The limiter wouldn't "destroy" anything-it would just keep your recording from hitting the ceiling during the ocassional high transient.
In any case, I don't think ANY portable recorder, let alone the H2, was designed to conduct "blow-out" tests-it was designed to record music or whatever in a civilized manner.
The H2 doesn't sound better, just quieter. I think with proper post production, the sound of the H2 would be better. Discard the limiter and start with a lower volume to prevent zero over. For just a shoot and go, the Sony wins in my opinion. You just have to pay attention to levels. If it's too loud, TURN YOUR MIC DOWN.
hey, I need to get some kind of really high quality sound recorder fairly soon, is this what im looking for? I need to record vocals, guitar (acoustic and electric) parts and possibly other instruments as well. do loud sounds fuzz on this recorder? thanks a lot
I just bought this to record a concert...it seems the limiter destroyed tha recording.....am i correct and should i not use it for a first row live recording?
@Axeshredder I'm looking for a recorder that can be used for concerts when you're standing front row... have you tested this one yet? Could help me a lot :)
@BambigetHIGHER see my chickenfoot videos...and Hendrix tribute....real important to the rec volumes adjusted to peak at 0...not +2..and youll be fine...gl
good thing..these days if your fumbling with a recorder..no one even notices..:)
I found if I set it the the, mic gain in the middle it works great! nice and clear.
I am just now testing the diff setting but so far so good.let me know what you guys find it, but for the price this thing rocks! I will try it with my band this weekend.
Anyone have this form of demonstration but with a band in a jam space playing metal really loud? I mean it's nice and all with this type of music and it coming from a dvd or whatever...but it's not even close to what my band pumps out and I want to try this unit.
I have the H2 and I played around with it a bit and I like it a lot. Keep in mind there is a high-pass filter that you can select to cut down on the boomy bass frequencies. There is also three different types of compression and the mic levels can be adjusted numerically for finer adjustments, besides the low, med, and high adjustment. It is crystal clear and simple to use. I did notice that it can sound distorted even though the mic levels are under the clipping stage. Just turn the input down!
Which of the 3 sensitivity settings did you use on the H2? I know there is quite a gap between the Hi and the Mid and low but I'm sure you could have achieved the same gain result playing with the record level on the H2 so it would have been as loud the cam mic but much cleaner.
Wow Gator.. you are fast with a reaction... I made this test for you an hour ago.. and its maybe 10 min on youtube ;). Im think im pretty satisfied with the quality. Next thing is try it on stage. I'll like to know how Huey's bass sounds :)

maybe you just have your h2 placed in the wrong place, sometimes if you place it better then it sounds more dynamic...
or so i have heard..

ha ha. excellent recording. loved the ending.
im trying to decide what recorder to buy. the H2 looks very tempting.

pretty good...a little 'pumping' with percussions ...does the H2 have adjustable (faster) 'recovery' settings on it's limiter?
candnrg 4 years ago
No. There are just a few presets and that's it.

Thats very good demo in a real life application.

I bet the sound quality with the limiter will improve with better placement. But thats just a guess.
Really nice demonstration, thanks. I've been thinking about getting one of these.

The H2 sounds damn good. The limiter wasn't so hot. Now you need to test it with a band.
