some of my all time favorite movie lines are from this movie..."i never answer letters from large corporations" ~ " do you have a check or good news? if you don't i don't want to talk with you." [paraphrasing...;) ]
I wish they would have let Sandy Dennis reprise her role from Broadway. Not to diminish Barbara Harris' talents, she's amazing, but Sandy would have taken this role into the stratosphere!
This was a time and place when they understood — and valued — such quaint old concepts as comedic timing and quality writing and subtle yet powerful character delivery. In an age when Steve Caral's over-done buffoonery passes for comedy, few would understand stuff as richly hilarious as A Thousand Clowns ... and I think that makes me like it all the better.
I couldn't agree more. This film is a gem! It harkens back to a time when filmmakers could blend style and substance into a piece that could make you laugh, cry and unashamedly question the meaning and motives of everything... while at the same time leave you with the possibility that all was not completely lost. It is in the truest sense of the word a charming film.. I think most of that charm is lost on the current generation of moviegoers. Pity.
Saw this movie when it first came out. The audience laughed almost non-stop throughout the movie. I saw it 7 times. Each time I laughed less, but this is the first and only movie I ever saw that many tmes. I have never laughed so much and so hard, and the audiences were in histerics throughout the entire movie. Have a second generation VHS copy and would love it on a DVD
Agreed with all the thank yous. You've done me and the rest of us a great service. My mother and father loved this film and we watched it whenever it was on tv.
Great monolouge from a wonderful film. I was a small child when this film came out and my parents took us to a double feature at the drive in where this was the second film.I had fallen asleep. Recently, I have seen it on the Turner Movie Classics station and fell in love with this film.
I saw this movie about thirty years ago - it bowled me over. I managed to get the script but never actually seen it since - seems unavailable in Britain. Pity - I think it's beautiful. Thanks for putting the clips up...
I'm assuming you transferred this from a VHS tape - just wondering, what print of the VHS do you have? I ordered one from 1993 that hasn't arrived yet and I'm just hoping that it's in the right aspect ratio ...if you have the same one, then I'm in luck.
The last line at 2:31 of this great movie clip is 'that my sister and I comunicate strictly by rumor'....
(I have used line repeatedly when speaking about my dysfunctional family since I was 10 years old...)
A movie that I never get tired of seeing.......again.
