Still my favorite song of all time. If I could live in any era of music, it'd be this one. It disgusts me how the music of my generation is today. Most lack the soul, the class, and the talent of what used to be great music.
Thinking Bobby Darrin couldn't handle A Nightingale Sang is like thinking God couldn't handle the creation of woman. Bobby Darrin could handle almost ANY song. Time wise I guess I can understand how they might have doubted this in 63. But he sure proved them wrong. Unfortunately we'll never know, but had he lived, I honestly think he would have rivaled Sinatra. He was(and is) that good! Thanks for posting.
@Dday21Mom Amen, aye men.........BD was the whole entire complete package. Thankfully we have youtube to prove his genius and his talent. Always and forever !
Bobby Darin was a wonderful singer and a great talent. He was also a good actor, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He died at the age of 37 and all his fans were devastated, as I was. Luckily, there is a rich catalogue of his wonderful music.
@4bawbees You mean its not from TNT's Sir Charles? that's Terrible. If I remember correctly from undergrad philosophy, the California Bay Area University town was named after the 18th Century Irish/British philosopher George Berkeley, but I don't think the London Square was. Still, this song always reminds me of the philosopher, because I came across it about the same time we covered him in class. I think I first heard Nat King Cole's version, but for me Darin and Billy May's is best of all
@ecapital46 Nope it's all about a night out in London. The lyric goes 'there were angels dining at The Ritz (five star hotel on Piccadilly, nearby) and a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square (a wooded square in London's smart Mayfair area)
I love this song when Nat King Cole sang it..it's one of my faves. My man, Bobby, however, puts quite a swing on it with his rendition. Bobby's is soo great!
Talent. A voice so smooth and the best entertainer ever. Look up above late one night. See the most shiny star? That's Bobby Darin. He'll shine for always.
When I think of Bobby Darin I think of words like debonair and class. He died far too young, but his music will still be played a hundred years from now and people who hear it then will recognize his greatness.
No surprise about your take on Bobby. He was an OUTSTANDING standards singer. He picked the right key, tempo and arrangement for all his songs. Even the most obscure songs from the bottom of the list he could bring to life and make fresh. THAT, my French compadre, is talent.
It was late one evening in Manchester, my girlfriend asked me to dance in the middle of Manchester with this song playing from her car CD player, it was about midnight, and lots of people walking past, we have a slow dance in the middle of the street after 10 seconds, I forgot all about people watching , it was one of the most romantic moments of my life, when it was over there was about 100 people crowded round and they all applauded and cheered, thank you to the lovely Black beauty xxxxxx
A great talent and he loved all music. He never had the hiccup at the end of the notes like lesser singers have. When I was a kid I heard 18 Yellow roses. My dad bought it for me. I need to buy a box set of him. True cool guy and a great musician. Into civil rights as all musicians should be. And all of us should be.
You are so welcome diegotirrat, I am very sad that Bobby's life had to end too soon The man was truly a great legend! I want to thank Scout4Me1 for posting some of Bobby's great songs.
You are quite welcome Scout4Me1! . As a band leader and an arranger, I get a chance to play all of these great songs. I hope that I helped you as well!. You might want to try to find the version of this song by Brian Setzer!. It sounds great!.
You hit right on the head diegotirrat! The song was written by Sherwin/Maschwitz. It was arranged by Billy May, and the orchestra was conducted by Billy May. I heard the sounds of the saxes which was a giveaway of the great Billy May sound. The song was done on September 4th 1962. My big band has this arrangement, and I played quite often with one on my vocalists. The people love it. I hope that this helped you!
Yes, Darin does this song as well as any good jazz singer. Billy May? I`m not sure. I got the song from a compilation CD. It`s good that you are a jazz fan!

Very few times do you ever see a song on You Tube with zero dislikes. Guess that says a lot about Bobby.
