Oh come on..It was pretty bad down there..they had no water or food for 14 hours, there were about 3 toiletts for thousands of people it was boiling hot and people were passing out..they had to strip their kids because their kids were passing out from the heat..
I found that the media have been disgusting with Eurostar...at the same time you have all those airlines who cancelled their planes and let people sleep on the station's floor,,,while Eurostar was booking Hotel rooms....where are the media coverage in the airport?
If EuroStar is at least partly owned by the French (excuse my ignorance), that would account for such a disparity.
I watched a report of an officer for EuroStar being harangued by journalists after he had supplied food, refreshments and accommodation, and was also curious.
You are joking? Granted they are less sooky than amerikans, but their whinging is without end.
This is a systems failure, a technical hicough, and no-one died. lt becomes an OPPORTUNITY to improve systems and technologies. l won't be here when climate change really hits the UK, US and Europe, but watching these Henny-Pennys indicates that it will be hysterical.
Hi Edna. As you probably know already, the press only tend to air 'extreme' reactions from people as it makes for a more sensational story! :-) No sleep for over 24 hours can obviously affect peoples emotions too. I can give an honest account as I was on the train from Disney with my children and the majority of people behaved calmly and helped those in greatest need. I agree with you that this is an opportunity to improve things and I think these eye witness accounts are part of that process.
Thanks, l must remember about the evils of Murdoch and gutter journalism.
Technically though, not all scenarios can be systems-checked. A lot needs to be done in basic terms as to food, water and medical supplies on board and in the access tunnels - private enterprise cutting corners.
I do maintain though that we ALL need to become more self-reliant and able to cope on ourr own, because I am in a country facing climate change now and no amount of resources can cope with that.
Hi Edna & Merry Christmas! Yes, I do agree to some extent. My comments on Eurostar do not relate to to the fact that the train broke down... These things occasionally happen and I am sure this technical issue will be addressed quickly. However, there appeared to be a complete lack of organisation and communication, which made the situation unecessarily stressful and potentially dangerous. Believe me, we had to be pretty self-reliant on that train, but it should not really have been necessary.
Hello Popstar, I hope things are better for you and your family. Eurostar do need to reassess their response. Organisational and logistical response are critical, but with populations and natural disasters ever increasing, l do think we should also be addressing how we respond individually. I am not talking like a (US) survivalist, but as someone who lives in a country which itself and its neighbours are suffering disasters associated with climate change.
I think the British rail system was privatized by Margaret Thacher in the '80s. If so, this is more likely the result of capitalist cost cutting rather than socialism.
@bipadeebop - That is correct. The US remains one of the few first world countries with a government owned train transport system - their beloved AMTRAK.
Socialist transportation, what a horrible way to get around. I feel sorry for those who were stuck and scared. They have no voice and the Government reaaly can careless. Mass transportation is bad enough but to have this happpen, some people and government officials need to lose there jobs over this ! How unacceptable!!!!
I can't imagine being stuck in the channel tunnel. I took the eurotrain in may of this year and once it entered that tunnel it was so cold. It woke me up rather right away from sleeping. I was leaving from London to Paris. The darkeness was not that bad. However just the thought of being under water mad it worse. But all in all I would take the train again. I most sorry for the little children who were stuck there. I am sure it was very scary for them and not understanding what was going on.
i was on the eurostar just before this all happened, i literally got the last eurostar about 30 mins before it all happened, we got stranded in belgium then trains broke down on the way back again. (just to clarify why it was horrible) there was no food, no water, the toilets were overflowing into the passenger ways, it was freezing cold and they were stuck in complete darkness for 14 hours
Hi. I was on the train with my young children. We were in darkness, deep underground, loud bangs were heard around us, alarms were sounding with no information as to what was happening. It was hot and stuffy, people were vomitting in the carriage. We had no water for 8 hours and no food for 16 hours. Yes mechanical failures can happen...BUT People have a right/duty to complain because of the diabolical way the situation was handled. Until procedures are improved it is a potential deathtrap...
Thank God you and your children and everyone else is OK. This could have easily been a much worse tragedy. I agree -- something needs to be done and those responsible for the breakdown need to be held accountable!
As someone stuck in one of those trains for 7 hours, it sucked, but I've gotten over it. I just wish I had been informed and the entire situation had been handled better. I got more info from my dad in the states when I called him after I got out of the tunnel than I got from the staff. Horribly, HORRIBLY managed.
I ve been stuck in the channel tunnel that night for 5 hours back from disney!!
yes the condition were very difficult
yes there were a lack of information
yes we had no food no water
.... but at least we re all back alive !!!
and something a lot of people are not aware of : what does it look like if we were stuck in the tube in london : it s not secure at all inside the tunnel.. i guess the situation would be worse if it was the case, so people should just stop complaining ! thank you
Give me a beak about the "horrendous" talk.. you were stuck on a train for a day... big whoop, situations like this can be what you make it. Yes, it was inconvenient... but horrendous? Do you have a clue how privileged the life you live is?
Well, overall the Eurostar service in the long view is quite good. Compare it to the crap we have in the USA with their Amtrak service where it is actually typical for trains to be delayed frequently 3 to 4 hours.
I feel for all the passengers. I hope the operator should always keep their trains in good working order. The children and the elderly are the ones who sufferred the most. Good thing they all got back safely.

umm.. first of all why they need a "chunnel" anyway when 1) they're too dumb for doing anything like that and 2) they got along fine for hundreds of years without one?? :| If there's millions of overpopulated english/french/whatever humans who want a chunnel they should advise them all to swim and turn chunnel stattions into a nature reserve.. problem solved.

Wow, it must have been pretty darn bad if the Brits were even crying after getting off the train. They're usually more stoic than anyone else.

And how do you propose "private transportation" over to France and Belgium? Everyone take their private jets?
'Mass transportation' is better than anything you could come up with... there's no other way of leaving the UK without it.
