I just want to bless Rob Bell as a fellow Christian and all who claim a relationship with Jesus and all who don't cause it's a good job that Christ loves us ALL and we are called to LOVE LOVE and LOVE. I had found him inspiring and refreshing, I believe God is using him in a mighty way and I pray that he continues to do so.
I don't know what a "balanced life of shalom" looks like, but now I know what a self-absorbed pastor with a big vocabulary looks like.
Somewhere in this world a mom is struggling to make ends meet in order to feed her kids; somewhere else a preacher, who is probably wealthy, is whining on how hard it is to be the pastor at a big fancy church. What a world we live in!

Any purists out there who accuse this guy of "twisting" the scriptures or putting a new spin on the gospel, molding it to the culture, etc., needs to study the history of theology. It's one long twisting, spinning and molding enterprise. It's theology. It's a creative way to get people to live abundantly, love wastefully and have faith for today and hope for tomorrow.

But when he talked about how Jesus called to Peter to come to him, walk across the water he said that the reason Peter could not walk on water because he didnt have faith in himself, was completely wrong. Imagine it were true that God really is all loving and that there were no everlasting hell and that ultimately no one was able to escape His saving grace. it is always fascinating that the people who claim to "protect" the gospel and/or God (who really doesn't need our advocacy or protection - as stated in the Bible) does it withabsolutely no love that it makes me wonder about their hearts. Didn't Jesus say to love God above all else and your neighbour like yourself? Where is the love in these comment? The unconditional love that Christ came to teach us, the all inclusive forgiveness and unlimited grace I find in Rob Bell's teachings.

What if they failed to ask you to forgive them for going against their wishes? What if they were mixed up at birth at the hospital and raised by atheists or muslims and had no way of knowing you were their parent and loved their muslim dad instead? Would you torture them?

Otherwise, it's ok for me to own slaves, kill Canaanites, and have sex with prostitutes (adultery is sex with a married woman). There is a hierarchy of teachings we derive from scripture, namely that we must love God and our neighbors (especially our enemies). Teachings that suggest otherwise need to be reexamined.

Each Gospel writer witnessed to Jesus' ministry (his life and death)through the eyes of his resurrection. He made some really great, biblical points here. Just because Rob Bell is a little off on some of his theology (which I do believe) that doesn't mean he isn't spot on on most other things!

I think the question that comes to mind, is where are our hearts in all of this? Are we more in love with our doctrines than we are with Christ? We seem to agree on very little within the body. We argue and fight, condemning each other to a heretical hell. We are missing the point. While I do not agree with all of Rob's beliefs, I am not willing to throw the baby out with the bath water. Much of what Rob presents has been needing to be said for a very long time.
Jesus fulfilled the old testament sacrafices by being our spotless lamb. its not about evolution its about Gods wrath being poured out on Jesus in our place... it would explain a whole bunch if you go to his church because you dont even know the gospel.
MetalHehd, Rob Bell has not changed the way the Gospel is presented; he has changed the Gospel itself. People SHOULD be afraid of change if what's being changed is the Gospel itself.
What good is it if the whole world is "fixed"--e.g., no more poverty, no more AIDS, no more homelessness, etc.--if at at the end of the day, our sins remain unforgiven? We can live in pure utopia here on earth and still end up in Hell if we do not repent of our sins and place our faith in Christ.

(Matthew 10:34) The satisfaction of earthly needs would not free us from the serpent within; it would only give us different ways to let it feed on our weaknesses. God wishes us to know him, and to freely give of ourselves to him, not to simply be fat and happy.

No utopia can prevent the seed of sin we carry inside us from blooming into whatever form it takes in each human life; only in Christ can we hope to achieve something higher. The sword Christ spoke of in Matthew 10:34 refers directly to those who think any human thing can bring them to God, the only true source of peace. As Paul preached repeatedly: no system of rule will ever bring us to God. Only faith does that.

The internet and message boards offer a great place for people to spar over ideas! It is great to see all the discussion surrounding Rob Bell and his new book. Seems the more controversy the better for book sales I love that we have freedom of speech in this country! Jesus supposedly said a lot of things. Some of them completely contradictory. Not only did he say "I come not to bring peace, but a sword," but he also said in Matthew 26:52 "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Hmmm?

@cqqrzgth Paul was writing against works based salvation in Galatians. He was specifically refuting the notion that Gentiles had to convert to Judaism in order to become Christians. Paul was saying that the Galatians brand of exclusivism was a false gospel, not universalism. While I am not convinced of the scriptural validity of a no-hell-universalism, I cannot discount strong universalistic themes within scripture. So long as there are sins unforgiven, there cannot be a utopia and there will be poverty, aids, homelessness, etc. Many well-intentioned and brilliant people have tried to impose their ideologies on societies of people, and have FAILED miserably...why? Well it depends what you mean by 'look for him not just in one direction'. If you mean, don't just read/listen to one preacher and idolise them as though they were the only true preacher on earth, then I do agree.
But the bible stands alone as God's word, and everything any preacher says must be weighed against it. If anyone contradicts the bible, then they are wrong. If someone is coming from a direction that contradicts the bible, they are speaking heresy. It's important to know that.
I read another comment on another Rob Bell video about how he is disguising these other beliefs as Christianity. I don't care if he is full of crap or preaching the truth. The way he speaks about God... he talks as if God were next to him... as if he were real. Not just the figure I hear about in church every Sunday. I say if a man can make you realize God is more then a name that is thrown around there doesn't need to be any more controversy. When you reach for God he reaches back.

@john17v17 Agreed but i wouldn't consider myself a 'follower' of Bell. He has some really great perspectives and when i lack spiritual intentions i often go to his videos to get re-inspired and re-interested in the gospel. There is only one christian bible and that's the one I read. It's just cool to get someone else's perspective. You know? And if your looking for God I believe the bible says God will run to you. So look for him not just in one direction. I'm only 19 i still got a lot to learn.

But when he talked about how Jesus called to Peter to come to him, walk across the water he said that the reason Peter could not walk on water because he didnt have faith in himself, was completely wrong. Now look into your heart and tell me your gut feeling. I go to Mars Hill and every week we talk about Jesus (born of the virgin Mary, God's son) who died on the cross and rose again, God, the creator etc. Pretty basic Christianity. Every week at Mars Hill we identify the historical context and the occurrences surrounding the time period and only THEN do we have something to say about it in our day and age. It's not a shallow sneaky method, but an open, honest way of finding truth.

it is always fascinating that the people who claim to "protect" the gospel and/or God (who really doesn't need our advocacy or protection - as stated in the Bible) does it withabsolutely no love that it makes me wonder about their hearts. Didn't Jesus say to love God above all else and your neighbour like yourself? Where is the love in these comment? The unconditional love that Christ came to teach us, the all inclusive forgiveness and unlimited grace I find in Rob Bell's teachings.

Love doesn't torture. Would you torture your child if he/she refused to follow your orders or advise and screamed "I hate you?" What if they said, "I don't believe you?"
What if they failed to ask you to forgive them for going against their wishes? What if they were mixed up at birth at the hospital and raised by atheists or muslims and had no way of knowing you were their parent and loved their muslim dad instead? Would you torture them?

But ALL SCRIPTURE IS GOD BREATHED AND IS USEFUL FOR TEACHING, REBUKING, CORRECTING, AND TRAINING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS (2 Tim. 3:16). @YETI42clarkrocks I go to Mars Hill and every week we talk about Jesus (born of the virgin Mary, God's son) who died on the cross for our sins and rose again, God, the creator, etc. Pretty basic Christianity. Every week at Mars Hill we identify the historical context and the occurrences surrounding the time period and only THEN do we have something to say about it in our day and age. It's not a shallow sneaky method, but an open, honest way of finding truth.

I think the question that comes to mind, is where are our hearts in all of this? Are we more in love with our doctrines than we are with Christ? We seem to agree on very little within the body. We argue and fight, condemning each other to a heretical hell. We are missing the point. While I do not agree with all of Rob's beliefs, I am not willing to throw the baby out with the bath water. Much of what Rob presents has been needing to be said for a very long time.

MetalHehd, Rob Bell has not changed the way the Gospel is presented; he has changed the Gospel itself. People SHOULD be afraid of change if what's being changed is the Gospel itself.
What good is it if the whole world is "fixed"--e.g., no more poverty, no more AIDS, no more homelessness, etc.--if at at the end of the day, our sins remain unforgiven? We can live in pure utopia here on earth and still end up in Hell if we do not repent of our sins and place our faith in Christ.

(Matthew 10:34) The satisfaction of earthly needs would not free us from the serpent within; it would only give us different ways to let it feed on our weaknesses. God wishes us to know him, and to freely give of ourselves to him, not to simply be fat and happy.

No utopia can prevent the seed of sin we carry inside us from blooming into whatever form it takes in each human life; only in Christ can we hope to achieve something higher. The sword Christ spoke of in Matthew 10:34 refers directly to those who think any human thing can bring them to God, the only true source of peace. As Paul preached repeatedly: no system of rule will ever bring us to God. Only faith does that.

You are deemed to follow the teachings and the ways of Jesus of Nazarene and not your own perceptions and beliefs regarding what is written. Seems the more controversy the better for book sales I love that we have freedom of speech in this country! Jesus supposedly said a lot of things. Some of them completely contradictory. Not only did he say "I come not to bring peace, but a sword," but he also said in Matthew 26:52 "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Hmmm?

@cqqrzgth Paul was writing against works based salvation in Galatians. He was specifically refuting the notion that Gentiles had to convert to Judaism in order to become Christians. Paul was saying that the Galatians brand of exclusivism was a false gospel, not universalism. While I am not convinced of the scriptural validity of a no-hell-universalism, I cannot discount strong universalistic themes within scripture. Well it depends what you mean by 'look for him not just in one direction'. If you mean, don't just read/listen to one preacher and idolise them as though they were the only true preacher on earth, then I do agree.
But the bible stands alone as God's word, and everything any preacher says must be weighed against it. If anyone contradicts the bible, then they are wrong. If someone is coming from a direction that contradicts the bible, they are speaking heresy. It's important to know that.

The way he speaks about God... he talks as if God were next to him... as if he were real. Not just the figure I hear about in church every Sunday. He has some really great perspectives and when i lack spiritual intentions i often go to his videos to get re-inspired and re-interested in the gospel. There is only one christian bible and that's the one I read. It's just cool to get someone else's perspective. You know? And if your looking for God I believe the bible says God will run to you. So look for him not just in one direction. I'm only 19 i still got a lot to learn.

Can we NOT worry and NOT preach about what others are doing wrong if that's even accurate, and just PREACH ABOUT JESUS and how to be more like Him. Why are so many afraid of the Christ who has set us free from this nonsense. Traditions lead to being comfortable, lets not ruin that shall we?! Please. Lets worry more about Salvation and less on the exhausted effort in criticizing others. More people would know Christ this way.

This traditionalist attitude is very wrong, a church needs to move with the times to make sure the message of Christ is heard by new generations. ..."go into ALL the world"... In the debate of which sinner is right, the answer is easy: None of us.
Rob is doing his best as a man to honor Christ. God will judge him for this effort.
When I put Rob down, I have to admit, God will judge me for this effort.
No matter how right I think I am, as a sinner, I am not even close to right. That is the beauty of what Jesus offers me. Salvation from my sins through His grace.
Jesus is the only judge there is and no man or woman on earth can judge another. Impossible.

@BenjaminSmythe We are to be discerning, we are to rightly divide the word of truth. To say don't judge is a comfortable cop out. You are correct about us as sinners. There is none good, no not one. All have fallen short. But that does not mean as a mature believer, having my senses exercised, I can't make and educated decision on whether someone preaches truth or heresy. I have am called to become mature in my faith, not requiring the milk of the word, but able to digest the meat.

@4smartypants What about 1 and 2 Timothy, where Paul tells timothy that people doing God's work need to have their lives in order before they can be effective ministers? I'm not saying I know what's going on in Mr. Bell's life, but he makes a valid point that it is very necessary for a pastor to prioritize. Many of the great revival ministers-missionaries that led huge reformations in america and throughout the world ended up losing their own children.Pastors who don't talk to God don't make it.

The issue here is that we LIMIT GOD we limit his power, his truth and HIM so when someone try to expand his perspective of GOD his vision of GOD .. that has sooo many ways to present himself in the world that HE created.. Jesuschrist! GOD is not squared, u cannot put GOD in a box.. GOD IS the greatest in ALL .. meaning that if We can be Spontaneous, Dynamic, And each and one of us is unique (he creates of unique) and we are plenty!!!.. for GOd's sake.....He IS the MOST dynamic, creative of all..

if you dont like him. dont listen. if you do like him. then listen. its not about what YOU think is right. its about what GOD thinks is right. if his teachings are so wrong then people wont feel the spirit of God through them and eventually it will die out anyway. its not up to youtube society to decide the truth, God is truth. if this is such a problem for you then GO out there and LEARN and TEACH yourself! put out or shutup.

@BeautifullyAwaken It is about what we think is right, because what a good Christian thinks is right is essentially what they feel God thinks is right.
Also, you're premise that if he really isn't of God means that his church won't survive is not true. Do you really think that all pastors today teach the truth? Do you think that there are no false teachers? The Bible warned against false teachers. They will always exist (even though Rob Bell is NOT one of them).
