  • This song reminds me of a girl I knew away back when I was in 5th grade. We find out the reason she had not attended school in two months was because she had no shoes. Her parents somehow managed to scrape up enough money for tobacco and beer, but were "too poor" to get their daughter a pair of shoes.Presumably she had kids of her own, and I can only pray she did not repeat the mistakes her parents made with her. May God have mercy on them.

  • @pmkemt34 I am also named after this song and I know of no one else with it either except you now. I have learned to love it over the years.

  • This was one of my grandma's favorite songs. She passed away yesterday. I love you grandma 3

  • My grandpa and dad play this on the guitar and sing it all the time! I love it!

  • Wunderschöne stimme -spitze-danke.LG.

  • Kinda cheesy, but I still love it!

  • my mom used to sing to me when i was a little girl. and what no one gets is that this song is in a time where u dont go against ur parents and it not like he can sneak out and see her. his parents r watching the door.

    .

  • Ohhhh buena rolla =)

  • I'd say fuck the parents and just run away with the girl (:

It's not up to them, and you have your own life.

  • I wouldn't have kill myself. I would have married her and moved to another country.Because, the parents die eventually. I would go with my heart. And i named my cat Patches. He is white with grey Patches over white. He is so sweet. I found him under my house as a kitten.

  • This song is so sad. It makes me cry.

  • Let's all put another record on and drink a cup of kindness for the good times ,the old times. Take care ADonovan43

  • As the drummer for the Y-4 band, I just had the honor of backing up Dickey Lee at the "Bunkhouse bar" outside of Cheyenne WY on Oct 15, 2010. He was in town to do a show and stopped by to see us. He sang "SHE THINKS I STILL CARE" and "NADINE". He still has a marvelous voice, and is a true Gentleman. The crowd loved him and went nuts!. I have always enjoyed your singing and song writing. This past Friday night will stand out as one of the most memorable nights of my career! Thanks again Dickey!

  • @JTsteelblu I grew up singing this song with my older sister,,she has now passed away and i still have to put it on occasionally to remember the good times,

  • if this happen th will never be a harmony world coz of society is divided.

  • I knew a girl from Texas named Peggy Salvon in 1957. Her parents were on the verge of divorce. This song makes me think of her. She and I were sweethearts for a while. I was ten years old. I have never forgotten her. God bless her and all of the forgotten who go by the name 'Patches'.

  • @john44122 GREAT POST,WE NEED OUR MEMORIES!!!!!1

  • Clarence Carter was a "Patches" too! Different scenario though....

  • I had originally thought that he had updated a song from the early 20th century, modernized it a little, but i googled it and turns out this song was written in 1962. it sounds like it could've taken place in the early 20th century though.

so beautiful and sad. makes me cry, that's how powerful it is. wish they still made music like this! where the heck has our country gone, if we have replaced beautiful music like this with rap and metal?

  • @deusregnat Society has changed greatly since this song was written, much to our discredit. What happened? I remember when this song came out

  • rein de vries - patsy, COPIERS!

  • I was a teenager when this song was popular. So romantic. Thanks for the memory.

  • I love this song it is so sad how he kills himself aww. Your first love is your first lose.

  • Great Song, it's one of my favorite of all time, also

    Laurie & Don't forget " Tell Laura I Love Her " by

Ray Peterson who will be missed.

    Robert

  • @robertrv8 You can also add Poor Side Of Town ( J. Rivers)

  • This song is morbid but SO romantic:) I love it a lot. The first time I heard it I was crying at the end--and I was a guy in my 20s!

  • I have to admit that I adopted this song when I first heard it, I was young and I grew up poor.

I was in love with a guy that I would never have been good enough for because his family had money so I nicknamed my self Patches and that is what everyone knows me as. It has been over 30 years but I still go by Patches and love this song.

  • I have always loved this song and I have never forgotten it!! I do cat life saving and rescue and a feral cat I am fostering we named "Patches". Her story of survival is amazing and gripping and has been published. It has been read in, at least, 3 countries. It is on the web at "Lexington Green Homeless & Feral Cat Life Squad".

  • Yes, it was/is one of the tragic love songs from the sixties, and probably one of the most beautiful.

Don't forget "Dead Man's Curve" by Jan and Dean.

    Joseph F

  • I have this song on his Smash label, don't know how many times I played it on my record player, such a sad song but what a classic, I love listening to it.

  • I saw Dickey Lee last weekend in Germany on the occasion of a 30 year anniversary of company Stein. He did a great show, as usual, good looking and still bringing out a great voice. Everybody loved it.

  • Great. Thanks for this you tube movie

  • I loved Dicky Lee and his sad sogs in the 1960's. I named a Calico Cat Patches after this song in 1966.

  • This was one of the great "death songs" of the 1960s. I think it began with "Teen Angel" and may have ended with "Leader of the Pack." Anyway, those were three of the great ones.

  • What a great song. When I was in the Army during the 60s, I used to disc jockey (The Loner) on my time off and this song was always played during a session. You don't hear songs that tell a story anymore.

    The Loner

  • I had been searching for this song high and low for 10 years, so glad finally got it here

  • Poor Patches! Was it an accident, or suicide?

  • it was a suicide. his parents said that Patches wasnt good enough for him. so he didnt go see her and she killed herself cause she thought he didnt love her anymore. then he found out about the suicide and at the end of the song he decided to kill himself to be with her! so sad! : (

  • Here's a challenge and I hope this can be done before I die of old freakin' age. Somebody....Post a good copy of Dickey Lee "I Go Lonely".

  • I am so glad I found this on utube. A ter jerker champion.

    JF

  • I"ve only listened to this song a few times over the years but it still breaks my heart to hear it but I"m glad it is still played, thanks for posting it.

  • You believe it.

  • my grandma used to sing me this song when i was really little!!

  • I used to listen to this with my mum, when i was a child. Now shes passed on this has tears streaming down my face.

Thanks for putting this on here.

  • my mom just showed me this song and it's great. but of course it makes me stand out because of this generation it's so outdated.

  • This is a great song, I remember hearing it as I was growing up, it brings back a lot of memories. Unfortunately it doesn't get hardly play time around here, thanks for posting.

  • Always liked this song! Thanks

  • Dose anyone know what this song is about I would like to think there are a few ppl who do it's a great song one of his best I love this song my grandpa usto sing this song all the time such a sad song isnt it?

  • yes, it is sad. This and others such as 'Down in the Boondocks,' were love, rich vs poor. Actually there was a pretty good opposition back then about dating 'outside' your kind.

  • Does anyone have Rocky?

  • Classic "Tear Jerker!" Thanks!!!!

  • Love it!

  • one of my favorite songs~ a great song from the 60s
