You forgot the nightmare scenareo where Obama gets elected and tells NASA's director that the primary mission of NASA is Muslim outreach to let them know how much their scientific contributions have helped our world. Unfortunately that list is very small and only in the far history.
B-52's have operated for over 50 years under far worse conditions than the orbiters. Their airframes are in immaculate condition...and there is still no other vehicle in the owrld that can match their payload capacity. At the end of the program the program was flying at record levels. The Bush VSE, was a reaction to the Columbia disaster, but contained provisions for the recertification of the space frame in the event it was necessary.
You could have chosen something else to display your special effects... This is disrespectful to the Shuttle program, the Astronauts, and families that did loose their lives.
Husky Maxx is right, but he omits the fact that while the shuttle did retire on Obama's watch per the Bush Administration plans, Obama canceled the entire "next phase" of American space effectively taking the United States out of the manned space flight business...
Pretty good CG work here. The scary thing is that a couple of these did happen. One mission did have a window chipped due to a debris impact. Columbia broke up on Reentry and likely would've had a landing gear failure had it survived. And Challenger would have exploded on the pad had the SRB leak not be temporarily plugged.

Was cool and impressed with the skills displayed in this video, but the direct CAPCOM cut from Colombia disaster soured it all a bit with the sad realities that lurk about the history of the shuttle program.

@HuskyMaxx I think the biggest problem ist that there is no real competition like it was in the cold war. In these times they studied hard on ney space crafts just to be better than the other one. But I´m sure that this will change soon ( there the Chinese ;) Hopefully the US (or the ESA or both together if you will) should send Astronauts to the Mars before the Chinese do :D

I was in the morning meetings every single day from Obama's election through the assembly of the last flight hardware when as we desperately hoped for some common sense. I built the Ares I-X prototype and took it apart when returned.....in comparison to the first Falcon IX launch from which nothing but pieces was recovered, it was a complete success!

The SPOC prime contractor, United Space Alliance, proposed operating two orbiters as a contingency for resupplying the ISS. Didn't know that did you? Of course it was rejected.

@divedevil985 If you had ever experienced the environment the shuttles were processed in (humidity and temperature controlled) and the thoroughness of the processing flow to inspect the spaceframe you would know the immaculate condition of the structure. Ever been inside the wing structure of an orbiter? I have...and it was like new off the showroom floor.
I wouldn't call these realistic. Like, at all... For instance, I can't imagine any scenarios where most of that damage would occur. Also, the external tank leaking liquid? If anything, it'd explode from being punctured considering it's a giant tank of highly pressurized gas.

And the external tank wouldn't explode without a spark to set it off. When Challenger blew, it was a spark that occurred when the SRB swiveled and struck the external tank that caused the breakup of the orbiter itself.
@Marty933 But most large debris (I think >the size of a baseball, been a while since I researched it) in LEO is tracked with a safety envelope around the spacecraft. As for explode, I didn't mean combust to a fireball. Challenger didn't blow up, but rather disintegrated from off-nominal aerodynamic loads from the SRB swiveling and from the SRB damaging the structure of the ET. Puncturing a pressurized pressure vessel would cause an explosion as the gas escaped out.
@Marty933 Wrong...the srb cut a hole in the tank with the leak escaping at the aft segment. The damage to the tank caused a structural failure when the shutlle was under tremendous aerodynamic loads...literally ripping it apart.
