The reason it needs to be a federal statute is reciprocity. If a couple gets married in a state that recognizes equal marriage & then moves to or visits a state that doesn't, it will cause all kinds of problems. I have friends that are married in California, but obviously, it is not recognized in Texas - yet. So, even though their 'marriage' is recognized in several states now, they still must spend a fortune in legal fees to be protected (& it still isn't as powerful as that marriage license)

I'm personally very disappointed by Obama's stance on gay marriage. Obama was and is symbolic of huge change in America, yet gays are still be treated as 'less than.' Sure, civil unions are great; but they're not marriage. They're not equal to marriage. Why is it so hard to offer marriage to gay people? If you believe that gays should be equal to straight people, then what's wrong with granting gays the right to marry? The whole situation pisses me off. It makes me glad I live in Canada.

In 2006 around 12000 same sex marriages occurred. So roughly 24000 gay people got married out of a 32M population. Do the maths, it's 0.075% not even 1%. Obama, I think, will legalize same-sex marriage in the next four years because its about equality. Obama understands this: he taught constitutional law at the UC and he was a civil rights lawyer.
