This is one of the best, most beautiful, and most gruesome, of the "land" genre cartoons I've ever seen. Nothing redeems that pincushion man, not even an implicit sense of humor. Too bad he didn't get that little idiot kid.
Wonder if some enterprising independent film student will ever make a sequel? This drug-induced cartoon is just crying out for it. Bring Back The Pincushion Man!
not that weird. they used to play old cartoons like this on late night TV I think. my parents recorded a bunch on vhs for me and my brother to watch. no idea why cause this shits creepy!!
@JamesStarkweather is the ground made of balloons? or were just the people and the city and the trees? they dont really show the ground to move like a balloon. he does pop a rock when he first pops up
When my boys were little ( 24yrs, 21yrs and 12yrs old now) this was one of their favorites cartoons!. If fact I love this funny cartoon. Classic, true classic!
This cartoon scared the sh!t out of me as a Kid. I was perhaps overly perceptive to the fact that the murdered balloon people weren't coming back. Still good memories. My gf didn't believe that a cartoon as I described exist, now she does, thanks uploader!
Fans of the original Pee-Wee Herman Show know this cartoon all too well, as it was the cartoon the King of Cartoons showed in that version. Pee-Wee's Broadway show replaced Balloon Land with a Penny cartoon, which was stupid to do so. IMHO, if the Broadway show kept Mr. Bungle, they should have kept Balloon Land. But then again, that's just me opinionating.
The voice of pincushion man was the voice of veteran voiceover man Billy Bletcher. You may recognize him as the voice of Pete from the old Disney cartoons
Search youtube for Chip & Dale 1954 The Lone Chipmunks for a classic example.
OMG found this and we had it way back but in black and white, Think I am my sisters /brother were also tramitized by the pincushion man but we always watched it every time my dad got out those old black and white home movies. Thanks for the fun memory
I was traumatized by the Pincushion Man! For years all I remembered was how the pincushion man walked, and sometimes I would see him and it would be in my nightmares. Finally found the source of my trauma.
Which of them misc. Cartoon Collections on DVDs that have either selections of 150, 200, 300, or even 600 cartoons have this Balloon Land cartoon on their selections? This along with many other classic cartoons I'd like to own on DVD. Ones that were not from WB, Disney, MGM, Paramount, or from any other major movie studio.
I remember this cartoon was shown on both that HBO Special; The Pee-Wee Herman Show and that CBS Saturday Morning kids show; Pee-Wee's Playhouse, back in the 80s.
I saw this for the first time back in the '80s. Still just as funny now as it was then. Lighten up people! This is fantasy, not reality. Plus, the bad guy gets it in the end.
Yes!!! I Had This Movie On A Vhs tape along with other old cartoons like this one and I couldn't find the tape! Thanks For The Upload! Good to see this again! :D
Amazing, my father had this movie on 8mm movie when I was a kid, 40+ years ago. I don't remember it, but my younger sister does. Scary stuff when you're a kid
We really need to put the creepy back into animated films. Pixar's cool but think how much better the movies could be with unexplained LSD trip musical numbers
i loved these kinda cartoons as a kid...just wondering if there was a mixture of these short cartoons made onto one VHS?? i remember also watching a jack frost one with a little bear, aladdin and the magical lamp and there are a few others icant really remember...man its good to watch this, brings back memories.
The beginning theme is called 'Buffoon', which was originally a piano novelty tune by Zez Confrey in 1931. This version is possibly performed by Nat Shilkret. Sadly, both are uncredited. An orchestral version by the Hofstad Youth Orchestra Association (Vereniging Hofstads JeugdOrkest) can be viewed here -- /watch?v=3avD7Md0VyM -- and briefly by ragtime pianist Frederick Hodges here -- /watch?v=Rf2leusklzk#t=6m20s
I just noticed something. In one or two scenes in which the pincushion man confronts the children, he grabs onto the big spike (that sticks out of his cushion) like he's groping his dick. THE PINCUSHION MAN IS A PERVERT, AND QUITE POSSIBLY A CHILD MOLESTOR.
It sounds vaguely like a Raggedy Ann cartoon, R Ann is pining away for R Andy, who'd wandered off with a pretty Spanish doll, but he returns in time for them to both get properly named.
There's another cartoon about a little blind girl who find R Ann and learns to "see with her heart", ie the sounds in her neighborhood, hope this helps.
The Pincushion man is a mu$lim, always doing the bidding of evil to his own fellow countrymen & co-religioni$t$ as well as innocent, good people all over the planet, & on every continent. 1300 years of darkness & oppression will come to a crashing halt, very soon. The INTERNET will be the hero bringing it about. Go 2 faith freedom daught ohhrge & see the truth.
They should remake this but a live action movie where people aren't balloons. The Pincushion Man could be the name of the villain in a live action full length film remake and he's popping not just balloons but bubbles blown by people as they are chewing bubble gum.
Added this to my 1935 playlist, one of 120 music playlists that let you relive the sounds of any year from today back to the 1880s as if you were there.
