@jaypatfan I do remember Chances R from 75-79 where I saw them several times and and heard them on WPGU on a regular basis. Awesome shows. Good to see this album is out in a remastered version, my vinyl copy is totally obselete now and I'd love to hear the band again.
Thi Thing with Progressive Rock I love the most is the Harmony, Creativity, Imagination Instrumentation and the overall sound that Star castle & Yes are able to capture!!!
Wow!! What an arrogant thing to say in such a stupid way!! Music isn't music unless you can tap your foot to it? Just tap your foot in 9/8, 13/8. 3/4 or whatever the time signature is. YES is music taken to the highest level in the rock genre.
Ahhh brings me back to my Prog days in High School 20 years ago blaring Star Castle in the 69 Superbee, One of my favorite bands, great to see them out playing!!!
I think that STARCASTLE's comparison with YES must be very flattering for the band------but as a critical listener, their sounds are mutually exclusive -----similar, yet distinctly separate and unique. Rock On STARCASTLE--- To the Fire Wind!
I would pay twice the price to see original STARCASTLE again.Terry, you're the best.Gary, RIP, you have touched so many of us . the BEST bass lines .the root of the music .thank you
I saw these guys at the War Memorial Coluseum in Fort Wayne, IN (8000 people) then a few days later in a small club in Celina, OH (probably 300 people) they played with the same intesity each time.Really a class act. Last November (2008) I saw YES with the J. Andersons replacement (if you closed your eyes, it was hard to tell the difference from the original very rare) and Oliver Wakeman was also excellent.honestly, they were magnificent..but I would pay twice the price.....
When comparing Yes and Starcastle I can hear some sort of similarities in the instruments, but I consider the vocals totally different, and Yes has on overall a much rougher sound, WHICH I DON'T LIKE since if I want rough I'll listen to metal :D
I am freaking out! Ok ive not had internet in a few yrs. Im just now looking up old favorites and have NEVER even seen Starcastle...just my old album covers. You tube is so freakin cool! I think im calling in sick tomorrow. Love their harmonies, like Yes but NOT Yes.
I had to track Starcastle down from a snippet of this song I'd recorded off the radio back in the 70s. I didn't remember the band's name or the name of the album, but I loved this song. I finally got a new CD of this album, and I wish them well!
Had their first 2 albums and thought to put them on a cassette(TDK AD90-da best!) I was in the Navy later and my Division Officer heard my tape. He was flabergasted that anyone had heard of them(he said he saw them back as a youth in Indiana)he asked to borrow my tape and the low-life never returned it!Officer & a Gentleman my ass! At least I still had the LP. Bought the 'Fountains' CD but the debut is a little more scarce. Screw the Yes clone stigma. It's good upbeat prog...is that so bad?!?
Yes I have and they were stunning. The couple times in 2002 with Rick were especially good (Awaken, Southside of the Sky, etc,). The 2001 tour with the symphony was also special.
Thanks for the clip eyerock36, I always enjoyed StarCastle.
This is a recent performance. Have you seen Yes recently? Even as far back as 15 years ago, Yes started to suck live. Get their DVDs. Yes is positively geriatric. I'd rather see Starcastle than hear Roundabout again live! Alot of Yes' music is "positively" boring.
Dont say that, its not their fault they are like in their 180's, it must be difficult to be fair if you are that old and try and move about on stage, and they do, especially chris Squire he moves a fair amount. Steve howe does these really funny faces which make me piss myself but at least he is trying, come on give them some credit xxxxxxx
I saw them in Phoenix three or four years ago and they were incredible! And I saw them several times in the seventies. A SLIGHT drop off in musicianship, but the SOUND now is so much better!
No Mistake i saw en in 75 backing Rush Their little lp was pretty good. Even in Gernay
Compared to Yes? Well, fucking no way. Yes were way far away a better bamd/ We're talkin a reject singer from REO Speedwagen but he did well in front of 30 folk 20 years ago.
I hail from that area of Southern Illinois...and I remember hearing Starcastle on KSHE FM....any OTHER recordings of THIS tune that you know of here on You Tube?
Once I worked in Champaign, Il. Home of the best pussy money can't buy. I Met Terry Luttrel There at the Der Weiner Schnietzel Hot dog joint over by the Round Barn. Terry , Of course sang for REO, From the U of I. Sang for Star Castle and Still owes Loyd Dees $20.00.
This is one of my favorite bands ever. I'm lucky I actually found an lp of their debut album! Their debut album is so awesome! I like most of the songs from it. "Lady Of The Lake" is from their debut album, and I love it. I like their song "Sunfield". The vocalist Terry Luttrell at the time was a great vocalist on that album. I think they are very underrated progressive rock band, but their music to me is really great and gives a good mood to their music. Something like Pink Floyd.

Ive never been much of a fan of YES. If you cant tap your foot to music it ceases to BE music, which was the case with a lot of Yes stuff. AS for this band, I have heard them over the years and thought they were very good, but this video would have been better left in the closet it sounds horrible.
Sucker, don`t fuck with Yes, this is Starcastle with the son of Rick Wakeman, Yes keyboardplayer and one of the best there was and is. By the way, next year Yes celebrates theyre 40 years anniversary, and they will tour again ! Go and watch those dudes guy, then you can make up your mind. And please do not exchange Yes with Starcastle any more.. You can`t compare an Ferrari with a Lada.
If YES could just duplicate what you hear on record in a live performance they wouldn't be so hard to stomach in a live setting. But alas, as with so many rock bands that depend on special effects not available on stage, their performances always leave something to be desired. So its back to Bluegrass for me...At least they CAN duplicate their recorded sound on stage... IMO the true measure of musicianship.
Chris Squire uses a Rickenbacker bass guitar with round wound strings. Since he is so integral to the sound of the band, and that bass lacks much "bottom", their sound live tends to lack "bottom". You can NOT judge musicianship based upon live sound vs. recorded sound. The difference you hear is the value of production, which itself is a very valuable and separate skill. Please don't confuse people with your distorted understanding.
I know what you mean about the sound not being that great, but considering I took the video on a $150 digital camera, I don't think it was too bad at all! And don't forget that one of the reasons for posting videos like this is to let the band's fans know that the band's not dead yet, they're still alive and kicking!
Just to clarify things...there are two annual progressive rock festivals in Pennsylvania: NEAR (North East Art Rock) fest (held in Bethlehem), and ROS (Rites of Spring) fest (formerly held near Valley Forge, now being held in Glenside.) Magma and Hawkwind played at Nearfest this past summer, while Starcastle played at Rosfest this past spring. I saw Magma at Nearfest when they had played there in June of 2003. I still have this on vinyl and I was always impressed by their sound. The vocals sounded very much like Yes but they had their own distinct sound. Wish I could have seen them live. Anybody have any more footage out there?
Indeed, Starcasle sounded like Yes, but those of us who enjoy Prog liked having them around (along with Styx, Kansas and Rush)in the Midwest, U.S. back in the day! ^__^
Great and talented band. For anyone that was around back in the day, you know they filled a huge void as Yes was really out of the picture when they first appeared. Saw them open for Utopia in 76. Great show.
After a couple of listenings you notice that they are originals. Yes is the "Non plus ultra" for all of us but these guys have their own sound and style. IMO, their playing and harmonies are much more clear and controlled than Yes. Yes is Yes any way.
Jon Anderson is the most beautifull voice on earth, this man is unique, there is no copy of his voice, starcastle is good band trying to sound like the most important band from de 70,80,80,90 and 2000 and this band is YES.
It's very obvious that StarCastle is heavily influenced, let's make that totally influenced by YES, and tries to copy their sound. But that's an awesome band to imitate! And "Lady of the Lake" is an excellent prog song with great ideas. But their vocals and musicianship were far from the mastery of YES. Jon Anderson had much more emotion in his vocals.
I saw them open for Gary Wright back in the 70s. back they they threw little flashlights out into the crowd. I see that they are still interested in lighting up the audience.
I had Fountains of Light back in high school. Let's just say they were very "inspired" by Yes - which is great.
But better than Yes? Let's just say I don't know what happened to my "Fountains" lp or the ones from Flash. And I don't care. But I have 6 Yes cds and play them often. But hey to each his own. Nothing wrong with the Castle.
Dude they are a Yes rip off. Just because you fail to hear it doesn't make it untrue. It's a general consensus. Almost every article brings it up. That wouldn't be happening if they weren't ripping off the sound. Zeppelin is a bad example for bringing up when it comes to any reference to cover bands. They ripped off more songs blatantly than any rock band ever. Zeppelin is the ultimate copy band.
That doesn't necessarily signify derivation. For instance, Rush started as a Led Zeppelin cover band, but their original material is very much their own. I challenge you to find so much as one Starcastle song that has a clear derivation from a Yes piece!
The only thing I've found with even the most basic similarity is "Stargate," which sounds something like Stravinsky's "Firebird" finale, which Yes used to play at concerts. That's it.
Well Matt has a lot to be proud of. I was in a YES tribute band for 5 years and understand how difficult it is to copy their sound. And Starcastle, although sounding similar to YES, was its own band with its own original material, some of it was really great, and much of Matt's guitar work was also really excellent.
I lived in Champaign-Urbana from 1972 to 2005. As of May 2005, he still lived there, still played guitar. I met him a few times.
