  • 16 people are having a misunderstanding

  • I love Genesis! I hear them on the Classic Rock Station all the time.

  • @muskypucker As I pointed out above, it could be written in 4/4, 6/8 or 3/4. Writing it in 12/8 (Which is two measures of 6/8 combined) means you don't have to use triplets anymore and can use plain on eighths and quarters and dotted quarters. We've wandered a little. Point is, the song's not 3/5. Want a weird time signatured pop song by Genesis look up Turn it On Again which is mostly in 13/4. I don't mean to sound a snob (I'm sure I'm failing) but you need to work on your music vocabulary.

  • @muskypucker that's not how time signatures work. A bar is just another name for a measure. 4/4 means that there are four beats in the measure. A full beat is a quarter note. 3/4 means there are 3 beats in the measure and a full beat is a quarter note. 3/5 would mean there are three beats in the measure and a full beat is a fifth note, which doesn't exist in standard western music notation. I think what you're looking for is 5/4 time, but it's not 5/4.

  • @orkinman911 Ignore the tune and listen to the drums. (Bass ts ts, snare ts ts, bass ts ts, snare ts ts, bass ts ts, snare ts ts, bass ts ts snare ts ts.) Count each group of 3. it takes 8 groups of three for the riff to start again. that's 24 notes, which is not in any way divisible by 5. There are several ways you could write this. I'd personally use 4/4, but you could use 6/8, 3/4 or a few others. Look up time signatures on wikipedia, if you like. Trust me, I'm a drummer (I can offer proof)

  • @muskypucker 3/5? It's 4/4 as far as I can tell, maybe 6/8. Anything/5 is almost nonexistent. You'd have to be looking at some seriously avant-garde music to run into that.

  • I don't know if it was intentional, but they ripped off Sly ad the Family Stone. Listen to Hot Fun in the Summertime. The bass lines are almost identical.

  • 15 ppl misunderstood the dislike/like buttons.

  • This one's for MBJ.

  • Just to good along with the song Oh little Genie.

  • wow they stole the riff directly from sly and hot fun in the summertime....that's kinda wack. But I do love Phil's Scarface shirt lol

  • @ThatGuyTooHigh - LOL I agree. Love this song; almost addictive. But that main part IS damn near identical to "Hot Fun..". Both good, nonetheless.

And thanks for pointing out that shirt; never thought it. Maybe Phil, too, was on the phone with Omar Suarez...tryna clear up a "misunderstanding" about the yayo! : -)

    ~~Husky Noir~~

  • @muskypucker Why 3/5? i give it a 5/5

  • Bad ass song reminds me of my dad driving me to basball games in the 80's. Man how time flies.

  • Sooooooooooo good.

  • my favorite genesis song, i think

  • Phil Collins looks good with a beard, grow it back Phil.

  • I like Gabriel more than Collins - Steve over Darryl - blue more than red... Whatever !!! You are still watching this video so just appreciate it...

  • I'm thinking they stole this riff from Sly & The Family Stone "Hot Fun In The Summertime"

  • @demrayhalen yes they did

  • Hit #14 pop, #32 AC in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • "Misunderstanding"= HOARSE SHIT and THEN SOME!

  • -Must be some Misunderstanding, must be some kind of Mistake.. Waited in the rain for hours, you were late.. I guess you don't get the hint!! Still great song, for the people that got stood up..

  • Part of this video was filmed at the Centinela Drive-In. I miss that place.

  • I effing love Genesis! Much love and respect from Canada!

  • muito boa musica ,e fato que e musica de corno mas e muito boa!!

  • hi i am miss understanding....nice 2 meet ya

  • Why in the world would Phil show himself with a lit cigarette in 'Groovy kind of love'? He's too smart to take up smokin'!

  • Good, I love the harmonies and arrangement of this song.

  • Don, are you listening?

  • phil's voice is the voice of an angel

  • lol nick

  • its true mack, its true lol

  • I love this vid, he looks like forest gump when he was jogging cross country only he's wearing Quagmire's shirt. Classic

  • Phil Collins is one of those artists who has had so many hits that you wouldn't know them all until they were all played for you. Then you'd go "Oh yeah, I forgot he did this song."

  • love this song...always had a 50s feel!!

  • I love this song too! It's a classic, and I would kill to get the CD. I enjoy the tune.

  • Buy the Genesis turn it on again: the hits it has all the great songs even this one I got it about a month ageo and it's great im only 15 and I really can appreacte this kind of music =)>

  • Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent.

  • Haha. In the book, Patrick hates live music and snubs Bono at a U2 concert.

  • Patrick

  • @jeffstowers

Foxtrot, Selling England, and the Lamb are way better albums.

  • @jeffstowers lmao...whatever you say patrick bateman..

  • @jeffstowers lol. i just searched for this song after i read that passage in the book

  • This is vintage

  • I like this song

  • heh heh ... but somehow it doesn't LOOK like him?

  • It is Phil Collins, smart one.

  • have you ever hear of a typo you tard monkey?

  • What could you possibly have been intending to type that you fucked it up that badly?

NIce try. Thumbs up to you.

  • I loveee Phil Collins!!!!

  • Ah...I remember when Phil Collins was cool!

  • how come ive never of these guys but i have heard of this song lovin it:))

  • phil was going through a divorce

  • whooo oooo

  • I'm going through the whole genesis album catalog... duke is definitely a gem ;)

  • one of the best songs of all time-seriously-so amazingly awsome

  • This song is supposed to leave you with an empty, forgotten and left out feeling........but for some reason this song makes me feel strong and inspired. Genesis songs always do that to me.

  • It wasn't "Fool In the Rain" that inspired the music to this track. Phil Collins has repeatedly stated in interviews (one of which is on the In the Studio for Abacab which I have up) that "Misunderstanding" was musically influenced by "Sail On Sailor" by The Beach Boys, "Hold the Line" by Toto and "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh, the shuffling rock beat in 12/4. Also you can hear a bit of "Hot Fun in the Summertime" by Sly and the Family Stone in the riff (Phil is a huge R&B and soul fan).

  • hmmm, another song 'lifted' from a Led Zeppelin tune. You know, even if it were true, that is the biggest irony in the world....

Oh and by the way "Fool in the Rain,' is a real shitty song.

  • fool in the rain is a great song, your prick, just because it aint your jonas brothers shit lol

  • your gonna complain about people ripping off led zeppelin, when everyone who knows and loves zeppelin knows that they ripped of several people with no credit, not to say i don't love them but still, its silly to get condescending about someone doing it when they did it all the time

  • Hmmmm..... there's a difference between inspiration and out right stealing. Go back and look at the evidence. I don't have the time nor patience for it, but its there. Trust me!!!

  • Relax! There are only so many chord progressions. How many thousands of rock songs use I-IV-V? Endless jazz and pop standards use I-vi-ii-V. "Recomposing" is a term of art, wherein a known chord sequence is rewritten with a new melody and lyrics. Probably 250 Bob Dylan songs use the same chords, many with the same melody. So who cares?

  • i know you can't copywrite chord progressions however as much as i love them zeppelin stole lyrics as well look at the comment i made, whole lotta love was stolen and they had to change the credits to include willie dixon after they were sued. i have an orignal pressing and dixon is not on there

  • i know my research, zeppelin directly stole lyrics from willie dixon on whole lotta love, and i know you are gonna say dixon is credited on the album but not on the original pressing and not until they were sued. i love zeppelin but "I ain't foolin' you need schoolin'

Baby you know you need coolin'

Baby, way down inside, woman you need love " along with others are from you need love written by willie dixon

  • BTW - you can't copyright a chord progression. You CAN copyright the melody and lyrics. If a chord prog could be copyrighted, only one blues song would exist!

  • thats genuinely fascinating

  • yeah your right dude ..and there is a difference from total rip off and inspiration...great song great band...great album ...Phil is a great musician...

  • Great song!

  • This guy was not too off about a flu epidemic.

  • It's only loud if you are old!!!!

  • fa fa......foey!

  • This was back when Phil Collins wasn't way bald.

  • Brings back memories. Memories of stalking...

  • The best kind of memories.

  • Lol ruleoforder. You know what i just figured out about you? That you acually go around on different videos of different artist and say the same thing in every one. Because i remember you from other videos. How sad and pathetic your life must be to have to do this.

  • awesome video... u can see how Sunet Blvd used to look like... I love nostalgia!

  • Love this song...

    Work that falsetto! WOO-oo-oo

Those were the days...they're all gone now :(

  • This reminds me of when I first met you Susan

  • Phil colins with a beard what the fuck! He's cooler then i thought he was!

  • simply great!

  • I remember seeing Phil Collins in the early 80's in Vancouver. He brought his teenaged son on stage to play drums. Together they brought the house down.

  • Phil's tribute to mental illness

  • Today this song was playing at a store, and I was dancing around and lip-synching to it.

    Good times.

  • The 1980's were the best

  • I agree with you. Less complications, less drugs, less of everything, but more wonderful memories. The music was awesome back then. Life was so different. But I guess every genration says that.

  • From the album, "Duke", their first album to make #1! UK- 1980!

  • I know I asked this a couple of months ago but what is the make & model of the car Phil drives in this video?

  • A 1950s model Ford convertible.

  • One of my Fave songs to play along with!..Phil Rocks!..

  • I been listening to genesis song and it occurs to me that they must be kind of slow. He cant understand that she dont want him. In other songs, it is the same thing like in No Reply at All. But I love the music though.

  • He knows it but hes in denial.

  • Phil drives a 1954 Ford in this video - holybatshit!! Did anyone's parents have one of these? Genesis wasn't even heard in the USA in 1954 !

  • ive looked for this song for a while, i love it sooo much ! ;)

  • This song is too good not to have more than 100,000 views...Maybe saw the vid once or twice.Nonetheless, one of my all-time fave Genesis songs...

  • what is that car that phil is driving?

  • a car

  • funny ass response, thanks lol!

  • I sure do MISS the Los Angeles of 1980!

  • So do I.

  • Hey jimmi144, what do you miss the most?

  • Me to it was rock n roll 80s, now its gangster shit going on

it pisses me off, how gay styles and time got.

  • She was cheatin on him?

  • In the video yeah, I don't know about for real, but with his second wife it was him cheating on her

  • What is this song about?

  • great song!!!

  • Peter had left the band by this time yeah?

  • I'm not sure, but I think ,,Duke" was the second album after Peter left Genesis... Anyway, it's a nice song.

  • Dear Lord, yes. There would have been no 3 1/2 minute wailing ditties like this if Peter had still been with them. The message of the song may have been the same, but the lyrics would have been esoterically about Greek or Roman gods or have Biblical references, or described fantastical creatures. It would have been about 12 minutes long, with a lengthy instrumental mid-section utilizing Hackett's guitar and Tony's mellotron...... Ahhhhh....such wonders there could have been.........

  • Looks like a 1952 Ford. Great song btw.

  • What kind of car does Phil drive in this video?

  • First heard this song on my K Tel compilation Full Tilt!!! Ahh the good ole days!!

  • this is the song that got me into genesis

  • One of Phil Collins best imo, great song!

  • I noticed this song a week ago in the city. I just couldn't get it out of my mind and I'm so glad I found it now!! =)

    This song is just gorgous!!!

  • He took the main riff from "hot fun in the summertime" written by sly & the family stone which was released in 1969. He reworked the harmony on fool in the rain and long live misunderstanding. he actually did a good job with this though.

  • Interesting listening to this song after reading your comment. Good comment. Made me go listen to some old Led Zep stuff too, lol.

  • thanks, yea i love zep too and the family stone.

  • holy cow am I romanticizing this song :).

Great song in the non stop Phil Collins 80's hit parade.

  • Does anybody realize that this song in the video is played and sang in a slightly higher key signature than on the album Duke?

  • yeah, i noticed that.

  • i love this song so much!!!

  • denial, great song,

  • someone tell me when did this album come out cause that was the year I saw Genesis and the only time i saw them think it was '79 or '80. Still my favorite concert of all time!

  • In 'American Psycho', Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) refers to 'Duke' as their 1980 album.

  • That chick in the screen is fugly. Ruins the video.

  • this is my fave genesis song.ive got this song on the album duke.

  • tokin a DOOB>>> an laid back------Love this!!

  • great song great video thanx
