  • WHy the fuck are you trash talking John Mayer when your watching Joe? They are both great guitarist, and should'nt be compared. Get a life dudes.

  • Joe would sing John Mayer under the table! Mayer can't sing!

  • John and Joe both are great in they're own way. They both get as much as they can out of they're guitars as they can. Which is what playing guitar is about, i think they both wish they could be as good as each other in different ways.

  • @Takistater

Yeah i kinda agree..I think John Mayer is a better songwriter/singer...but Joe is a FAR superior guitar player

  • Bummer to hear JB was a little remote...seems like he would be a cool guy. got to meet my heroes Beck, Page, and Satch and they were all super cool.

  • I 've seen him 4 times now. After he played with clapton it became a pain in the ass. Very rude to the public because his tone was not correct.....If he could blame us ( 5000 people ) for it...No pictures, etc, etc. The best I've seen him was when he played through one amp, a Marshall, and several pedals. He's famous now but I hope he comes back to earth someday!

  • @bahady30 what do you mean, rude ?

  • @fend14 ,

Read ....and you know what I mean !

  • @bahady30

Dude hes one of the most down to earth guitarists out there..its always struck me how approachable he is...i realy cant see how hes in any way rude tbh

  • @xxxEnterSandmanXxX

That's what you think,. We saw him at the Ospel Bluesfestival in Holland en at the BRBF in Peer Belgium and he didn't even shake hands with the people who booked him. Don't get me wrong he's a hell of a guitar player but if his tone sucks on stage, never blame the public for that !

  • does it really matter that he sounds like Eric Johnson? Fucking YouTube man!! just a place to bicker and talk shit. every guitar player has influences, and it shows in their styles. thats how we learn, then it becomes part of our own style. JB is in no way an EJ clone.

  • ed hardy t-shirt?

    uncool

  • Tone is a combination of your amp, your guitar, and your hands. Always has been, always will be. None of us will ever sound like Joe because we don't have his hands, and while Joe uses a lot of Eric Johnson's licks and effects (delay, chorus, etc), it's still a different tone because of his hands.

  • doesn't it remind you just a little bit of Eric Johnson?

  • hey guys, thanks so much for your support. Please go to the Official Joe Bonamassa YouTube Channel and subscribe!

  • Amaznig how a humbucker gibson can sound like Eric Johnson with a sigle coil fender. I think it proves my personal theory that it is more about the gear then the guitar. Interesting video non the less.

  • When has been recorded this video?

  • Looking at his weight and hair length would be early/mid 07

  • oh! you are very observant, thank you!

  • Clapton was in his prime in cream, john mayal, love when he play les paul

  • what are you the grammer police this is an amp demo not an english lesson

  • Actually he does not use it as an adjective. He uses it as a noun, 'glob of sound'. Which is actually an accurate use of the word. It is synonymous with chunk, clump, blob etc. It is similar in usage to a collective noun as in 'herd' of cattle, 'flock' of sheep. Just thought that you were the one in need of a grammar lesson.

  • Yes, but he says he's using an adjective. Listen at 3:33.

  • Apologies, he does say that. He uses the word correctly and then describes it as an adjective. You camsolo were correct and I am suitably humbled. I should listen more closely.

  • he stole my tone........ well actually i stole his tone

  • Great all around musician. Comparisons to EJ are understandable, but don't tell the whole story. Joe can play AND sing the blues whereas EJ sings mostly as accompaniment for his mind-blowing guitar playing. EJ seems to have a wider command of his instrument and can play any style of music he chooses. However, Joe is a master of the blues style vocally and instrumentally. I have seen EJ live many times and never seen Joe, but would jump at the chance to.

  • Clapton CREAM tone

  • Killer tone!

  • Very Eric Johnson-ish to me.

  • Comment removed

  • joe knows that tone comes from skill, guitars, and amps, not crappy effects pedals. i love that he doesn't use a ton of effects.

  • It's OK trickynuggets we all make mistakes, even me. It's also O.K. to admit it and move on. Don't take it too hard. Just saying. LOL

  • You said you could type in English and then you make a typo which is a simple mistake!!!!. fair enough. But then you rate Crapton and mayer and again you could have made a simple mistake. either of taste or judgement. Just saying. lol

  • You rate Crapton and Mayer nuff said. Saddo.

  • stop calling a legend 'crapton', just actually stfu, if you don't rate Clapton as a guitarist you're an idiot. 'nuff said'

  • sensitive type, uhh!

  • well no but your crapton joke was unfunny and ignorant the first time and you keep using it. so shush

  • Oh alright then, just for you I will not call old Crappy Crapton, crapton ever again. I am tempted to use crapped on instead but that would be far too facile and juvenile and so I will behave sensibly and stay shushed by saying nothing at all.

  • LOL

    Eric Crapton :)

  • so true. clapton is severly overrated. not very a very creative guitarist.

  • Where as I see it as rather shallow to run down music I do not like to defend with your own form of bigotry is no better .

  • Awesome player but sounds a little like Eric Johnson don't you think? Joe needs to find his own voice. Thanks for posting this

  • Joe live is a revelation, a fine player, singer and writer.

  • It's not about playing a guitar, thousands of great guitarists exist. It's all about truth, honesty, passion, commitment, great communication, the blues, rock, respect, chops and dignity. Peter Green has it, Jeff Beck has it, Jimmy Page has it, Rory Gallagher had it, Stevie Ray Vaughan had it Zappa had it, Bonamassa has it. Mayer does not IMHO.

  • Mayer is just riding other people's coattails . He's more about porking starlets than playing the Blues . I can't say it enough how much I hate that cocksucker . Bonamassa is the King of Blues right now .

  • your comment is ace voodoochild respect.

  • People should not smoke crack and get on the internet. Both are exceptional players, and their styles are very similar in many ways.

  • What do you know, you rate Crapton's recent stuff and mayer. That about says it all really. You got somethin up your crack my friend.

  • Islwynpaul, I have also commented on Buddy Guy and B.B. King. So what? I've been playing most of my life, professionally for the majority of that, and I can even type in English. Perhaps you should spend less time on YouTube on more time in the study of helping verbs. Twit.

  • What does your last sentence actually mean? You say you can type in English and then you compose a sentence that lacks structure and grammatical logic. Just saying.

  • Typo. It doesn't come as a shock you didn't get it.

  • sad mayer lover dick know nothing at all. mayer plays for chicks, to chicks, these chicks know nowt about music, only that mayer is cute, full stop. Joe is a musician with a musicians heart, mayer is a tart.

  • your right.. joe bonamass is a DON !!!

but if you think that bout mayer.. fair enough thats an opinion.. but i think you might have missed the point.. mayer can play circles round most players

  • i think this dude is probably the best blues guitarist ever. he's played a strat before, there are a few vids, but i like the LP much better. the strat is like too twangy and noisy. the LP's humbuckers are much smoother and has more growl in the sound.

  • humbuckers smear more (to me).....certain subtleties are lost whenevr I use humbuckers, but the roar is great.

  • fail.

  • i just love this guy, he knows his shit. i just wish he'd play a strat....then again he might play a les paul better than a strat... i dunno, either way he is the best right now, in my world...eric gales rocks too...

  • Personally I like him better with a strat in his hands .I think his feel is a bit lost on a LP .but who am I to tell him that.

  • and there you have it . for 15 grand. sweet setup, Joe is the man......

  • i wonder if you guys say that about Frank Marino and Robin Trower whom both sound like Hnedrix but are not.The kid is talented..way more than i could ever be and i have been playing for 45 years. But i am a fan of economy..with that said...he has great chops.

  • i like him, but there is to much delay and reverb tha i barely heard the difference between the amps

  • This is YouTube though

  • went to see joe last night at westbury. I have been playing for 30 years, and this guy is off the hook live! HOLY SHIT!! what a show man. it sounds much better live...

  • Hey I was there too. Did you ever see anyone play an acoustic like that. I was floored. Saw him last year at BB Kings. Joe kicks ass!

  • Too much EJ's licks in his playing...

  • ej? maybe...

I hear clapton lickss, the tone is clapton, no?

  • Never heard Clapton playing like this, maybe in his early days, I don't know him well enough, but those descending pentatonic runs ending with an octave on the 6th and 4th strings(0.16-0.19) is definitely biggest EJ's cliche, which became very boring to me...If it is originally EC's, than too bad for EJ:)

  • I agree with you, but i think the tone is clapton on 60's. remember a little bit...

    Bonamassa has so much influences

  • yeah, but without this long echo//////

  • oh yeah...

  • Being able to even remotely sound like Eric Johnson is no mean feat in itself.

  • I like how he mixes four great amps together.

His guitar sound drips in great tone.

  • Both Mayer and Bonamassa are great guitarists with very different styles...

The question is what's your favorite style:

    SRV's style or Eric Johnson's...

  • voodoo you mean thats it? srv or eric johnson?...the question is,why do people like to sit and judge, rather than listen and enjoy?

    it's all damn good music-

  • I think peaple just don't appreciate how big Bonamassa and Mayer because they don't know how hard it is to be a "real" professional guitarist

  • I just don't understand some people...most players watching this video could only wish to be compared to Eric Johnson(one of the greats). To have technical ability and a deep understanding of music is something which we should all hope to achieve. Bonamassa plays Eric Johnson "style" licks, but writes many heavier sounding songs which appeal to a much wider audience than Johnson. And as any real musicians know...even a bar gig can be inspiring when performed right...

  • John Mayer can only hope to ever be as good as Bonamassa..I like his playing..but it's just true..

  • @sinsofourfathers yes but the chicks dig mayer more lol

  • @sinsofourfathers And Joe Bonamassa can only hope to be as good as eric johnson

  • @fridgeslayer94 Yeah, but you defend Justin bieber so..

  • @sinsofourfathers haha, did you really look up what I like to insult me, dude i'm a youtube commentor don't take it so seriously. And besides, your wrong I gave it thumbs up cause it's HILARIUOS. If you haven't watched it do it now! this kid is dilussional to the nth degree.

  • @fridgeslayer94

bonamassa is just as good as eric johnson

  • @infinityjet That's very subjective now isn't it?

  • @fridgeslayer94

not really...many people regard this guy as the best in the world nowadays

  • @infinityjet Do you know what subjective mean?

"many" people is not everybody, as long as everyone don't think of bonamassa as the greatest guitarist in the world, it'll still be subjective. A lot of people follow L Ron Hubbard aswell, does that make scientology our one true religion?

  • because mayer sold his love for Blues to play mass produced pop music that APPEALS to the screaming teenage girls. :)

  • Your telling me Mayer doesn't sound like Stevie Ray all the time.

Mayer can't carry Joe guitar case.

Yes, Joe has been heavily influenced by Eric. Classifying Joe as just EJ is totally wrong. Joe is the most well round diverse, intense blues guy in the business.

Joe is doing what he wants to do & not writing some cheese dick radio song for wool.

  • even if what you wrote was true, and its not. hes still doing better than you or me mate.i cant believe you wrote john batter than joe lol its not like you cant play.

  • How are numbers of sremaing females indicators of ability, look at the Beatles, the girls loved thier early stuff, but the Beatles found that it stopped being about thier music, instead many of the female fans just wanted to stand and scream about how cute they were, no offence to women, but using screaming female fans as an indicator of musical ability or value is stupid. Besides, Mayer's blues are limp wristed anyway, go and listen to Buddy Guy for real blues. (do you even know who that is?)

  • Agree about limp wristed mayer.

  • haha simple setup eh....i was thinking like 1 amp with one chord to a guitar...

  • man i cant wait to see him live at the handle bar june 12th. its going to be awesome! i will bring my camera and take pics and record it on video and post it on here! it will be a real treat! :P

  • man i love this guy killer tone and clean playing. clarity in your notes is what really makes you a good player. its erally great to play fast and you can still hear every note. just like eric johnson!!!!!! :) i like joe 2nd best and eric johnson 1st but joe is still the man!!!!!!!!!

  • Looks like a hit a nerve with one of Joe's fanbois, huh?

  • It seems like someone's upset because they've been playing guitar for all their life and they'll never be 1/100th as talented as Joe. Pathetic.

  • is it just me or does this guy rarely use his pinky finger when he plays. most of the time it just hangs below the fretboard. why

  • Wish I could play at his ability with just three fingers...

  • Chris Duarte has 4 amps too! Joe Rocks but I agree with Tchpandy, a little much on the reverb and a little muddy. Thats why I love Chris Duarte's tone. hes got it ALL. Dont get me rong though I LOVE Joe Bonamassa as well!!

  • i certainly don't have virgin ears :-) but with eyes closed i'd have problems identifying the amps. they do sound pretty similar.

  • The camera filming him must be terrible

I can hear the changes in the amps but.. the bit about how he controlls his chanels by the volum,e controll... they both sounded distrted.

For Joe Bonomassa U'd buy a DECENT CAMERA

  • this guy is the new king of the blues

  • I'm pretty sure a lot of the differences are lost in the shitty camera used for recording as well as the compression of YouTube videos. =)

  • yea, they all sound the same if ur a pussy with virgin ears...

  • sound the same? Are you kidding? Can't you hear the difference EVEN IN JUST THE GAIN? good lord, tchpandy

  • I've seen him!! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING...

  • ooooooh nice toys!!!!!

  • The man knows his gear, which is really cool to see.

  • Sweet baby Jesus, I want those amps.

  • Bonamassa has played like this or better since he was about 12

  • his playing is nothing like EJs ... joe sounds a lot more like old cream style clapton with more pentatonics/jazz scales then eric Johnson.

  • True man, Bonamassa is not a shredder like Eric. Not that there is anything wrong with shredding, but lets face it EJ is about as fast as they come...

  • id have to agree. Specially with that studio type Delay

  • He's a fantastic guitarist, but he sounds more and more like EJ every time I hear him.

  • It's true but didn't realize it up to now.

  • Wow. Nice! Basically, I'll have to replace my effects box with amp heads - that would be his effects box! I'll just have to get a set up crew. He's very down to earth - great tone!!!

  • actually he has shitloads of stomp boxez

  • wow....

  • Ya gotta love this kid! He's down to earth. Thank You for posting. All The Best in 2008! Will

  • Wonderful playing Mr Bonamassa. Getting better all the time ;-)

  • The tone says it all. Up there with EJ...

  • just nasty tones from the dumble camp on here.

  • Joe is really good player... even though he comes off as some one's nerdy younger brother. Thankfully he doesn't seem to be full of himself unlike a lot of other players.

  • It MAY come off as someone's nerdy younger brother. But just for those who still think in terms of "this one's a nerd, this one's cool". Which is a teenager thing really. For grown ups - say like me - he comes off as an incredibly humble, nice, genuine young man with incredible - in-cre-di-ble - talent, passion and genuine dedication. Hats off for Joe.

  • Agreed.

  • seconded

  • hes great....good work!

  • There seems to be a lot of redundancy in his rig, the Category 5 amp is a clone of a Marshall, and the Carol Anne and the Two Rock are both brilliant (and ridiculously expensive) clones of a Dumble. His set up is clearly inspired by Eric Johnson's legendary on stage guitar shop, albeit with more modern amps.

  • The Category 5 is a '68 Plexi clone, with mid boost(which sounds nothing like a Marshall Jubilee). The Carol Anne and Two Rock are based around different Dumbles(as no 2 Dumbles had the same specs), and as such, are voiced differently. Live, it's much easier to hear the differences, than on YouTube, but there are distinct timbral variations going on.

  • I think you're probably right as far as "live vs. video" sound quality. I'm no authority on Dumbles by any means, but there seems to be a certain tonality that the newer clones tend to have, a smoother, more dynamic overdrive than say, a Marshall. Anyway, thanks for the input. Keep rockin'!

  • thanks joe, nice tone.

  • Have you seen Joe live? I doubt seriously you'd make that analogy if you had. He has some of the best tone of anybody out there playing.

  • Sweet man.

  • :D joeeeeee

  • welcome to you tube man!great vid, can't say im not jealous of joes kit!!!!
