i don't really think the manuscripts spoil the game for you....i just think it fills in some holes and fills you in on what's going on and what's' at hand. As for the rest of the game, it reminds a little of the horror movie "Secret Window" Where the writer had created this character which then became his alter ego that helped him kill. Maybe it's the same for Alan. Maybe he's really doing everything...the kidnapping...the arrangement of the cabin etc. he could be behind it all without knowing.
