Your video has helped me a lot. For getting around what do you think is the best exercise for someone suffering sciatica; walking or riding a bicycle? Thanks.
@Hertsman50 Great! Glad you found exercises that are working for you. Not every stretch will work for every person - the body is not a machine like a car, so figuring out what's causing your problems is a bit of an art.
@shanna1950 Hi Shanna, if you're in SERIOUS sciatic nerve pain, you might be slightly beyond this stretch. Try sitting in a chair with a flat, firm seat, cross one ankle over your knee and gently use your hands to press the bent knee toward the floor. Keep your spine straight. This is an alternative that will stretch the same muscles. You might also be at the point of needing professional help - bodywork, chiropractic, etc.
@SukieBaxterWellnes - Hi There, nice of you to get in touch. But I learnt 2 simple exercises from my physiotherapist that really work with the sciatica and bring instant relief.

I woke up the other morning with serious sciatica pain. I quickly went on YouTube and found your video..I literally was better as soon as I was done stretching. I don't exercise regularly so my hand was under my knee (thanks for that alternative) but I was able to go about my day pain free! Had to do it again this morning and again, worked like magic! Thank you so much!!!
Awesome stretch. Just getting the foot over the thigh was a stretch for me. I have some major tension to loosen up I found out from your video... Thanks Sukie :)
Yes! I hope it doesn't come to surgery!!!! I had it real bad about 8 years ago! Disc went ping! Hip dropped one side! & my pelvis went walkabouts! Went way off the pain scale! Would rather of had toothache!! Anyways, thanks for replying to my post. I've got 2 weeks sick, off work! If i went back tomorrow! i could end up having 6 months off again! That would be 3 times then.My hip has dropped a little bit the one side! But tablets! Yuck! & physio acupuncture, will sort that out! Once again, tha
HI Sukie, I just started seriously stretching and I do hamstring quads shin and hip flexor . I thought I had the basics down for lower body but then I found this video and I tried it tonight and I was very tight . So I am excited to work on this. I feel better than ever playing tennis with my new flexibility. Have a good week and thanks.
Mmm!?! Sukie, I'm having Acupuncture & Physiotherapy! Had some today! Disc problem!...... Again!! 3rd time lucky! I'm already doing exercises! I've done this exercise before, but I can't do it at the moment! Got to be careful! Flipping disc again!! Surgery?! Last resort! & in the UK!, only if you have pee! pee! problems! Then it's an emergency! Got pain now! had worse! Good to see people like you, helping others! Lol
@sakis1011 hypertonic lateral rotators, i.e. tight muscles in the back of your hip. Try child's pose from yoga to gently lengthen your lower back and progress from there.
How long do I do this exercise before I switching to the other side. Right now I'm suffering from sciatic pain as I speak. I have very little strength in my Rt leg and foot hopefully this will help:)
@droopyru1 Hold the stretch for 15-30 seconds, more if you can. Relax into it and use your breath to release tension (breathe deeply, relax each time you exhale)
@foropera If you have a meniscus tear, you may need surgery to repair it. Consult a physician. If it is not torn, stretching your quads/hip flexors may be more appropriate and helpful for you.
@SukieBaxterWellnes You should never grab your knee and hold...this tends to irritate your knee and cuts of some circulation. Always grab behind your thigh, it may seen a bit uncomfortable at first but should be done as so. This is indeed a great exercise though!
This stretch helped me tremendously within a day of doing it. Not one of the five doctors I saw suggested exercise at all; in fact, I was told not toexercise till the pain went away, and also to undergo an expensive MRI and prepare for surgery! The frauds! Thank you Suzie and all the great girls and guys who upload the videos which prove of such great help to desperate people. Once again, thanks a lot Suzie!
wow, doing this for the first time is both painful and feels so good! Im sure the more often u do this, it gets better and better. It was only painful for me the first few minutes then I could do this all day..lol.
@Sperry411 Yayyy! Yes, it gets easier the more you do it, as do all stretches and physical exercises. If you are very tight, you can take deep breaths and mentally relax the muscles in your hips - let go of tension as you release your breath. That often helps.

the FIRST thing you have to explain, is HOW you will get on the floor with a full blown sciatica. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.

I think we would get a better idea of how the stretch works if you did it in a thong.

I have tried this stretch before and it costs excruciating pain. Is this normal? It hurts so much to even continue.
