Look at films before CG animation overtook any organically made special effects. This plant looks amazing, even today, and with a suspension of disbelief, I believe it's real. No CG needed. I wish more movies today took on the challenge of doing things organically instead of making every movie a CG smorgasbord

Interestly, it wasn't entirely a puppet, least not in all shots. For some I think it was a smaller puppet, but using deceptive camera angles to increase the size. Also in a DVD scene, it shows the film crew holding up cards to represent the position of the small Audrey II's during this song, so they could be added in post production. No doubt they were puppets, they just weren't filmed at the same time as Audrey II was.
