How many of you know that the Christians transformed the pagan temples into churches & killed a lot of people unwillingly to convert to Christianism ? The best example is maybe the Hungarian King Stephen I who drawned into Danube those ones who refused to convert to Christianism in the year 1000 ! Hagia Sophie should be made a Christian place of religon again. This church was the centre of the Christian world for a thousand years. I find it an insult to see it as a museum. it is silly...it was named Costantinoupoli(constantine's city) or Poli (city) who built agia sofia and the whole byzantium and they now call it istanbul that means "to the city"...even the name means the same...
Several Ionic pillars of Hagia Sophia were taken from the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus(one of the seven wonders of the ancient world which burned down on the night of Alexander's birth). Much stonework was taken from Troy which was used a quarry.

The Sofia Cathedral was locked with people inside, there are witness account that describe the cruelty of the Ottoman Muslims where they raped nuns, took the babies of the Christians, destroying the church interior and desacrating the altar. The Ottomans committed a genocide which the Sultans were able to conceal. How many of you know that the Christians transformed the pagan temples into churches & killed a lot of people unwillingly to convert to Christianism ? The best example is maybe the Hungarian King Stephen I who drawned into Danube those ones who refused to convert to Christianism in the year 1000 ! Transforming isn't quite a crime, but put it down, tha's a CRIME and the Popes aren't totally innocent when it comes to the minds behind this act. Don't hope that Hagia Sophia will be Christian again.

Crime or not, it's still good enough that they didn't put it down as the Austro-Hungarians did in Transylvania after they conquered it. Over 150 monasteries & churches have been burnt & put down by canons just because they were of Christian Orthodox rite. Between 1940-1944 the Hunagrians also destroied Orthodox churches in Transylvania or transformed'em in stable & the the Holy Altar in WC !!! Don't forget that the Turks took control of Constantinople on May 29, 1453, other times...

Istanbul comes from Constantinople (Constantinoupolis in Greek = City of Constantine, Kostantiniyye or İstanbul in Turkish) the name given to the village of Byzantium by Constantin I the Great once he moved the capital of the Roman Empire in the middle of the empire to better control & organize it. Later capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. "Poli" = city & Poleis = cities in Greek.

Hagia Sophie should be made a Christian place of religon again. This church was the centre of the Christian world for a thousand years. I find it an insult to see it as a museum. I am tolerant of all religons but if Europe freely allows Mosques to be built in its borders then the Hagia Sophia should be returned to allow Christian worship there. I do not see this to be a unreasonable request for Turkey.

It is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest buildings of the world and sometimes considered the Eighth Wonder of the World. Its conquest by the Ottomans at the fall of Constantinople is considered one of the great tragedies of Christianity by the Greek Orthodox faithful.

What i mean is, don't try to understand a religion by its followers. Get a Kuran or Bible, whatever, and see how YOU understand it in the way of acting and behaving.

@mouhdie also, what i read about this is, Fatih Sultan Mehmed (Fatih The Conqueror), enters the Hagia Sophia on this horse right after the conquest of Istanbul. He takes a look around, and says with no hasitation: "We're keeping this place."
He could have it demolished, right? =) It would be a bigger victory. This behavior is a way of appreciating the Christianity of Anatolia and Istanbul in my opinion. And also some other stuff.

Konstantin-iye was Constantinople in Ottoman meaning place of Constantine, but the original Ottoman name for this town is DERSAADET. Anyway Istanbul was more commonly used among the people, maybe because its easier and faster to pronounce. When you say the name you almost dont say the first character, like _Stanbul.

For some reason, God (the Holy Trinity) allowed Constantinople to fall to the godless Muslims. There is a tradition that before the world ends the Divine Liturgy, which was stopped when the church was taken over, will be completed. "Force of Arms" is a completely legitimate way of transferring ownership of territory,treasure and artifacts etc, even when good guys lose. Just ask the Americans they are experts on "Force of Arms". The Hagia Sophia belongs rightfully to the Turkish Government and therefore they are under no moral obligations.
