@asmodeusix Thanks for you kind words. We are all still playing and Stephen and Charlie came down for my birthday and we had a great time playing together. I would think that since Daryl & John both had the same opinion as you did, when they commented in the liner notes of their recent 4 CD Box Set (there are 4 tracks of us playing live in London), that it would be a great idea to get this band together again, at least just to see what would happen, but someone else should suggest it besides me.
Loooooooove this song....Loooooooooove this video.......Loooooooooove Steven Antcliffe of Heanor! He makes me smile :D All my love, Your Priscilla xoxoxoxo
I think Daryl is an Angel fallen from heaven! That voice, that emotion, connection to the music.....ahhhhhhhhhh!! Why are all the best guys American!! I'm Irish, classical trained and honestly, I can't think of anything more perfect than this song......all of you guys in this are the best!!! Pity I was too young and too Irish to ever get to see you....Thank you EZYNE for posting....you are Hot too! LOL!!!!
If you like these clips, you'll like what you hear on Disc 1 of the new Hall & Oates 4 CD Box Set. There are 5 previously unreleased tracks at the end of that disc from a live concert in London from 1975 with this same band.
I love the sound of live mics, live amps, live drums, combined with pure talent. This performance captures the sound I love so perfectly. I own the DVD.
I also love how more of a driving beat was used in Sara Smile and Rich Girl, compared to the studio versions. Its audibly delicious on so many levels!
Live performances nowadays sound so sterilized and sanitized compared to this. Who decided that the sound of live instrumentation was a bad thing, and felt compelled to change it forever?
Many many thanks for posting this. Great to see such a high quality video of DH singing when he was young. He's go to be one of the best singers of this genre ever, and a brilliant performance here !!!
I agree, it's more heartfelt at this tempo. When they started playing it faster, it became more show piece. While I was in the band we played most of the songs at the tempos pretty close to the record. A great example of that was "Do What You Want". That was the only song I used a metronome to help me set the correct tempo when I counted it in and would rely on my own sense of timing after it began. The live MusikLaden version of it has Charlie and Todd doing an amazing solo trading bit.
Just amazing how good listening to great music like this makes you feel. By the way, I've got a question for you Eddie. What kind of snare drum were you using in this song/overall at this time? And did you use any special "tuning"? I'm not a drummer, but I know when I hear a really good snare! :) Thanks for these wonderful videos!
This DVD combined the 1976 & 1977 MusikLaden shows. This song was from the '76 show where I was using a kit that I built myself from clear blue plexiglass. I used the standard metal snare that came with my first drum kit, a 1968 Ludwig kit. I usually take and old drum head and cut out the center leaving an inch wide circle that lays on top of my batter head on the snare drum. I'm now using the standard deep metal snare drum that came with my Pearl set that I used to tour with The Monkees.
You may find this funny, but what I remember most about this show (the 1976 MusikLaden portion) was looking at those strange huge low mounted lights that looked like giant cans.
As far as the Hall of Fame, these two guys are and will be noted as the greatest in their category of the music world.

Beth, Thank you!
I'm still playing in three bands (The Livesays - Dreaming In Stereo - Tony Stevens Slow Ride).
I downloaded your 10 MP3 songs and have put them on my iPod so that I can give them a listen when I'm on the plane heading for a show.

this is the version i've been looking for.
most live versions i've seen the tempo has been a bit too fast for my taste.
this one was more along the lines of the recorded version.

thanks ezyne for putting this one out, much appreciated.
by the way is it just me or was John a little peeved towards the end because Daryl was riffing a bit too much?
kimo1371 3 years ago
@kimo1371 yeah, he was kinda hamming it up a bit.
