Many gave forgot their roots, history, confused and trying to belong in a society that does not want them. Africans come to America to better themselves, learn the language/culture and get an education. Africans do not look up to African Americans. It's really about national or cultural identity superceding genetics. The situation with black americans is just another example of this. If people put the question to them as: "are you americans of african descent?" I am sure most would say yes.
You used the example of chinese people before. I don't think that was really a good example. A better example would have been with the koreans or japanese. These two groups were a common tribe that supposedly came out of china thousands of years ago. If you were to call either group chinese, you would get an irate reaction and rightfully so. Another group would be New Zealanders or Australians. These groups don't consider themselves British despite their common origin.
