No one enjoys Tarkovsky more...trust me. Chances are if you like Kubrick, you ike Tarkovsky because they are simiar. There's no competition. Also and this is a fact...Tarkovsky hadn't even seen 2001 when he made Solaris. He saw it afterwards.
I love both equally and if you do some research you will see that Tarko coudn't afford to use special effects, heck he could only get one take! So all the scenes in the movie have been done on one take.
@rishi851 But yeah 2001 is a great great film too. Look at it this way....both are gems and worthy of the highest praise. Both showcase that science fiction can be intellectual and thought provoking. We are the winners eventually. They should release a 2001/Solaris combo bluray with all the extra supplements.
Also the soderberg version is great too but for very different reasons.
@rishi851 No, both are too good of films to be messed around with and converted to Bluray. 2001 just happens to be more intelligent. 2001's one of the only films I've seen that doesn't tell you the era in which it was conceived, if it's the first time you've seen it of course. The coloring and overall look is so unique that it's untouchable. It also is far more complex regarding visual symbolism and subtext. Both are great films, but one is obviously better than the other--and it came first.
For me the most stunning shot in space in any film is the one in Event Horizon of Sam Neill opening the shade on his window and then pulling out to show the entire, vast space station he's on, orbiting the earth, I know the film's a guilty pleasure at best but that shot is amazing on a big screen.
@kevinto1972 Yeah, Event Horizon could have been great, It is a good guilty pleasure but nothing more. I know the scene you refer to.....if I am not wrong it takes place right at the start. The ship orbiting Neptune ...long time I sa that one
This movie is pure epicness... Except for the very last scene. Not going to spoil stuff, but this version added somethign to the original story that completely breaks it.
The film was actually quite good in all respects. Leaves quite a few unanswered questions, good for a bit of mind tingling. Overall, a good adaptation of the huge novel by Stanislaw Lew, which I suggest reading, if you can find it.
This film version of Solaris has the poetry of the unknown in its sounds and visuals. I read the book, and others by Lem, far before watching any of the films and I am completely comvinced that Stanislaw Lem would have prefered Soderbergh's version. I connected to the book with ease and passion through this film. Tarkovsky's version on the other hand reminds of some messy communist toilet.
Thanks for the comment. I urge people to read the book.....It is amazing. I think the book is far better than either version because the subject is so rich. The one mistake both the directors did was that they made it about the human beings-a love story but Solaris is about mankind's place in the Cosmos, it is about the planet Solaris and it is Science fiction above all. Tarkovsky arrogantly said he wanted to rise about Sci-fi though I still love his film. I love both versions.
Nice scene but look at the End of Battlestar Galactica, the last fight, or at Stargate Universe when the Destiny do the first (with crew) refueling on a star !
I agree @rishi851, this is such an underrated film. The visuals, the music, the tragic love story... This film has haunted me since I saw it two years ago, and I haven't dared watch it again since.
Please, Tarkovsky fans, just relax. We have two very different films to enjoy, and it is possible to be blown away by both.
nice, thanks for this. NIce sound and picture. This was an awesome scene from a great movie. Solaris exits along side Tarkovsky's version in a complementary way.
Hey....I love Tarkovsky and consider him the greatest director ever(kubrick being a close second). I love the original solaris (solyaris) but this one is good too. Both are great for different reasons tho.
@rishi851 that's awesome you know the original, dude! kudos to you. new solaris is of course visually very good. but i watched the russian solaris at first and maybe that's why i like it more.
@rishi851 I love every moment of that movie. Must have watche it two dozen times,a dn each time its a different and more compelling experiece for me. Stanislaw Lem was a genius. Soderbegh showed the movie the way I felt the novel.
I love how you people always have to compare Tarkovsky to Kubrick, yet you don't even give reasons why. You clearly just enjoy Tarkovsky more. Kubrick was far more advanced than any filmmaker at that time, and Tarkovsky likely wouldn't have made Solaris if it weren't for 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is a MUCH better film. 2001 overall is more than just a film--it's a visual experience...that teaches you something every viewing of it...unless, of course, you're you.
Very well put. If I had to honestly point out what is the most romantic movie of the decade, I' d say Solaris, for I too would choose to live forever alongside the one I love, even if just in a dream, than to have to live the "real life" alone.

Solaris....Its a remake and both the films are based on a book. Its a slow atmospheric science fiction film. Very moody. DIR: Steven Soderberg.

the start of the film contact, which flies away from earth into the galaxy and out into the universe is usually considered the best.
