  • CTC means Centralized traffic control

  • Lance I have a Radio Shack PRO-404 scanner. I use it completely for railfanning the CSX and P&L in Florida and Kentucky. Now I got the regular generic antenna. IS there a good antenna that can reach 35 miles thats portable. Now I plan on buying the same model as you, because its probably better. Please help.

  • so are these irrelevant now that there are smartphone apps for this

  • Nonsense

  • Is that digital

  • im using a bcd996xt in nyc i would like to find freight train freqs i no they come threw either nyc or liny

  • So this covers all the CN operations in the US?

  • @miniproductions19

    Yes... it covers those too...

  • Here in the US many states have laws that prohibit scanners in your car that can pick up police frequencies. I know 90% of railfans with scanners violate this law one time or another, but it's good information to know. So if you do have a scanner with you, don't be a douche and be waving it around in plain view, and don't give the police a reason to stop you.

  • u ve got trains in canada? nice

  • Please check out US Scancast for 24/7 live nationwide scanner feeds and chat net!

  • Hey I have that same one but all emer. Services changed to digital in my area, any scanners that are digital?

  • Lance another question is how far can an antenna like that one that came with it reach? how many KM's away? also the Canadian Trackside Guide 2011 is sold out, i can't find where to buy it :(

  • @DieselSmoke92

The original antenna is pretty good... but its designed for the 450 Mhz range so its performance is limited at 160-161 Mhz... I often strategically position myself in areas that are in between or closer to transmission points to improve reception.

  • @LanceCampeau Yeah that would make sence. Hey i posted other comments to it would be nice if i could get reply's so i can figure out what the hell im going to do lol.

  • Great video lance it helped me out alot since i'm trying to figure out the cheapest ways to do so. Is there a Canadian Trackside Guide 2011 out? also how much does it cost in CAD? thanks.

  • Check out US Scancast, nationwide scanner feed / chat network! - Scancast.webs.com

  • its like a copy of the uniden radio?

  • Mobile phones are publicly aired frequencies where court warrants aren't required for eavesdropping. The railroads being tapped by anyone is a good example. Is their a guide that lists local mobile phone frequencies. What fun it would be to listen to the private conversations of friends, family, and neighbors legally!

  • can i get that in uk

  • How much was the schedule

  • Gotta get that guide, the latest version is sold out sadly.

  • Hey Lance my scanner pro 84 is having some problems it will not pick up anything outside of a mile with an after market antenna, do you have any idea what might be going on with this thing.

  • AWESOME video and sunglasses indeed. Thanks for that. Greets from germany

  • great video!

  • I just bought one of these after watching this video. A 170$ expense. Unfortunately i am only able to receive the weather and an airport. I am unable to hear The Police and other emergency officials . I may hold on to this because i am a railfan however there are no trains around me so right now it is an expensive paperweight.

  • can you hear phone conversation ?

  • Lance i might have missed this, but does the scanner also do marine for Great lakes ship spotting...?

  • WHO GIVES A DAM ABOUT THE TRAIN !!

  • could one of the 500 dollar scanners help me run from the cops??

  • @geedunk13 yes i have one

  • @geedunk13 It's people like you that make it hard for us honest scanner listeners. A lot of agenices are switching to encrypted communications because of attitudes like yours.

  • @LonesomeTroubadour

if they all do that I'm sure they will come out with a scanner that can listen in

  • Good stuff. I just picked up my first scanner & yeah what a difference it makes.

  • cant wait for my grecom psr 500 digital!

  • Great video! Even though the RR industry is going to "half spaced" channels; it's not going to happen overnight. Almost all basic analog scanners cover the RR band. I have an old Uniden with all 100 channels dediceted to RR listening. For the people who say "My state doesn't allow scanners in a car" - get a ham radio license. The FCC has ruled that amateur radios (a broad defination) are legal; and that law supercedes all local and state laws!

  • this is nice for when ur street racing

  • I subbed and I do the same thing but in my state you need a permit and I have that...Thom

  • I Have A 1993 radioshack pro-46 20-305 Police Scanner

  • hi, i was wondering what kind of antenna do you have on the roof of your car

  • wich looks better to u the nascar or black i like the nascar

  • foamer...

  • that scanner is very similiar to uniden bearcat... looks like same company, like phillips compared to grundig.

  • Lance Great Video! Well Done..Steve In Trenton!

  • 5:33 its more then EVERYONE NEEDS to know

  • And now they're on sale... 'cause I'm cheap. *ding* (In other words... broke from spending all my money on ugly sunglasses...

  • I hate it when the the connector for the power comes disconnected from the cable.

I'll try to use heat-shrink tubing to keep the cable from coming loose from the adapter to the scanner.

  • Well done video!

  • for people who like GO Transit a lot, get a Digital P25 radio as GO Transit uses Digital P25. i use a BCD396XT

  • @g4tech You cant get a Digital P25. Since it is *Motorola you cannot get a motorola radio unless you have your own company.

CN And All Railways use Motorola.

  • Comment removed

  • @coolguy676 I ment a Digital P25 Scanner not a normal radio, i use mine to scan Go transits P25 system.

  • Hello Lance, do you know wherre I can find the US version of that guide; no reliable frequency sources online. Thanks -Your friend in the US

  • @rustyshackleford1996

Hello, The volume I am refering to is titled "Compendium of American Railroad Radio Frequencies" from Kalmbach Publishing Co.

  • @LanceCampeau hey how can i get police and cordless phones on this

  • It's a BNC connector. Not TNC.

  • canada sucks!

  • where did u get ur scanner?

  • @Flipzsd2

  • thats illegal to do in my state driving around while using a police scanner

  • 161.415 is CN here haha! hey which part of the states do you live? i live in mn.

  • @chaser53pin where in new York?

  • I've got a couple base/mobil scanners for sale 2 Bearcat 350c and a couple radio shack Pro 2066's anyone in the NY area looking to buy'em cheep send me a message.

  • Cont.

    It is the same price

  • I have a two-way radio by motorola, why would you not just buy a good two-way radio for basicaly

  • FOOOOOAMER!!!! hahah just kidding

  • how much is that

  • I paid $50 for a second hand unit

  • ummm, we didn't hear the detector before the train approached. Great review Lance!

  • @Railrodder

That train was coming from the switching yard... it didn't pass over the hotbox detector....

  • ahhhh! Ok, So then it really was a surprise sighting! Thanks Lance!

  • i have the same one.

  • lance ur rock .......

  • are uk police are blocked now dammit i want to live in the usa great vid

  • is there any way around this or anything atall we can listen to im 17 try to find stuff on my dads but i cant find anything anymore

  • So.. are you the asshole that ran infront of the VIA rail train? :P lmfao

  • Yeah... its a fake video but you wouldn't beleve the response it got... there are a LOT of morbid people on YouTube!

  • And you film trains why??? There goes another one...looks like the last one.

  • hey Lance I have a Uniden BC95XLT handheld scanner I have a 3 or 4 other counties programmed into it and sometimes they pick up well and sometimes they barely pick up and I was wondering if a Diamond RH77CA scanner antenna would help. I talked to a tech the other day and he said they are good antennas w/ good reviews here on the net. Any advice ?? Thanks.

  • Well I'm not a radio expert but that antenna should perform better than the short little antenna that comes with most handheld UHF scanners. (those antenna's are tunned for the 450 Mhz range). Do a google search for "Traintenna" ... the ideal rail frequency is about 45 inches long (5/8 wave 160-161 Mhz)

  • approximatly 159 us $

  • y r ur glasses so BIG?

  • oo my radioshack pro 84 :)

  • what is a "hotbox" detector?

  • can you see the tag id on that scanner im thinking about geting one

  • hello

    please teche me

    my scanner is not hear.

how to do please explain me

    please...

  • im going to get one to go get some badies

  • Hey Lance I am looking into getting a Uniden handheld scanner and my question to you is will a mobile scanner antenna with a 33 inch whip work with the handheld because I would like to have it in my car sometimes if my son is with me if we should do some railfanning our selves. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

  • Hello... yes that sounds like a very good choice for a portable setup. Using a magnetic base on the car roof makes it easy to remove and put on. You should get decent range with that...

  • my copy of the Trackside guide 2009 just came in the mail

  • The one thing that sucks about my Pro82 Radio Shack Scanner is that it doesn't have bands where you can just scan in certain bands like my first scanner had which was a Sportcat 180 Scanner where there was 10 bands that had the capacity for 10 channels in each band.

  • I just got my copy of the trackside guide in the mail today, thanks for posting the link to the bytown railway society. they are pretty quick in procesing the orders too. I also purchased the same scanner but mine is branded with uniden instead of radio shack

  • The Uniden scanner is almost exactly the same as my Pro 84

  • the squelch button wats the use for??

  • The squelch control is used to separate the static from the radio transmissions. When the squelch is set properly, the radio will remain silent until it picks up a proper radio transmission from another radio. It also allows the radio to scan through many frequencies without confusing static for an actual broadcast.

  • tks bro i just got me one scaner exactly same as yours and sems to be quiet complicayed tahn i tought

tks for your hep and any other extra info u can share its more than welcome

  • Hi LanceCampeau

in some parts of Australia, I have it on good authority that Railcorp are seriously looking into installing a GSM-R system for operation on the CityRail network. This system once installed will not be able to be monitored by a scanner, much like a GSM telephone network.

  • Add to this the N.S.W. Police will shortly start switching on encryption on their radio network again this will be unable to be monitored on a scanner. Further to this some users on the N.S.W. Government Radio Network are also considering encryption. And if all this news isn't bad enough Motorola have recently announced a commercial TETRA radio network that will replace their existing Smartnet trunked radio networks for commercial users.

  • In say 5 years the only use a scanner will get is for Airband, local PMR users [shopping centres, pub/club security], trunked LTR networks [if they still exist] and ham radio/CB users.
