You are correct. Our ancestors would *not* have had such elaborate celebrations , but it doesn't matter what they did in ancient times. Samhain is a time for celebrating our dead ancestors. If you want to follow the Traditions , honor your dead at this time.
You must also do some more studying. Samhain is also the Celtic "New Year" !
True but I honor my ancestors everyday I always feel they are with me so I always talk to them everyday they are here watching over my family and sharing our happiness and our sadness......I know Celtic paganism I am from Scotland so I am surrounded by it even in a Christian country pictish stones just round the corner from me it is everywhere and I study paganism reading or watching documentaries lol......my son was born near imbolc.....peace
I do not think our ancestors would have had such eloborate celebrations......They only cared about surviving and where their next meal came from and protecting their terrotiry.....We were barbarians
sorry but I have to disagree, the world turned on the seasons, the festivals marked the seasons, it was a way of celebrating life and also to have fun, we were not barbarians.
so survival for our human race was just simply having fun having a hearty old laugh......thats how we survived eh for thousands of years just by going down to the stone age pub for barley bear and KFC......no worries about how we going to live through the ice age and feed ourselves....what fun......
During the ice age we had different rituals and honoured the hunter Goddess and the God. The festivals that take place over the seasons came later when we became mainly settled and they focused on the Earth Mother and the Sun God. Yes life was hard but the festivals were a way of giving us a focus throughout the year.
The gifts at these festivals, i.e. barley beer were seen as sacred, as was the bread. the festival of Beltaine in particular was a festival of fertility and the opening of the earth to new life, hence the old saying a baby conceived at Beltaine was a blessed baby.
In ancient times there was not 10 priests or priestesses rather 1 priest or shaman who called the spirits and the rituals they done was thank rituals for the animals they had
celebrations and rituals they did have rituals but not as frequent as people think woman had roles and men woman look after children men went hunting men didn't stay home or in the shelter to watch the kiddies and woman didn't go hardcore hunting rather they gathered food and kept the community clean their was 1 priest/shaman for the whole community....and people seem to forget if our ancestors hadn't endured the hardships they had we would never be here all neo pagan festivals are about sex
our ancestors probably be disgraced if they saw it.....where is the honor now that we once had in our hearts its not there now and neo paganism is also about money its a money making industry and the covens know it and this is coming from a pagan....
Well arnt you all about doom, gloom and cynicism. Please state your references because otherwise youre just passing off opinion as fact. You dont know what our ancesters would think, for them to be able to make an opinion they would have to have a grasp of the context. Yes a lot of Paganism is about sex, the majority of modern pagans were ex christians or who live in a wishy-washy christian state, its a rebellious movement.
Agree there but I made a clear disntinction about the neolithic rituals and the ones that came later, I did state the difference. The festivals that are still practiced today came from a time when we were settled and that is what this festival in the vid stems from.
Ugh. this could not possibly be more unrelated to the old celtic rituals.

@Dr490n Absolutely. The least they could do would be to honour their ancestors at home or at the graveyards.

Where is this festival held? Is it by the same people who do the Carlton Hill, Beltane fire festival?
