@muskypucker As I pointed out above, it could be written in 4/4, 6/8 or 3/4. Writing it in 12/8 (Which is two measures of 6/8 combined) means you don't have to use triplets anymore and can use plain on eighths and quarters and dotted quarters. We've wandered a little. Point is, the song's not 3/5. Want a weird time signatured pop song by Genesis look up Turn it On Again which is mostly in 13/4. I don't mean to sound a snob (I'm sure I'm failing) but you need to work on your music vocabulary.
@muskypucker that's not how time signatures work. A bar is just another name for a measure. 4/4 means that there are four beats in the measure. A full beat is a quarter note. 3/4 means there are 3 beats in the measure and a full beat is a quarter note. 3/5 would mean there are three beats in the measure and a full beat is a fifth note, which doesn't exist in standard western music notation. I think what you're looking for is 5/4 time, but it's not 5/4.
@orkinman911 Ignore the tune and listen to the drums. (Bass ts ts, snare ts ts, bass ts ts, snare ts ts, bass ts ts, snare ts ts, bass ts ts snare ts ts.) Count each group of 3. it takes 8 groups of three for the riff to start again. that's 24 notes, which is not in any way divisible by 5. There are several ways you could write this. I'd personally use 4/4, but you could use 6/8, 3/4 or a few others. Look up time signatures on wikipedia, if you like. Trust me, I'm a drummer (I can offer proof)
@muskypucker 3/5? It's 4/4 as far as I can tell, maybe 6/8. Anything/5 is almost nonexistent. You'd have to be looking at some seriously avant-garde music to run into that.
I don't know if it was intentional, but they ripped off Sly ad the Family Stone. Listen to Hot Fun in the Summertime. The bass lines are almost identical.
@ThatGuyTooHigh - LOL I agree. Love this song; almost addictive. But that main part IS damn near identical to "Hot Fun..". Both good, nonetheless.
And thanks for pointing out that shirt; never thought it. Maybe Phil, too, was on the phone with Omar Suarez...tryna clear up a "misunderstanding" about the yayo! : -)
-Must be some Misunderstanding, must be some kind of Mistake.. Waited in the rain for hours, you were late.. I guess you don't get the hint!! Still great song, for the people that got stood up..
Phil Collins is one of those artists who has had so many hits that you wouldn't know them all until they were all played for you. Then you'd go "Oh yeah, I forgot he did this song."
Buy the Genesis turn it on again: the hits it has all the great songs even this one I got it about a month ageo and it's great im only 15 and I really can appreacte this kind of music =)>
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent.
This song is supposed to leave you with an empty, forgotten and left out feeling........but for some reason this song makes me feel strong and inspired. Genesis songs always do that to me.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the theme and main riff were lifted from " Fool in the rain" from "In thru the out door" listen and if your a musician you'll know. still love this whole album from genesis they avoided their masturbatory over playing that was the hallmark of their earlier stuff.
It wasn't "Fool In the Rain" that inspired the music to this track. Phil Collins has repeatedly stated in interviews (one of which is on the In the Studio for Abacab which I have up) that "Misunderstanding" was musically influenced by "Sail On Sailor" by The Beach Boys, "Hold the Line" by Toto and "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh, the shuffling rock beat in 12/4. Also you can hear a bit of "Hot Fun in the Summertime" by Sly and the Family Stone in the riff (Phil is a huge R&B and soul fan).
your gonna complain about people ripping off led zeppelin, when everyone who knows and loves zeppelin knows that they ripped of several people with no credit, not to say i don't love them but still, its silly to get condescending about someone doing it when they did it all the time
Hmmmm..... there's a difference between inspiration and out right stealing. Go back and look at the evidence. I don't have the time nor patience for it, but its there. Trust me!!!
Relax! There are only so many chord progressions. How many thousands of rock songs use I-IV-V? Endless jazz and pop standards use I-vi-ii-V. "Recomposing" is a term of art, wherein a known chord sequence is rewritten with a new melody and lyrics. Probably 250 Bob Dylan songs use the same chords, many with the same melody. So who cares?
i know you can't copywrite chord progressions however as much as i love them zeppelin stole lyrics as well look at the comment i made, whole lotta love was stolen and they had to change the credits to include willie dixon after they were sued. i have an orignal pressing and dixon is not on there
i know my research, zeppelin directly stole lyrics from willie dixon on whole lotta love, and i know you are gonna say dixon is credited on the album but not on the original pressing and not until they were sued. i love zeppelin but "I ain't foolin' you need schoolin'
Baby you know you need coolin'
Baby, way down inside, woman you need love " along with others are from you need love written by willie dixon
BTW - you can't copyright a chord progression. You CAN copyright the melody and lyrics. If a chord prog could be copyrighted, only one blues song would exist!
