@tylenator552 In all too many sections of the knife community dissenting opinions are viewed as heresy. I dared to suggests that a particular knife by Spyderco was not a very practical design so honor demands that I be crushed like a Tiananmen Square protester.
Also a fair number of the people doing this are probably like mcarty3611 above, who seems to be having trouble understanding what I actually said, and is eager to defend a knife I venture to guess he has not actually used.
@ericambrosecoon That would be tough to do considering it's several states away at this point. Also, my life may be relatively pointless, but spending time making Youtube videos is still a step up from spending time leaving rude nonsense comments.
@NaxTactical You are of course welcome to your opinion. I personally don't think that is an adequate excuse for having an uncomfortable and poorly designed handle. Knives can be pretty AND usable.
ive been drooling over this knife for months considering getting one but i have to agree with all the points you made and now im not too sure. But it still looks great
To be honest, that knife isn't positioned as an ultra-ergonomic workhorse. it's not an endura nor it is not military. it's just a high quality collectible from spyderco that can also cut reasonably. while I agree with you that it's not very practical, I don't think it should be considered flawed because of that...
@jordantheok Yeh, middle finger flick, i like it because you don't have to adjust your grip as much after opening to start using the knife. It feels like you keep a better grip on the thing in many cases.
Very good and honest review! I definitely have to agree with you on this one, it's just not for everyone. I handled one when i went to spyderco and i just couldn't get a comfortable grip on that choil.
The carraca on mine broke too, after probably fewer than 100 opening/closings. It was quieter than expected to begin with. So disappointed. Also, I think drilling holes for the pocket clip all over the knife ruins the aesthetic. Especially when the black clip looks awful on the stainless bolster. Trying to please everybody I guess, same problem with the handle, choil sizing. Good review.
I don't think that is a backspacer. There are no screws to hold it in place. The screws on the handle appear to hold the scales to the steel. Otherwise, they would interfere with the blade.
@Supermassively Windows Movie Maker was screwing with my volume levels. I'm not using it anymore. Several videos from around this time are like this. They're ok on my computer which has a full sound system with an amp (which is why I didn't notice), but on laptops and stuff they're too quiet.
Spyderco's quality has really gone downhill. It used to be that you would buy a Military a pretty much know the knife was a 100% - but these days even the locks have serious flaws in them to the point where they're dangerously poor. Besides this I've found rust on the Para 2 internals, had a few Enduras fail on me (liners bend, locks are shit), extremely poor fit n finish on a Caly 3.5, plus much much more...
At the same time Kershaw is selling $50 dollar knives with twice the fit n finish...
I think I hear the carraca sound. According to some of the magazines review I have read, the sound is very faint. The user will feel it more than hear it, according to the reviewers. In addition, I have heard, spanish navajas dont all have the sound.
@trubblman Nope. No sound from the knife no feel of it either. I don't really see how other knives having or not having sound is relevant...this knife is supposed to make noise and it doesn't because the mechanism breaks...as I explained in the video.
This review is kind of devastating for that product. I mean.. just the examples of difficulties with grip and control seem rather undeniable. I don't know if there is some other way you are supposed to use this knife, but I don't see it. I think it lacks aesthetics as well. The other thing though is price. No way should a production knife like this cost so much. Not without a substantial delivery in terms of quality, which this doesn't show in terms of durability.
I have had the Navaja since release and my carraca is still 100 percent functional. The grip for me in all formats is comfortable also - perhaps the size of your hands are an issue? The 2 finger spaces on the underside are for a three finger choke up - mine worked fine for that also :S. I really appreciate your review - but perhaps for you this knife was not the one.
Very balanced review! Speaking of love-hate relationships, it's the same with me and the Boker Plus product line: I love the knives but I hate Boker's carelessness about quality control.
What's the price ?

@mcarty3611 I never said Spyderco didn't rock in general, just that this particular knife does not rock. Can you grasp the distinction?

You make some very good points; but keep in mind, this is not a workhorse, it's a collectible or gentlemen's knife.

I still want one :)
This is the first Spydy I will buy for pure design appeal.
I think it is a step in the right direction...Add some refinement and they will have a world class knife.
I do not think Kershaw is even close to being the same species never mind same quality.
