  • wheres Zeppelin?

  • nicely done, one of my favourite pieces from Precence

  • great

  • Bring back Zep's Achilles last stand.

  • same.. i think hector in troy was way more respectable, had more pride and he was almost like the main character..

  • I was after a Led Zep song :-(

  • I love the Iliad it is such a great story, but i don't like how in Troy the movie they over humanified Achilles and over heroified Hector. I mean I was so looking forward to Hector running away from Achilles before Athena comes to him. Also why was Patroclus so much younger then Achilles?

  • They need to make the iliad a series, do each book an episode. Live action, and true to every word and hymm. No more of this modern day BSing of classical myths. I want to see what i see when i read on the screen/TV

  • The stereotype of Greeks being homosexuals comes from the translations of Greek to Latin. The Roman translators thought it would be more intriguing to introduce these element to their readers. For the same reason scandals and gossip sell so much today. Later scholars found it easier for them to translate, Latin to English than Greek to English. So this misconception spread even more. If you read from the prototype, or a translation directly from Greek there is no such thing in there.

  • Homosexuality was practiced only by certain lobbies in secrecy. That was because it was illegal, and anyone who was caught having sex with another man was deprived of his rights as a citizen and shamed his family. Something that reduced him to nothing. Aesop says that when the gods gave man his characteristics they placed shame on his anus; for a reason. Homosexuals did of course exist. But in no more than those limited there are today everywhere. Otherwise they would become extinct.

  • Patroclus was Achillies Cousin

  • no he was not

that is just what the movie said

  • Some scholars say that Patroclus was Achilles' lover. Those of you who know more about ancient Greek culture maybe you can shed some light into this. Did the ancient Greeks really practiced homosexuality? Was it considered normal? Maybe only some ancient Greeks were homosexuals just like today in the modern times however, gays and lesbians today are quick to generalized that the Ancient Greeks are homosexuals. Maybe historians or scholars mistook best friends for lovers.

  • If they were gay, Homer would have said so. It was normal back in the day (only a small part of population probably did it, because it's natural to like opposite sex not same) but since it would have been integral to the story, Homer would have mentioned it at least once, so that we know their bond is even stronger than shown.

  • all i know that in athens it was legal.

but if u were homosexual according to the law u didnt had the right to speak in the council.

so it would be difficult that the main and famus ones were homo.

about achilles i think it was not true since he was in love with one of agamemnons slave(woman) and agamemnon promised he would give her to him if achilles recognised him as the leader of the greeks

  • to answer your first question no, Achilles and Patroclus were best friends (he was unofficially adopted into the house of Achilles father so they were more like brothers). there are modernized myths of Greeks and homosexuality but in truth there is no proof. What leads people to believe that greeks were homosexual were the Athenians.

  • actually, Achilles and Patroclus were best friends. Achilles' father had unofficially adopted Patroclus into his family when Patroclus' father was killed. If anything, they are more like adopted brothers

  • I think that it is how you said. Friendship among males was likely very close, since women were often not free to be out in society. You see this in the Muslim world today where men have very close friendships, while women are not free to be out in society as much. There are some accounts of men taking boy lovers pederasty, but even those are somewhat limited, and from my readings, tend to be somewhat shameful. For example, no great hero ever has a boy lover, but scandalizers and those sorts do

  • Unfortunately, this is one of those cases where the adage "Lost in translation" fits like a glove. The ancient greek text reads that Patroclus was Achiles's "Ερωμένος" Eromenos. The use of this word in ancient Greek meant protege or pupil. It was a practice widely used, something like a mentor nowadays you could say. Ask someone who knows ancient Greek and etymology. The word in modern Greek is used as lover, but not in the ancient language.

    Cheers

  • @striveandreceive spartans in particular would have sex most often with other men, returning at night to have sex with women. academics agree that the sex with women was more of a duty to procreate more than anything else. these ideas about sexuality seem very foreign to us indeed, and in the odyssey, the idea is not really considered at all, Odysseus has longing for penelope and lust for women only. as much as i would like to consider achilles as "straight" like Odysseus, its not accurate

  • @magua4 ignorant answer sry. no proper proof of achilles being homosexual or many other assumed ancient greeks

  • Even though Patroclus was not the cousin of Achilles and was not younger still he was a person that Achilles did look after and he did wear Achilles Armor in the battlefield and was indeed killed by Hector, As Achilles killed Hector it may not show how long he dragged him but you can assume he did drag his body on the chariot for 9 days, Priams son Paris did sleep with Helen and did take her to Troy which started the whole war, Brises was really Achilles's slave girl and was taken by agamemnon

  • Patroclus was Achilles's lover.

  • Wrong...That missunderstanding comes from bad translation of ancient Greek..and as everything else lies spread especially fast in western world.

  • in the original games at dusk women in the closing ceremonies for the day would turn to the sun and "weep for Achilles"/pay homage. The Hellenes (don't say Greek - they collect unemployment and flip cars over) were a hero-worshipping culture.

  • can you clarify the:''don't say greeks...unemployment and flip cars over part'' a little bit?I happen to be a greek and I find it rather insulting...

  • Greeks and Hellenes are old names for the same people. The real name of my people are Hellenes and this name means that the people of the Gods' land. The Romans gived to us the second name whish means that the flood victims because we are survivors of the old deluges.Greacus(Latin word)=Greeks,Greece. The rest comment shows that you don't know nothing about Greeks.Where are you from? Are you Canadian or something else.....

  • all those atemps of altering history should be stoped. lots of people have seen the film Troy and think that they know what happened. they should not base their knowledge upon a holywood production.

  • LOL Viper they don't even know if Troy was real the first history we have of it is based on a Greek "Holly Wood" bard song. Homer was a Bard as much as a historian and he was born over 200 years later. In fact he learned about it thruogh the oral tradition of singing history. He was just the most famous bard of his time.

  • Actually the found the city of Troy burned, so it was real. The debate comes in when they try to figure out who burnt troy. Many historians figure it was the Higlacs to the East. No Greek armour has been found. So the story of Achilles and the Greeks at troy is debated. But the exisistance if Troy , plus the fact that it was burned, has been proven. They had to go down 9 layers to find the city though.

  • German Heinric schlieman Archaeologist found the archaeological site of Troy. Troy is real and so was Helene of Troy being the reason for the war.

  • don't post ignorant comments unless you read/get some clues first....they've actually found the ancient city of troy exactly where Homer located it and have identified many places/landmarks,exaclty how he'd described them in his poems...

  • too true........

  • But I've read about it on the history and encyclopedia and documentry and based on the events on the hollywood movie it did follow the events that occured in real life other than the make believe gods they have in homers story Achilles did have beef with king agamemnon, Achilles did kill Hector, King Priam of Troy was killed in his temple during the invasion of troy although no on know's if it was king agamemnon who killed him it's assumed that history did come close to it.

  • It was Achilles son who killed Priam. Agamemnon didnt do it, and neither was he killed at Troy, he went home to Mycaene and was killed by his wife and her lover.

  • I didnt have the chance to see this video with led zep music but hey nice addition, i like renaissance music too!!!

  • the "magic flute "is from 1791, from the "Classicism" , much latter than renaissance.(200 years at least)

  • This song is epic

  • it was said that Achilles Last Stand was influenced by Robert Plant's broken ankle in Greece :) ironic

  • how is that ironic?

  • Achilles had only one weak spot which was his ankle

  • if led zepplin was a religion would you join? thumbs up for yes.

  • The drums of this song inspired lots of metal bands....

In my opinion,it is their headmaster.

  • one of my favorite songs.. and for me the best of zeppelin!

  • I love this song as well : )

  • definitely top 5 in the greatest zeppelin songs.

  • lovely song, nice video presentation as well.

this song goes right along with the pictures

    nice work man

  • Thank you Danny, glad to see that you like the ensemble I pieced together. It was a great pleasure to work with such an awesome tune. Led Zeppelin Rules Man!!! : )

    Enjoy the trip mate!

  • it's eerie how, in retrospect, this song comes off as a eulogy for the band.

  • Very good!! my compliments

  • Thank you Antonio,

Happy to see that you and many other viewers like the video presentation.

    Trifon

  • Very kewl interpratation* with moving still pic slide show to this tune. ty*****

  • Nobody in the world is stronger then Achilles!!!

  • cept Hector lol

Achilles was said to have speed on Hector

  • i hit my heel against the staricase really really hard shit man it really hurts u just loose ur balance i wonder who achilles would of felt with an arrow.

  • GOOD POST

  • the drumming in this song is unparalleled

  • nobody's fault but mine's drumming is quite better, but still this song has amazing drumming yeahhh

  • amazing song, amazing time period(era)

  • omg isnt da book the iliad da best eva!!!

    so good!!!

  • Achilles nick was "the fastest"

  • yes

  • Achilles Last Stand has to be my favourite Led Zeppelin tune... Nice to see others interested in it as well. :-)

    Sam

  • Beautiful.

I just finished the book for the first time and I have always loved this song.

  • An excellent piece of work...

  • This song still gives me the chills. Presence...great album all the way around. God, did I just say "album?" How old AM I??? Haha.

  • i say album all the time and im 13. best era of music except for perhaps the classical era, its understandable to not want to leave it :)

  • presence was absolutely the most underrated zeppelin album. some really great gems on this disc

  • This is a really good idea! Nice work.

  • Heros and Gods...

    Achilles, Zeus, Ajax, Hector...

    Page, Plant, Jones, Bonham...

  • Totally.

  • you forgot alexander the great.

  • that is very true.

  • a hero perhaps, but he wasn't in the Illiad

  • It was the Odyssey that Achilles wasn't in. Achilles was one of the heros in the Iliad. But I'm not sure having doodles calling you a dumbass really helps correct the mistake.

  • achilles died in the illiad,

he was when the illiad ended and the odyssey began after achilles death which involved the troy siege and archimedes (mistake me if im wrong) trip home to his kingdom in greece

    i love greek mythology :D

  • Funnily enough, the main character in the Odyssey was ........ Odysseus. Archimedes wasn't a mythological character but an acctuall person who invented many things, most notable siege works, the first water pump and a mirror system which could alledgedly light ships on fire.

  • Achilles dosnt die in the Iliad, the end of the Iliad is Hectors funeral. We dont get a first hand account of what happend in the siege of troy in either the Iliad, the odyssey or the aeneid.

  • Achilles didn't die in the Iliad.

  • very awesome

  • Man you put a very good pictures, indeed excellent!

  • This is the definition of epic, mates! It comes second only to "Kashmir". "Stairway to Heaven" is neat, but this is one memorable roller-coaster ride.

  • seriously wonderful!

  • Lovely!

  • WELL THIS IS RIPPIN' "OUTRAGEOUS'! Mssrs. PAGE,PLANT J.P.JONES,(J.BONHAM/as of late..R.I.P), Mr.BONHAMs'SonNEEDLY/SHOULD APPRECIATE SUCH Fine CLASSISISTIC Illustration to Accompany their "EPIC" Hard-MetalRock Tretise!!Its' ALWAYS"REFRESHING "to See the Arts Combine to Compliment each other For HUMANKIND to VIEW! It Enriches the Culture So MUCH !!

  • Absolutely Fantastic!

  • Hey, your video is AWESOME. I was wondering...whats the title of this Led Zeppellin song? I'm studying the Iliad in school right now. Your response would be greatly appreciated! :D

  • The song is "Achilles Last Stand", as listed by the title of the video. Its one of my personal favorites, once used it in a History class for a project lol.

  • Achilles Last Stand

P.S. there are lots of different dipictions of the illiad so becareful of what you study

  • brilliant

  • I love the Illad and I love Led Zeppelin

  • great job mate

  • nice job mate

  • Thank you!!! Cheers mate!!!

  • i like this.. for some reason the music fits well with the visuals.. i like those pans across the pictures, its called the "ken burns effect" did you know that? :D

  • The reason that the pictures fit well Angelati is that this odyssey took me about twenty years to gather the right material and assemble it to flow with the music.

Thank you for the heads up on Ken Burns and his effect. I did not know that, so I used the "Trifon Haitas effect" did you know that one? ; p

  • This is most wonderful, for this Zeppelin song...

    Peace

  • Great video with a great song.

  • Very well done. Thats all I'm gonna say cuz I can really describe how great that was. Thanks.

  • Great job, this video rocks!

  • The movie Troy should have featured this song.

  • I agree, this song would have made the movie that much better to watch. Hollywood does not have the talent to come up with such great ideas Yako. If they did, maybe more people would go out to see their movies!!

  • And maybe someday they'll stop doing stupid remakes or silly TV spin-offs.

  • Masterpiece

  • best led zep son ever!!!

  • pretty cool. this is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs of all time

  • I love the larger than life, overly dramatic themes in Led Zep music!

  • Except Led Zeppelin do it excellently, and in a way that stirs real emotion, unlike, say, Iron Maiden, who just inspire pure corn on a stick. This is a great song - compare with "Alexander the Great" by Maiden.

  • Hard to compare the 2 of them.

I like both Zeppelin and Maiden

  • I like both, Alexander The Great by Iron Maiden is so great as Achilles' Last Stand by Led Zeppelin, I see both songs as a epic masterpieces for rock

  • excellent, i love it! that'S exactly what comes in my mind to when i hear this song
