Interesting you should describe Merzbow as extreme. I've always thought he could be harsh, from time to time, but compared to some of the artists who actively try to damage their audience's hearing during shows, I find his music very soothing, and more of an ambient inclination than some harsh/extreme noise can be. Then again, I've only heard 5-6 of his albums, so I might not be the most informed individual to be speaking on this matter :p

Aube did that sort of thing with water apparently. I only know so much about his works and Japnoise in general so I can't say for sure. I can tell you, though, that there's plenty of noise artists who use incidental music i.e. field recordings, radios, etc. Personally, I love both methods, but I wish I could learn what Masonna uses as far as more "professional" tech/equiptment goes as only using incidental sound gets kind of cheap after a while.
