wow this tune is smokin! My favorite by Blanche! . No body else could do it better. Her big mistake was by dragging her little brother Cab along to her audition with the Cotton Club talent manager, Irving Mills. The story goes, when he met and said, hi Cab, who are you related to? and out of Cabs mouth came, Hi! de HO! Blanches problems just started....lol
You know, you can kinda tell she's Cab's sister by the tone of her voice! They both have that thick tone that sounds like butter, smooth with an edge, and a tendency to pronounce words dramatically with heavy emphasis on r's and w's! I can't fully describe it, but they just have this sound to they're voices that is unlike any others, really rich and thick, but without being too deep or velvety! Thx for the upload!
Blanche should have become a bigger star. She should have became what Ethel Waters, Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday became. To me Blanche was a little ahead of her time. She had a lot of soul and rhythm&blues in her voice and music. She was everything Cab Calloway was, in fact, she taught Cab a lot but at the time the biz was very discriminating against women who singed, danced, entertained, arranged, composed, and wrote music. Her and Valaida Snow are so unsung.
Hi Lou, According to Victors files matrix#64070-2 was the only issued take. It was reissued on Bluebird b-5334. However Blanch Calloway re-recorded "I Need Lovin" was re-recorded for ARC in 1934. with what appears to be a totally different band Maybe you're getting your labels mixed up.
According to my information there both the same take. The condition of the records may have made them sound different. I don't believe the Bluebird was dubbed from the Victor but if that was the case there would be a big difference in quality. I see you haven't taken my advice and everything is still all mixed up. At least our good friend "Art" is trying to get things straighted out. Are you going to let him finish before you??

Can't you tell she's black by her voice. No white woman can sing like that.

I totally agree with you. She's an underrated star!

Just a note: she didn't write this song. This is Cole Porter.

I know she didn't write this song. I was saying she was a songwriter though, who wrote some songs.

@rhythmbluessoul she being black didn't help either back then.

I live anything from the period 28-33 - which has that excellent baritone sax and muted trumpet.

This side wasn't re-issued on Bluebird. "I Need Lovin' " was re-issued probably in January 1934

1931 is the apex year of American music of the early 20th century. Fantastic.

I thought myself an expert on the music of this era, but this singer iscompletely new to me. Great band, too.
