  • Wow, I agree with hotdog... However some things I could do without "here sir, let me light that cigar for you on this plane full of people..." Although I'm old enough that I remember planes having a smoking section.

  • Ladies and gents the A380 has landed.

  • What hurt Pan Am was a series of in flight terrorist events. And then Lockerbie. Their logo got shown over and over again with the wreckage. People began to associate the logo of Pan Am with that horrible event and their decline was sealed. Sigh.

  • @Tinkbelle100

    Some people say:

Selling of asian roots to united

    Delta got Euro Roots

    Juan Trippe leaving

Crappy management/ workers had to do all the work

    747

blah blah blah. I sorry, non of the legacy airlines kept any class. lets hope one day it could get back.

  • @lupe045 thanks for understanding where I'm coming from. Other commenters here simply don't seem to get it. Maybe because they're used to things as they are today with no proper reference point. Maybe because they're brainwashed by the media. I don't really know.

  • pan ammmm

  • That was from a time when only the "elite" could afford to fly. No such thing as a $99 flight or travel deal sites. You had to pay for the experience, but that is exactly what it was. It is still available if you are willing to spend the cash. You get what you pay for, no matter what year it is.

  • those were times when being a flight attendant was REALLY worth it.. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Back then non-white people had to sit in the back of the airplanes in the no frills section, today we call it coach.

That video was filmed in a plane on the ground, no plane ride is that smooth :p

  • Ahh, a time when airline food didn't kill people.

  • there were a good handful of "classy" people and "trashy" people back then as it is now.

  • Their, not "there"

  • Powder rooms? is the the same as charlie rooms?

  • This was before London was known as Londonistan.

  • I agree with lupe045's comment below. There's nothing left I can add.

  • alspry You took the words right out of my mouth. In the late 50s and early 60s some people wore ties when the rode on a Greyhound bus, and everyone dressed like they had respect for themselves and each other.

It's a shame what's happened to America. She lost her class and dignity.

  • Dont you think pilots all sound the same? o.O weird..

  • Is the narrator also the voice of the pilot?

  • i thought this was the pan am tv series. :)

  • Ha Ha!! The guy smoking at 2:35....Love It!!!

  • today flying isnt what it was in the 1960s... it was cool, glamoures and you were able to buy a live insurance at the airport :)

  • The unions are what protected the employees from ruthless management who did not care how many hours you worked. The people were friendly because mangement took care of them. Happy employees make for happy customers. If the emplyee comes first, then the customers will notice that and be well taken care of. Who wants to work hard for a boss that you hate or wants to exploit you? When airline business CEOs figure this out, they will make money WITH unions --(see Southwest Airlines).

  • I agree on the price comment, but why was the service, a.k.a. friendliness, so much better then? Hmmm....could it be no unions then to protect the people who don't care?

  • I was 6 years old when I flew Pan Am to France with my aunt and uncle. First Class (Clipper Class they called it.) They were regal, and elegant. :)

  • Ya, i remember this in the 1980s. Now it's beef or chicken :)

  • Flying was reserved for the well-off on those days. A round trip ticket from L.A. to New York in 1960 on the new B707 was $1,100.00 or $11,000.00 in today's dollars.

  • Well, the travail has definitely been put back into travel. Now we have seats designed for The Seven Dwarves, you had better not spend any more than 5 minutes in the outhouse-sized bathroom unless you want to be labeled "suspicious" and you're lucky if you get more than one packet of snack mix on a four hour flight. And then you have those disruptive fellow passengers, some who cannot be bothered to even wash. Fun!

  • It was a magical time. People had class back then. I don't know what happened to this country. I wish I would have been born in the 1920's or 1930's so that I might have been able to enjoy American at it's peak instead of it's decline.

  • @alspry

if you were flying in the 1930's you probably wouldn't have been able to afford it since flying was pretty only for the rick in those days.

  • @alspry I agree, they were so classy

  • @alspry What happened to this country? nothing that wasn't our own doing. The decline of airline service is in direct response to our demands as consumers. We wanted cheaper flights so the airlines had to axe costs, which included the type of service you see in this video. But now flying is accessible to much greater portions of the population. In addition, flying is 300 percent safer today than it was in the 50s, check the NTSB website for verification. America's decline? hardly.

  • @alspry You don't know what you're talking about. If you would have been born back then, then you'd be wanting to have been born 70, 80 years earlier and saying the same thing about those times that you're saying about today. There is always class. You just don't know where to find it.

  • @alspry Don't forget that back in those days flying was only for the super-wealthy. These people were all members of the upper class.

  • @alspry probably would be better off in the 40's. i'm not too sure how pleasant it would be growing up in the depression

  • @alspry You mean enjoy WW2 and subsequently living under a constant threat of nuclear armageddon?

  • Definitely not Ryanair :D

  • @JJDublinIreland definitely not even close to that pricing either :D

  • wow! nobody is wearing flip flops, wife beaters, ripped jeans! nobody is picking their nose, clipping their nails, yapping on their phones. nobody is bringing everything they own onboard and expect a stewardess to find a place for it. i would love to bring this golden era of flying back, but if you do the math, and the airlines kept up with inflation, and fuel prices. then only the rich, as in thei video could fly. you get what you pay for. blame the CEO's for bad service, not the crew!

  • OMG there is a time difference between Los Angeles and London, England? :O

  • Those days, air flight was way better!

  • powder rooms, smoking lounges, everyone dressed nicely those where the days

  • It looks exactly like the TV show!!

  • Wow if only flying were ANYTHING like this today. Today airline service is about on par with going Greyhound.

  • the husband @ 2:15 is hot!

  • @britneysbigbush Yeah the way he looks at her and cocks his eyebrow, it's as if he were saying "hey baby, how about some action now that you've got that blanket?"

  • I guess all the black people had to go to the back of the plane

  • Ah the good ole' days.

  • OK, airport food was never that good.

  • Funny to see smoking allowed on planes. I don't miss that one bit. Flying changed when low cost airline like Southwest came aboard. The old days of service were changed. No more luxury but you saved a lot of money on your airfare.

  • Oh, how things have changed!

  • I remember those coach class lounges, where 4 people could it around a table and play cards. (That flight would have been abourt 1975) On my first plane ride in the 1960's I remember how everyone dressed up for it. It really was special.

  • Travel in the 60s and 70s (and early 80s) was totally different. It was actually FUN, and the stewardesses were happy. No politically correct nonsense.

It was expensive, and we loved it.

As a boy, I remember every flight.

I had many a crush on the hot stewardesses.

These days, the best looking ones are gay.

Most of the women are so fat, their butts hit you when they go up and down the aisle.

BRING BACK THE SCALE!LET YOUNG WOMEN BECOME STEWARDESSES AGAIN.

The only thing NOT to bring back - smoking!

  • Funny thing is, it costs me $900 to get from Vancouver to Canada, but we still receive "modern" service (or lack thereof). All the money with none of the luxury. You want to fly first class on Air Canada on a flight longer than 3 hours? You're looking at $2500 or more.

  • OMG REAL FOOD!!!

  • I am very fortunate to remember the first class service and all of the amenities when I first started flying for business in the late 70's. The food, ambiance, atmosphere and attention to detail were outstanding. Your flight crew bent over backwards to accommodate you at every level. Unfortunately, deregulation had the effect of turning air travel into a very unpleasant event, complete with every and any complaint all travelers are still reeling about today. It's a total shame!

  • I had the opportunity to fly this airline back in the early 70s. Back then flying was all about class and you got what yu paid for.

  • services back in the day are ten times better than they are now. i wish i lived back in that time period. thumbs up!

  • "In 1974 the cheapest round-trip New York-Los Angeles flight (in inflation-adjusted dollars) that regulators would allow: $1,442. Today one can fly that same route for $268"

Yeah, I still want government to control prices cause I don't wanna sit next to smelly poor people and I want lobster instead of peanuts for snacks.

  • @lucasboden Of course, now you just feel like you're riding a bus for under $300.

  • Luv that!!!♥ Amazing Service

  • Luv that!!!♥

  • now that was service

  • Very nice video. I've not flown since 1985. No need, no real desire, but I still remember my first air trips in the 70s..and even then they were still pleasant in comparsion to the horror stories I hear about air travel nowadays

  • Very nice video. I've not flown since 1985. No need, no real desire, but I still remember my first air trips in the 70s..and even then they were still pleasant compared to the horror stories I hear now.

  • Great video! I once flew on a TWA Lockheed Martin L-1011 from Las Vegas to New York City back in the eighties--it was an excellent airline at the time, with good food, service.

God, I wish could've flown Pan Am. I was old enough to remember the Pan Am building and everything.

It's too bad America had to fuck up air travel for everyone through deregulation and 9/11/01.

  • My goodness, what a great time that was. Yes, it was more expensive but I usually fly first class now and it's not nearly as nice as what it used to be.Good American People are smoking and drinking and having a wonderful time. Notice there are no muslims on the film. Back then they didn't even know what a jet was. Too bad it didn't remain that way. Everything that has deteriorated is because of them. I just hope it will return to "The Friendly Skies" in my lifetime.

  • My grandfather worked for Pam Am. I wish I could have saved the Pan Am bags we had back then. I bought a Pan Am T Shirt from the Air and Space Museum in DC last year.

  • i heard a lot of bad things happened

  • i am a stewardess for united airlines. with our merger with continental, we are now upgrading their passengers left and right. leaving us loyal employees to be stuck in coach, or at the gate! welcome to travel 2011!

  • @justjack78 OH boo hoo. It's called welcome to non-revenue/reduced rate travel. It was the same way with us at Northwest and Continental. It's the same way with friends at Delta, American, Southwest and any other airline. You can be loyal but when you travel on a nonrev status you know it's waitlist.

  • @86SuperiorBuick listen you ass! i've been flying longer then you have been alive! i know all about non rev! until this merger we "united" were not bumped down to coach due to free upgrades! also, we weren't bumped by passengers coming up to the gate at the last minute to get on the flight!

  • @justjack78 And it's this kind of attitude from some flight attendants at United is the reason I will not fly United. I think Continental got the short end to get roped in with the likes of United. Get with the times! Things change, get used to it or get out.

  • @86SuperiorBuick good. we don't need white trash punks like you! as far as getting the short end of the stick, just keep your mouth shut as you have no idea what the hell you are talking about! you are a 27 year old punk who needs to stay in your trailer park and continue to have sex with your cousins!

  • Comment removed

  • @justjack78 Actually, with your grasp of the American language, it is you who seems to be the white trash. And as far as being a 27 year old punk, I'm 27 and I am a first officer on the 737 for American out of DFW. So yeah.....I believe I know what I'm talking about.

  • @justjack78 I have a question for a stewardess... Why do you not serve meals anymore?

  • Pan Am brought my family to America in 1967, and we flew them frequently.

People were different then.Passengers dressed up to travel, stewardesses were polite and 'happy', and good looking of course. They should still use scales. Some of the stewardesses today hit both sides of the aisle with their butts.

I remember the cologne bottles in the bathrooms, being allowed to sit in the Captain's chair as a lad, stopping in Winnipeg Canada to refuel as we went over the North Pole, the food, the cigars...

  • I hope it's draft free

  • The Pan AM Show brought me here.

  • I flew for Pan Am for twelve years and have been blogging on ChezGigi.com about my memories. I looked for the glamor in the downstairs galley of the DC-10, when we did cook for people, but never found it. Had fun anyway! Pan Am And The Downstairs Galley-

  • Oh yes, those were the heady days of flying. The Boeing 707s of TWA and PANAM were the ultimate in luxury. Just look at all those handsome men and pretty women in the cabin. Hey! But where are the Blacks?! I'm sure many 'nigger' celebrities did fly but they never appeared in any promotional ads for these two major airlines. Flying was strictly for the superior White man. The blackies , the brownies, the yellows could go to hell!

  • I remember when flying was so glamorous and exciting that my mother would have four orgasms on the way to the airport. Today you are lucky if anyone even clears their throat!

  • OMG, more comments about how you don't get meals and people used to dress up. Well, that was about 50 years ago. It's not coming back. In fact I am pretty sure that most folks who flew as adults back in that era are even around anymore.

  • What concerns me is, for every One Thousand lives lost in Airline Crashes. The companies make Billons of Bucks. So what if we pay out a few million in compansation to family and crew.Who have lost their lives.Pilots,Airline Attendance and passengers we are all expendable. When I fly.The Pilots and the Flight Attendance are my Mom and Dad..The Passangers with me are my Brothers and Sister. So please get us home safe.Mister and Misses Airline Company.

  • Two things:

In flight meals? Wow, what a concept! Now you're lucky if you're thrown bag of peanuts.

I love how people used to dress up while traveling. Now, if the weather is warm, you're most likely have to sit next to some guy wearing filthy cut off jeans, a tank top exposing his nasty smelling armpits and over flowing rubber thongs on his feet.

  • Smoking on an airplane? Awesome!

  • In 1958, didn't America have minorities then, or were they not allowed to travel or work on airplanes? I remember air travel in the 1960s before deregulation and the twin aisle cattle cars. Totally different from what it is today. Now you get on a plane and you have to put up with trailer trash, uneducated scuzzy people, etc. Very putrid these days. And on top of it, the flight attendants are rude and hostile to the passengers even though the passengers are paying their salaries.

  • This takes me back. I was an 'airline brat' dad was a mechanic for Braniff- we always got moved to first class and it was wonderful! I remember being asked 'smoking or non smoking' when selecting your seat too! I recall the china and crystal and great food and drink. Braniff had little cappucino black and white china cups that they would serve after dinner with a shot of some booze in it that was a thrill for an underage 16 yr old trying pass as a sophisticated grown up!

    Thanks for the video!

  • In this day and age, nice to see good food served and the flight atendant lighint up your cigarette.. Those days are long gone. I am not that old but remember the "old" Midway airport, just drive up and leave your car with the passengers until they get ticketed, or else wait for them getting baggage..., that was 1980's or before

    ..

  • i find it funny how you people want this kind of service but aren't willing to pay for it.

  • @0neofthem I'm willing to pay for it, but not the level of first class. Certainly an extra 20 bucks to fly from ORD to BOS would buy a small meal and a hotter stewardess.

  • Growing up in the 80s, i flew on Air Canada's DC-9-30s planes, and the captain said we were going over 560MPH, which was cool enough, i remember the hot meals, the good service, and good FOOD! it was not like a Swanson's Dinner, it was quality cooked food! I stil have my ticket from 1986. OK Dinner & OK Lunch!!!

  • The problem with cheap air fares is that it allows the dregs of society to travel in a domain that was once reserved for upper middle class on up.

  • People, the good all luxurious days are not over.

If you want something like this, charter a Private jet. It's expensive but so did flying back then ;)

  • why the hell arent airplane's like that now!?!?! 9-11 made all the stupid people paranoid

  • This is one damn classic plane! Although the plane is giving out black smoke, it is a big breakthrough of Boeing shit! I love that!

  • One thing they could not perceive, was metal fatigue. And how many of thoes people lost their lives. In mid air explosions

  • @thecrew221 You might be thinking of some other aircraft. No Boeing 707 ever broke up mid flight due to metal fatigue.

  • Wow, smoking on and airplane

  • A Luxury airline can be made if the H.N.W.I.s want one

being one class cabins with all 1st class seats with all

the luxuries of the old days.

A H.N.W.I. is upper middle class being someone worth

$1. Million or more about 10 million people are that in U.S.A.

A U.H.N.W.I. is the upper class worth $30. Million or more

about 95,000. worldwide, including 1,200. billionaires worldwide.

Yes a airline can be made for the upper middle class who want

the luxuries but they will pay for it.

  • I like these ads . I started as a mechanic for TWA in 1989 . Things have really changed over the years, people were a lot more decent to one antother in the old days. It was always more than a job to me....

  • I like these ads . I started as a mechanic for TWA in 1989 . Things have really changed over the years . People were a lot more decent to one antother in the old days. It was always more than a job to me....

  • Now I know why my grandfather always wears a suit when he flies. Always wondered about that, but now I guess it makes sense.

  • Ahhhh........ nothing tastes better than a nice fag during the flight.......ahhhhhhhhhh

  • add Jet Blue tv's and I would buy a ticket in 5 seconds

  • holy shit the bathrooms are big

  • I wish i was around in these days gosh would i wouldn't give to fly TWA or Pan Am....

  • People forget they not only did they start ,"the jet age.(Brits failed with the Comet)" Boeing built the intercontinental 707 and took a gamble on the 747 with Pan Am financing. Had the 747, failed Boeing would have gone under. Juan Trippe(CEO),was an ignored visionary. I flew them all over the world in my late 20's to mid 30's. I ignored college, however, everyone, that sat next to me said I wish I would have done that when I was young! From London to Rio I donated DNA shakes all over the globe!

  • We can thank ourselves for crummy airline service today. We all shop for the cheapest fare.... right? ;)

  • Enjoying taking the plane.. I just can't imagine it..

  • Everyone that's complaining must domestic Americans passengers...because most American air carriers suck.

Fly first class on Singapore Airlines, Asiana Airlines, or Korean Airlines and you'll think the people on this video were flying cargo class.

  • The service looks so amazing. Nowadays the flight attendant throws a miniature bag of pretzels in your face and you don't see them for the remainder of the flight. How times have changed...

  • Smelly ethnics!?! That's a racist, elitist comment if I ever heard one! It is a blessing that a wider range of people can now afford to travel and explore the world so as to reduce the limited perspectives of folk. That said, the spacious travel days of old are sorely missed, where we seek whatever form of comfort we can with the more relaxed attire. I do however wish people would learn flying etiquette. But I would much rather have the current prices than the ones from the 60's.

  • i flew pan am once (istanbul to jfk 1/1/87) great flight / airline.

  • This puts modern day first class to shame.

  • Looks more like an upscale hotel lounge and dining room than a plane...

  • My God, these comments are depressing! You get to watch a classic piece of aviation history and this conversation is the best you can do? Moaning and complaining and insulting each other -- much of the problem with air travel now is how rude the passengers are, and this is a perfect illustration. We've got a few trips planned this year and I have one request for many of you (and you know who you are): please stay home. At the very least, stay in the back and leave us alone in 1st class.

  • @indy2001A Yes, I completely agree with you. I was a Flight Service Manager for 30+ years and across that entire time it was always the crass behaviour of a few customers who spoilt it for the majority. Fortunately, in later years we were able to call the Police to the aircraft and many passengers were simply arrested on the spot. Failure to comply with an instruction of a Flight Attendant was sufficient to have these sad social losers taken to task.

  • @indy2001A

There is a lot of truth in what you say. I am old enough to remember a flight in the 50s where we all dressed up. Every male had on a suit and every woman was well made up, in a dress. It is almost gross what people wear and do out in public today. This does not excuse the other issues with flying but I'll tell you one thing, I thank my lucky stars that I was able to retire and not have to fly anymore.

  • @indy2001A HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @indy2001A

I think we are all on the same page. Whose ever fault it is, things are different now. So much so that I haven't flown in about 5 years. Now that I am retired, not going through that hell anymore.

  • NO SMOKEING ON 2:30

  • fuel was like 10 cents a gallon back then, they could afford to take care of you

  • Don't treat me as some mcdonald jerk - but if You want to use technology it must be cheap for most people. I love planes, even flying. Flying is still glamorous - so many can now fly and enjoy it.

If You want luxuries - they still are there! Even if not on usual planes board, You could charter/buy luxury planes - number of private jets is rising around the world. Full gold interior? No problem - just pay for it :-)

  • @nrepeb Flying is not glamorous any longer. You are about 30 years too late. Once the Walmart crowd started flying, the experience became akin to a cattle car.

  • You all are joking? The fly have to be cheapest as possible. Firstly most of people just want to get from point A to point B. Secondly the most bad side is fuel. The only way to solve is to make electric jets (small electric civilian planes are flying safetely now!). Third - having a Ferrari is better than most of cheap cars from our roads - but if we buy Ferrari most of us want have money for anything else, even the bank could not give a credit for it.

  • Smoking on the plane lol

  • I love it how everyone wishes that this would be the way flying is. Many people tend to forget that it was also much more expensive to fly those days, especially with the luxuries. Sure, it would be nice to have those same luxuries for everyone, but not everyone wants to pay an arm and a leg. Deregulation gave the consumer what they wanted: affordable air travel. The loss of glamor and increased hassle is a direct result of deregulation. The only people you have to blame are yourselves.

  • @mikeydapilot

That can be easily solved, those who want the air travel of the old

days can have it by having a VIP airline for H.N.W.I. who will travel

in all 1st class cabins with all the luxuries of the old days.

    That can be done.

  • @The391956 Eh, even that is risky. You're basically talking about private air travel, which is just recovering from a hard blow due to the financial crisis. The crisis proved that business travel is expendable and, if necessary, the business travelers will travel in coach like everyone else. Some airlines have also tried all business class cabins, but that strategy has only been successful on certain routes (i.e NYC-LAX, NYC-London, etc.). The fact remains that most people want cheap travel.

  • That looks fun haha. Today they treat you like crap.

  • what a classic find .. The world's first •successful• jetliner .. It would be a further 11 years before the 747 reached the same airline, also 11 years to the first Airbus, the A300, and the Douglas Commercial No-10 (DC-10), and Lockheed's first jetliner, the L-1011 Tristar -- certainly an exciting time in jet transportation

  • Just look at all the happy white people !

  • "Powder rooms" are excellent for Mile High Club initiations.

  • 1959. The service, food, and general flying experience was second to none... Wish they'd ditch today's overhead bins in favor of overhead racks or nothing at all -- check the damn luggage and get the roomier interiors back.

And to top it off, the 2010 passenger it seems is either wearing a ratty printed t-shirt, pajama bottoms, or flip flops. Basically the flying public today looks like a reject list from Barnum & Bailey.

  • Did the guy actually light a cigarette on board the plane?

  • @trinmaav No, the stewardess lit it for him. Which is even more unbelievable.

  • @trinmaav people used to smoke in hospitals back then..

  • @trinmaav Until the 1990s smoking was commonplace on flights...

  • now it is...hurry up....shut up...sit down...seat belt....you may die...stay in it...

  • visit my pan am channel with all great videos about pan am on you tube

  • I just wish the airliners went back to quality instead of quantity (pay attention Ryanair lol)

  • I'll keep this video in mind this Friday when I'm getting groped by the TSA at SFO.

  • @jvolstad Ditto, Except for me it'll be at Eugene Airport on the 18th! DX

  • A new discovery, no sense of movement or vibration (until the plane falls out of the sky)

  • im not being funny but who would go do their make up and hair in the middle of a airplane flight ?

  • @59AJ59 what if you was sleeping and you just woke and look like shit? you have family that hasn't seen you in 5 years meeting you at the airport. Do you really want to lok like shit in front of them?

  • @swissa100 true LOL

  • food served on china??? what the heck happened over the years, now its just plastic trays... if you're even lucky to get fed at all!

  • @defenderoFreedom What happened was lawsuits when turbulence hit those "motionless" jets, and china, metal cutlery and glass went airborne inside the cabins.

  • @Valizan

    Oooh, Okay. Too bad

  • Classic!

  • If you wanna experience this again, just buy a 1st class ticket for any big airline . you might think it's expensive, but do you know how much it cost to take the plane back in 1958 ? ... (but yeah, I must comfess, the low cost companies have now fully eradicated the glamour of the 60-70's)

  • The real jet set way of life.....

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! A WHOLE HAM!!!!!

    White linen - REAL silverware!!!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  • back when airplane food was awesome

1959: barbequed steak with shrimp fresh.

2010: pretzels coke and artifical shit

  • Today they strip search you three times make you fill in pointless forms, fingerprint and mugshot your ass. Flying is fucked.

  • I would have loved to fly in this era! :D

  • You want comfort flying coast to coast ??-buy a 1st class (w/sleeper seats) or business class ticket on a 3-class plane. United and American etc. offer premium transcon flights between LAX/SFO and JFK. Flights were all first class in those early jet days and priced just like 1st class is today. Economy class came along 10-15 years later and really cheap flights even later.

  • It would be nice if flying was this way today. But, when you deregulate and industry...the lowest common denominator is the word. The previous standard now costs too much. Remember, a Chicago to LA ticket was $600 some bucks in '60's dollars. It was expensive to fly. The one nice thing is that, up until the ressession, flying was a whole lot cheaper and many people could experence it...even if it has taken on the vibe of a bus ride.

  • air travel sucks so bad that in a few years it will make the Auschwitz death camp look like a 5 star hotel (comparing to airlines at least)

  • Smoking on the plane LOL... If you that now you are an terriorist?
