versions: the 1st is the best!

Has this and "Mountain Angel" and "Seven Bridges Row" and "Shine" etc. SO GOOD!!

  • I wore out 2 video tapes of this concert. I still listen to it and I'm 43 now. I love every minute of it. Dolly is so genuine and so damn talented. I luv her alot and we should all be grateful to be alive while she is on this planet sharing her gift of music..

  • This song is powerful. Dolly should release it. My hat is off to her for her songwriting talent. This song knocks it out of the park.

  • @sartainja She is an "American Treasure" indeed!!

  • Dolly is a world hit why she's sings and writes her songs sings like a angel and shes hears her heart and shes love the UK too!

  • One of her greatest, most-overlooked songs. I would add to that list "Daddy Come and Get Me," "Early Morning Breeze," "What a Heartache," and "Wildest Dreams." Her upcoming Lifetime Achievement award from the Grammys is much deserved.

  • @markcosborne She more tan anyone deserves that award

  • I agree with Carl Dean, she's an Angel.

  • I have this concert on DVD. Including Real Love concert with her and Kenny Rogers. A verrry generous woman, whom was at this concert, videotaped it. & when i had talked to her about Dolly, she gave me a bunch of stuff. She converted this concert and Real Love concert to DVD & gave it to me. They're my treasures (:

  • written when she was 18! amazing. America. let's see Dolly for the genius she is.

  • @deanste Nobody writes like her.. not even William Skakespeare

  • Love it

  • I Love this song!! its sad... haha

  • i rented thw "VHS" when it came out

  • Probably my favorite Dolly song. I grew up listening to her and I have always loved her. She is such a talented artist. And to have written a song like this when she was only eighteen, definitely tells us that she was way ahead of her time.

  • This always makes me cry. I almost cant stand to hear it. These lyrics....and this voice of hers...it tears my heart apart just as she does!!!! I love you, Dolly!!!

  • the music in the background is really annoying. =_=

I love this song to put up with this

  • i love this song so much. One of the many, many wonderful things about Dolly is how shes not afraid to sing about things that may be contreversial, and sings them with such feeling. wonderful post, thankyou x

  • SuperBlackford, sorry... That was me...

  • Like Softkitti I too was at that concert and it was brilliant. Why o why is it not on DVD.

I actually had it on video, lent it to someone and haven't seen it or them since.

  • Oh my God! This song is amazing. ;_;

  • One of the BEST songs ever written!

  • @ChuckMonsey It helps men to understand what lots of young women go through.

  • Rare song. I have it on one album. What is most awesome about this song is the lyrics Dolly wrote and her courage to sing them--and with such feeling. She was not afraid to approach topics that needed to be discussed and brought out in the open at the time when they weren't dealth with with any empathy, such as the double standard and an unwed mother's dillemma. I applaud her for that!

  • let's write to dolly and get this concert out on dvd! Dolly Parton P.O. Box 150307 Nashville Tennessee 37215

I can't believe it's not available- saw it years ago and tried to get a dvd - no luck! Crazy, this is one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

  • oke

    SO EVERYBODDY WHO SEE THIS

write dolly and maby do it come out dvd

  • @softkitti I was lucky enough to see this concert several years ago on HBO and I was able to record it on vcr. Unfortunately I have tried to transfer things that I have taped from HBO onto dvd and it won't let because of "copyright" reasons. So I am keeping that video tape very precious.

  • ok,i,keep,commenting,but,this,song,is,battling,with,smokey,moutain,memories,4,my,all,time,fav,dolly,song,all,comments,welcome,i,just,adore,her,sad,songs!!!

  • Can anyone send me this song via email so i can play it on my computer...

  • i can relate i had the same thing happen to be july 6, 2001. accept i caught my own babygirl and she was dead when she came out. i still have that in my dreams like it happen yesterday

  • I am so sorry for your loss. Dolly's baby brother Larry was born on July 6th 1955 and the same happened to him. I'm sure, just as Dolly's family has never forgotten him, you will never forget your little girl. x

  • we heard this in my english class as a ballad

  • I was at this concert. Thanks for posting it was an incredible performance!

  • realy?

    woow how cool is that

do you have made pictures and vidio s made?

    how was that concerd?

    gr wessel

  • I envy U i was two young to know anything about Dolly then...

  • I can relate to this R.I.P Davia my baby girl

  • Good performance, but not as good as the album version - YouTube have taken it down unfortunately.

  • i too have become obsessed with this song since hearing Marianne Faithfulls version on the fantastic easy come easy go album.Dolly is a fantastic artist and what talent,i really love this!

  • Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazlewood do the best version...CD Fairytales and Fantasies

  • i have been brought up with dolly and i love her especially this song.

  • i recorded this concert off the tv when it was shown here in the UK back in the early 80's. i knew it was heavily edited, but i had no idea this was one of the songs they had cut out. personally i prefer the version on Little Sparrow, i think it's a softer version which suits the subject of the song better.

  • She did a bluegrass remake of it on Little Sparrow, and I think they're both good, but this one is my favorite.

  • Well, color me impressed!

I'm not a Dolly fan. I only came here because I've recently become obsessed with the Marianne Faithful cover of this song, and wanted to hear what it would sound like coming from Dolly.

Beautiful, mature song writing (she wrote this at 18?!?) and storytelling, and the delivery is heartfelt.

  • I'm glad you're impressed!

Dolly is one of the best singer/songwriters ever made!

    We love her!!!

  • I first saw this concert on HBO when I was six. This song still never fails to amaze me and Dolly's facial expressions and gestures are just haunting. She wrote this song when she was 18! GENIUS!

  • If I had the time, and energy (it's 2am and I'm soooo tired lol), I could gush about this performance for agggeeesss :) There are so many things not only to be complimented, but, really, to be in awe of -

    a) the lyrics

    b) intensity of her performance

    c) pure vocal power and emotion (how can you not be fighting off tears watching this?!)

    DOLLY = LOVE

You're my shining light, love you!!!!

  • This is a very sad song, but the saddest thing isn't that the baby died, or the man knocked her up pregnant and left, the saddest thing is that her own family turned against her. They were too damn worried about what the neighbors would say or how they'd be viewed in church.I love songs like these because they force people to look at blatant reality.

  • wow what a awesome song here Dolly..

  • O so brilliant..

  • so sad... please do this in your next concert tour

  • This is my friend's fav song by Dolly. It makes him cry everytime.

  • great up, been looking to hear this again... Happy New Year! Big love for Miss Parton, and the uploader!

  • thank you

  • thank you so, so much for uploading this! this vid has captured a wonderful song sung in a very intimate moment with such depth in content and a brilliant voice. One can see here how easy she sings--perfect in technique and wonderful in sound. Thanks to Dolly - and the uploader!)

  • thank you

  • The glam and glitz surface of the Parton story is so easily peeled away when you actually listen to her songs. She's a damn good songwriter.

  • I think this is her best song ever.

  • Dolly is the best!!! No matter what she does.

  • This is one of my favorite songs ever!

  • Oh my God! I'm moved to tears at the magnificence of this performance. I've loved Dolly since her 87/88 variety show when I was a kid. She is something much more special than anything I've ever known. Thank you dollyabba for posting, and bless you, Dolly, my hero!

  • I have this tape (vhs) from HBO years ago. I play it often...one of my favorites. Thanks for posting!

  • I don't know where you found this, but thanks so much, I remember seeing this 25 years ago, and have searched for years to find this song, always hearing it in my head and not knowing all the words, but feeling all the emotion I remember her singing into the words. I just bought tickets to her concert, coming this Saturday, and was searching youtube for her songs, and was so happy to finally hear this again. I will enjoy the show even more now. She is truly amazing

  • She released this song on her Little Sparrow album, if you wanted it.

  • To those who don't know, this song appears on "Little Sparrow" and it's perhaps one of the saddest things she's ever recorded. She even has a crying tremble on the record.

The first six of the 12 Parton children became "special carers" for the next six to follow. Well, the 10th child, Larry, was meant to be "Dolly's child", her mother said. Larry Parton was to be the sibling whom Dolly was to be the guardian sister of... As in this song, Larry was stillborn and that's scarred Dolly ever since.

  • one of her best songs.

  • Thank you thank you thank you! I knew I'd seen a video of this performance before...was just having trouble finding it! You're an angel! Thanks!
