She is acting out the scene from the silent film "Broken Blossoms". Audiences back then were very appalled at the violence inflicted upon the young woman by her abusive father. This is the scene that really upset audiences when the father is trying to break into the closet to get to her. I guess the director was really impressed by her wailing and crying so he let her go at it, and rumor has it that people outside the studio tried to come in and help the screaming woman.
