I've been waiting a long time for someone who can do the following:
1. Lay down rock, rock blues and blues tunes that will have you picking your jaw up off the floor. 2. Absolutely rip apart the fretboard by applying multilple techniques and blazing chops (this guy is NOT a one trick pony) from song to song and even within a song. 3. Have a voice that supports his guitar work AND can sing within the framework of multiple styles (rock, blues, rock blues etc..). JOE BONAMASSA is the REAL DEAL!!!
John and Joe both are great in they're own way. They both get as much as they can out of they're guitars as they can. Which is what playing guitar is about, i think they both wish they could be as good as each other in different ways.
I 've seen him 4 times now. After he played with clapton it became a pain in the ass. Very rude to the public because his tone was not correct.....If he could blame us ( 5000 people ) for it...No pictures, etc, etc. The best I've seen him was when he played through one amp, a Marshall, and several pedals. He's famous now but I hope he comes back to earth someday!
Dude hes one of the most down to earth guitarists out there..its always struck me how approachable he is...i realy cant see how hes in any way rude tbh
That's what you think,. We saw him at the Ospel Bluesfestival in Holland en at the BRBF in Peer Belgium and he didn't even shake hands with the people who booked him. Don't get me wrong he's a hell of a guitar player but if his tone sucks on stage, never blame the public for that !
does it really matter that he sounds like Eric Johnson? Fucking YouTube man!! just a place to bicker and talk shit. every guitar player has influences, and it shows in their styles. thats how we learn, then it becomes part of our own style. JB is in no way an EJ clone.
Tone is a combination of your amp, your guitar, and your hands. Always has been, always will be. None of us will ever sound like Joe because we don't have his hands, and while Joe uses a lot of Eric Johnson's licks and effects (delay, chorus, etc), it's still a different tone because of his hands.
Amaznig how a humbucker gibson can sound like Eric Johnson with a sigle coil fender. I think it proves my personal theory that it is more about the gear then the guitar. Interesting video non the less.
Actually he does not use it as an adjective. He uses it as a noun, 'glob of sound'. Which is actually an accurate use of the word. It is synonymous with chunk, clump, blob etc. It is similar in usage to a collective noun as in 'herd' of cattle, 'flock' of sheep. Just thought that you were the one in need of a grammar lesson.
Apologies, he does say that. He uses the word correctly and then describes it as an adjective. You camsolo were correct and I am suitably humbled. I should listen more closely.
Great all around musician. Comparisons to EJ are understandable, but don't tell the whole story. Joe can play AND sing the blues whereas EJ sings mostly as accompaniment for his mind-blowing guitar playing. EJ seems to have a wider command of his instrument and can play any style of music he chooses. However, Joe is a master of the blues style vocally and instrumentally. I have seen EJ live many times and never seen Joe, but would jump at the chance to.
You said you could type in English and then you make a typo which is a simple mistake!!!!. fair enough. But then you rate Crapton and mayer and again you could have made a simple mistake. either of taste or judgement. Just saying. lol
Oh alright then, just for you I will not call old Crappy Crapton, crapton ever again. I am tempted to use crapped on instead but that would be far too facile and juvenile and so I will behave sensibly and stay shushed by saying nothing at all.
It's not about playing a guitar, thousands of great guitarists exist. It's all about truth, honesty, passion, commitment, great communication, the blues, rock, respect, chops and dignity. Peter Green has it, Jeff Beck has it, Jimmy Page has it, Rory Gallagher had it, Stevie Ray Vaughan had it Zappa had it, Bonamassa has it. Mayer does not IMHO.
Mayer is just riding other people's coattails . He's more about porking starlets than playing the Blues . I can't say it enough how much I hate that cocksucker . Bonamassa is the King of Blues right now .
Islwynpaul, I have also commented on Buddy Guy and B.B. King. So what? I've been playing most of my life, professionally for the majority of that, and I can even type in English. Perhaps you should spend less time on YouTube on more time in the study of helping verbs. Twit.

went to see joe last night at westbury. I have been playing for 30 years, and this guy is off the hook live! HOLY SHIT!! what a show man. it sounds much better live...
Never heard Clapton playing like this, maybe in his early days, I don't know him well enough, but those descending pentatonic runs ending with an octave on the 6th and 4th strings(0.16-0.19) is definitely biggest EJ's cliche, which became very boring to me...If it is originally EC's, than too bad for EJ:)
I just don't understand some people...most players watching this video could only wish to be compared to Eric Johnson(one of the greats). To have technical ability and a deep understanding of music is something which we should all hope to achieve. Bonamassa plays Eric Johnson "style" licks, but writes many heavier sounding songs which appeal to a much wider audience than Johnson. Yes, Joe has been heavily influenced by Eric. Classifying Joe as just EJ is totally wrong. Joe is the most well round diverse, intense blues guy in the business.
Joe is doing what he wants to do & not writing some cheese dick radio song for wool.
even if what you wrote was true, and its not. hes still doing better than you or me mate.i cant believe you wrote john batter than joe lol its not like you cant play.
How are numbers of sremaing females indicators of ability, look at the Beatles, the girls loved thier early stuff, but the Beatles found that it stopped being about thier music, instead many of the female fans just wanted to stand and scream about how cute they were, no offence to women, but using screaming female fans as an indicator of musical ability or value is stupid. Besides, Mayer's blues are limp wristed anyway, go and listen to Buddy Guy for real blues. (do you even know who that is?)
man i cant wait to see him live at the handle bar june 12th. its going to be awesome! i will bring my camera and take pics and record it on video and post it on here! it will be a real treat! :P
man i love this guy killer tone and clean playing. clarity in your notes is what really makes you a good player. its erally great to play fast and you can still hear every note. just like eric johnson!!!!!! :) i like joe 2nd best and eric johnson 1st but joe is still the man!!!!!!!!!
Chris Duarte has 4 amps too! Joe Rocks but I agree with Tchpandy, a little much on the reverb and a little muddy. Thats why I love Chris Duarte's tone. hes got it ALL. Dont get me rong though I LOVE Joe Bonamassa as well!!
True man, Bonamassa is not a shredder like Eric. Not that there is anything wrong with shredding, but lets face it EJ is about as fast as they come...
Wow. Nice! Basically, I'll have to replace my effects box with amp heads - that would be his effects box! I'll just have to get a set up crew. He's very down to earth - great tone!!!
Joe is really good player... even though he comes off as some one's nerdy younger brother. Thankfully he doesn't seem to be full of himself unlike a lot of other players.
It MAY come off as someone's nerdy younger brother. But just for those who still think in terms of "this one's a nerd, this one's cool". Which is a teenager thing really. For grown ups - say like me - he comes off as an incredibly humble, nice, genuine young man with incredible - in-cre-di-ble - talent, passion and genuine dedication. Hats off for Joe.
There seems to be a lot of redundancy in his rig, the Category 5 amp is a clone of a Marshall, and the Carol Anne and the Two Rock are both brilliant (and ridiculously expensive) clones of a Dumble. His set up is clearly inspired by Eric Johnson's legendary on stage guitar shop, albeit with more modern amps.
The Category 5 is a '68 Plexi clone, with mid boost(which sounds nothing like a Marshall Jubilee). The Carol Anne and Two Rock are based around different Dumbles(as no 2 Dumbles had the same specs), and as such, are voiced differently. Live, it's much easier to hear the differences, than on YouTube, but there are distinct timbral variations going on.
I think you're probably right as far as "live vs. video" sound quality. I'm no authority on Dumbles by any means, but there seems to be a certain tonality that the newer clones tend to have, a smoother, more dynamic overdrive than say, a Marshall. Anyway, thanks for the input. Keep rockin'!

i hate people getting too picky over things like this,
your guitar sound has competition as soon as bass, drums, keyboard get into the line up,
so just because an amp sounds similiar alone,
it may be a completely question when he gets his band behind him,
and im sure hes had just as much if not more gigging experience than anyone posting youtube comments has,
as for the reverb thing, i'd put it down to room acoustics,
cheers

I can hear the changes in the amps but.. the bit about how he controlls his chanels by the volum,e controll... they both sounded distrted.
For Joe Bonomassa U'd buy a DECENT CAMERA

Wow! FOUR amps! And they all sound EXACTLY THE FUCKING SAME!
Amazing stuff! Hooray for sonic diversity!
tchpandy 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure a lot of the differences are lost in the shitty camera used for recording as well as the compression of YouTube videos. =)

yea, they all sound the same if ur a pussy with virgin ears...

sound the same? Are you kidding? Can't you hear the difference EVEN IN JUST THE GAIN? good lord, tchpandy

Bonamassa has played like this or better since he was about 12
chrohm 4 years ago
his playing is nothing like EJs ... joe sounds a lot more like old cream style clapton with more pentatonics/jazz scales then eric Johnson.
gregory49 4 years ago 3
True man, Bonamassa is not a shredder like Eric. Not that there is anything wrong with shredding, but lets face it EJ is about as fast as they come...

id have to agree. Specially with that studio type Delay
louisguitarslinger 4 years ago
He's a fantastic guitarist, but he sounds more and more like EJ every time I hear him.

It's true but didn't realize it up to now.

Wow. Nice! Basically, I'll have to replace my effects box with amp heads - that would be his effects box! I'll just have to get a set up crew. He's very down to earth - great tone!!!

actually he has shitloads of stomp boxez

Wonderful playing Mr Bonamassa. Getting better all the time ;-)

The tone says it all. Up there with EJ...

just nasty tones from the dumble camp on here.

Joe is really good player... even though he comes off as some one's nerdy younger brother. Thankfully he doesn't seem to be full of himself unlike a lot of other players.
eatsandsleeps 4 years ago

His set up is clearly inspired by Eric Johnson's legendary on stage guitar shop, albeit with more modern amps.
bigtophalloween 4 years ago
The Category 5 is a '68 Plexi clone, with mid boost(which sounds nothing like a Marshall Jubilee). The Carol Anne and Two Rock are based around different Dumbles(as no 2 Dumbles had the same specs), and as such, are voiced differently. Live, it's much easier to hear the differences, than on YouTube, but there are distinct timbral variations going on.
RogerBiggerstaff 4 years ago
I think you're probably right as far as "live vs. video" sound quality. I'm no authority on Dumbles by any means, but there seems to be a certain tonality that the newer clones tend to have, a smoother, more dynamic overdrive than say, a Marshall. Anyway, thanks for the input. Keep rockin'!

thanks joe, nice tone.

he switches different amps but they all sound the same !!! how foolish to drag around all that stuff for nothing, i heard more sound coming out of my grandpa's asshole...
frankie28web 4 years ago
Have you seen Joe live? I doubt seriously you'd make that analogy if you had. He has some of the best tone of anybody out there playing.

Exactly right. Muddy as hell and drenched with digital reverb. Pointless. Easier to carry around a POD.
