This song is most definitely funky bop, not hard bop (in the description). Hard bop was much more aggressive (think "Giant Steps" - Coltrane, or "Mayreh" - Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers). Hard bop is also typically a lot quicker in tempo and had complex melodies and harmonic progressions. While Horace Silver did play/compose hard bop (on piano in "Mayreh"), this isn't really a good example of it, This is much simpler, with the Latin-style straight 8ths, and the blues/gospel improv. :D
Horace Silver is an attitude, of what is use to be, It's a photo of what was use to be but what a band can be now, a band that can move in front of a public. Play some Horace Silver with a band of young musiciens in front of an audience and they will be proud of the sound they can produce. To them it's not Silver it's gold.
Love this so much. So few songs dedicated to our Fathers! Lots for our Mommas...there is one version with vocals by Andy Bey that is just fabulous. I am looking for that one now to send to a friend for Fathers Day. Bless our dear Fathers!
@StrawberryFairyShoes If you listen to some of the harmonies they don't fit with Bossa style music. The bass and drums may sound like Bossa, but I assure you it is in a latin tinge style
@StrawberryFairyShoes My combo played this at the Minnesota State Solo/Ensemble competition, and when asked what style the song was, we answered collectively and said Bossa Nova. And we lost two points because the judge said and I quote "No. This style of music is not a Bossa, even though the bass and drums have a Bossa Nova feel. The harmonies in the horns are what tell you that this is in fact in the style of Latin Tinge. Giving us a 38/40 points because we answered wrong. That's how I know.
@jlbohrer Well then he was wrong this song is a bossa nova. Look don't take my word for it, look it up or ask an expert (Except maybe that judge.). Some people may say its debatable and yes although its an unusual bossa it still is bossa.
@StrawberryFairyShoes The man that told us that it was Latin Tinge instead of Bossa has a doctorate in music theory and composition. I think he would know what style this song is in.
@jlbohrer The feel of the song is bossa nova the horns do not change the feel. Your judge is mistaken. As I already said don't take my word for it, look it up. Enjoy the song.
The song makes me think of listening to my fathers playing his jazz records. The album cover looks like my grandfather - from the hat to the attitude. I will be playing this on fathers day. Thanks for posting this.

@schmanarchy As written in the description the tune is a bossa nova. The album however is a hard bop album. Thank you for listening.

My sax teacher wants me to play the Joe Henderson solo on this song. I don't know what he expects out of my considering I'm only in 8th grade.

@jlbohrer I agree with Strawberry. This song is undoubtedly a bossa nova.

This song wasn't a bossa nova, it was latin tinge. Thank you very much for uploading this recording though! It's great.

@jlbohrer This version, which is its first and thus "original" rendition, is a AAB bossa nova in F minor.

@jlbohrer It's bossa nova, it may not be a standard bossa nova but still a bossa nova.
