Lance I have a Radio Shack PRO-404 scanner. I use it completely for railfanning the CSX and P&L in Florida and Kentucky. Now I got the regular generic antenna. IS there a good antenna that can reach 35 miles thats portable. Now I plan on buying the same model as you, because its probably better. Please help.
Here in the US many states have laws that prohibit scanners in your car that can pick up police frequencies. I know 90% of railfans with scanners violate this law one time or another, but it's good information to know. So if you do have a scanner with you, don't be a douche and be waving it around in plain view, and don't give the police a reason to stop you.
Lance another question is how far can an antenna like that one that came with it reach? how many KM's away? also the Canadian Trackside Guide 2011 is sold out, i can't find where to buy it :(
The original antenna is pretty good... but its designed for the 450 Mhz range so its performance is limited at 160-161 Mhz... I often strategically position myself in areas that are in between or closer to transmission points to improve reception.
@LanceCampeau Yeah that would make sence. Hey i posted other comments to it would be nice if i could get reply's so i can figure out what the hell im going to do lol.
Great video lance it helped me out alot since i'm trying to figure out the cheapest ways to do so. Is there a Canadian Trackside Guide 2011 out? also how much does it cost in CAD? thanks.
Mobile phones are publicly aired frequencies where court warrants aren't required for eavesdropping. The railroads being tapped by anyone is a good example. Is their a guide that lists local mobile phone frequencies. What fun it would be to listen to the private conversations of friends, family, and neighbors legally!
Hey Lance my scanner pro 84 is having some problems it will not pick up anything outside of a mile with an after market antenna, do you have any idea what might be going on with this thing.
I just bought one of these after watching this video. A 170$ expense. Unfortunately i am only able to receive the weather and an airport. I am unable to hear The Police and other emergency officials . I may hold on to this because i am a railfan however there are no trains around me so right now it is an expensive paperweight.
@geedunk13 It's people like you that make it hard for us honest scanner listeners. A lot of agenices are switching to encrypted communications because of attitudes like yours.
Great video! Even though the RR industry is going to "half spaced" channels; it's not going to happen overnight. Almost all basic analog scanners cover the RR band. I have an old Uniden with all 100 channels dediceted to RR listening. For the people who say "My state doesn't allow scanners in a car" - get a ham radio license. The FCC has ruled that amateur radios (a broad defination) are legal; and that law supercedes all local and state laws!
I've got a couple base/mobil scanners for sale 2 Bearcat 350c and a couple radio shack Pro 2066's anyone in the NY area looking to buy'em cheep send me a message.
hey Lance I have a Uniden BC95XLT handheld scanner I have a 3 or 4 other counties programmed into it and sometimes they pick up well and sometimes they barely pick up and I was wondering if a Diamond RH77CA scanner antenna would help. I talked to a tech the other day and he said they are good antennas w/ good reviews here on the net. Any advice ?? Thanks.
Well I'm not a radio expert but that antenna should perform better than the short little antenna that comes with most handheld UHF scanners. (those antenna's are tunned for the 450 Mhz range). Do a google search for "Traintenna" ... the ideal rail frequency is about 45 inches long (5/8 wave 160-161 Mhz)
Hey Lance I am looking into getting a Uniden handheld scanner and my question to you is will a mobile scanner antenna with a 33 inch whip work with the handheld because I would like to have it in my car sometimes if my son is with me if we should do some railfanning our selves. Any help would be appreciated thank you.
Hello... yes that sounds like a very good choice for a portable setup. Using a magnetic base on the car roof makes it easy to remove and put on. You should get decent range with that...
The one thing that sucks about my Pro82 Radio Shack Scanner is that it doesn't have bands where you can just scan in certain bands like my first scanner had which was a Sportcat 180 Scanner where there was 10 bands that had the capacity for 10 channels in each band.
I just got my copy of the trackside guide in the mail today, thanks for posting the link to the bytown railway society. they are pretty quick in procesing the orders too. I also purchased the same scanner but mine is branded with uniden instead of radio shack
The squelch control is used to separate the static from the radio transmissions. When the squelch is set properly, the radio will remain silent until it picks up a proper radio transmission from another radio. It also allows the radio to scan through many frequencies without confusing static for an actual broadcast.
in some parts of Australia, I have it on good authority that Railcorp are seriously looking into installing a GSM-R system for operation on the CityRail network. This system once installed will not be able to be monitored by a scanner, much like a GSM telephone network.
Add to this the N.S.W. Police will shortly start switching on encryption on their radio network again this will be unable to be monitored on a scanner. Further to this some users on the N.S.W. Government Radio Network are also considering encryption. And if all this news isn't bad enough Motorola have recently announced a commercial TETRA radio network that will replace their existing Smartnet trunked radio networks for commercial users.
What does all this mean, well if you are considering buying the UNIDEN UBCD396T Digital Scanner consider that this unit may be unable to receive future railway radio communications and with it's APCO 25 decode capabilities rendered obsolete if all the GRN users decide to go encrypted (unlikely all users eg SES, State Mail Service, Councils).
In say 5 years the only use a scanner will get is for Airband, local PMR users [shopping centres, pub/club security], trunked LTR networks [if they still exist] and ham radio/CB users.
Similar to my scanner, except I bought mine from The Source. Of course, really, it's the same thing. Great guide though for the newbies. I wish this would have been out about 5 months ago when I first bought the scanner!
