I saw this on TV 30+ years ago, with an interesting variation. After seeing the bar cut through the window you were shown that the bar was actually made of flexible rubber. It was then placed back in the window and appeared to bend instead of cutting through the frame.
Well, it could possibly fail if you were close enough so that your eyes can use parallax to determine which side of the window is in front, and which one is in the back. But you'd have to be very close to see it probably... from a reasonable distance, such as in this video, my guess is that it would work exactly the same. Something to try out at home!
I may just have to model one in CAD, spin it to get the shape right and cut one on my brothers laser to try this out.. That Ames guy is a smart cookie.

Alsp,. you could use that Wii "3D" trick to show that, even with parallax, at a far enough distance you get the same effect.
